Video: The 1st Annual Source Awards + BIG and Pac Interview

The 1st Source Awards at Madison Square Garden NYC featuring KRS, Wu Tang, Onyx, Tribe, 2Pac, Luke, Run DMC, Russell Simmons, Doug E Fresh & others. I didn't actually have the opportunity to attend this event, I guess I took that for granted now that I look back today, since there was a great deal of hip hop coming out then to satisfy my ears. Nowadays I'd jump at the chance to see these groups live.

Check out footage of an emerging Wu Tang Clan with little Shyheim tagging along, Run DMC performing Sucka MCs, 2Pac running across stage with Q-Tip watching in the crowded stage background, and Onyx in bald-head, rebel mode doing their classic anthem, Throw Ya Gunz.

To me, this award show was one of a few signs I had that hip hop was about to enter a higher level of popularity in media, most of the groups you see in this video went on to sell a large amount of records, shape the music and they way the industry operated for years to come. This group of honorees is an example of dedication to the history of hip hop, competitive skill level, originality through self expression in the artform. I would like to see more artists in a group like this who have a strong dedication towards the music they create and message they give to people, while carrying on tradition properly through media.

Here is some bonus material from the show, an interview with 2Pac and Biggie who were both participants in the ceremony, it's a good look at an early part of both their careers before super stardom.
