I was feeling a dark, Hip Hop vibe this Friday, here's what I've got:
Raje - Dead Or Alive (produced by Hi-Tek) 2008. A recent standout production by Hi-Tek of the more underground acts he has worked with. I like the energy of this song, it seems like a good balance between Raje's persona and the intense sound of Hi-Tek.
Infamous Mobb - Blaau! (produced by Havoc) 2007. Sick piano sounds and energetic delivery on this song from their 2nd LP, "Reality Rap".
Sunburst - Mysterious Vibes 1981. This is a darker, Latin influenced cover of The Blackbyrds' 1977 classic. It's interesting to hear "Mysterious Vibes" interpolated towards a total opposite mood of darkness than the original which is more like a burst of sunshine on a bright, summer day.
Panacea - Flashback To Stardom (DJ Spinna Remix) 2007. This one is dark, but more in the sense of jazz/soul fusion combined with Hip Hop, some of DJ Spinna's production tends to have that unique edge to it. The sound gives me images of night time whenever I listen.
Oh No - Stomp That (Baptman Remix) 2007. I'm still impressed by how Bapt transformed Oh No's original to this dark and threatening sound, using elements of Herbie Hancock's Death Wish soundtrack and a touch of 70's Lonnie Liston Smith. The bassline and drum groove on this remix is addictive.
DJ Clark Kent 1995 Memorial Day Mix. This is a set from Hot 97 I ripped from cassette, Clark is playing new Hip Hop of that time plus original samples.
Ol' Dirty Bastard Meets Angie Martinez (mp3). Audio by request from my previous post of a YouTube clip.
