Wu Tang Clan: The Power Of Independence (Video Interview)

There have been examples of ambitious independent moves in Hip Hop history, but none are as memorable to me as Wu Tang Clan's industry breakthrough. The circulation of their self-distributed debut single and videos "Protect Ya Neck" and "Method Man" took on a life of it's own in 1993, gaining momentum with time as true Hip Hop fans took notice of the crew's potential despite their limited resources. I always look at this part of their career as a very inspirational one, it shows you how to use whatever resources you have at your disposal to build upon a legacy of your own.

Almost the whole crew is here, explaining how they carved their own path to break into the industry. They weren't quite at their peak of success yet at this point, but seem proud to have made it to a level where they are now calling their own shots, which is good. The Clan are good at leaving valuable life lessons based on trail and error, good faith and experience.

I sure wouldn't have wanted to be the record exec who failed to sign these guys in their early career..
