Collectors Item - Music, Art and Life: April 2013
P-Money, M.O.P. and Sergio Cortes Herrera Are "Cold As Ice"

Painful memories and emotion from dealing with the trials of love are the root of this 2013 cover of a classic Foreigner tune by guitarist Sergio Cortes Herrera. "Cold As Ice" showcases the skill of Sergio who lends powerful emotion toward an authentic arrangement of the song against the original 1977 vocal performance of Lou Gramm. This song is most well known for it's use in Hip Hop by Brownsville duo M.O.P., who are responsible for a new appreciation of Rock within urban street culture.

This cover features a heightened degree of presence on the guitar which gives the sense that Sergio is pouring out his emotion based upon the influence and raw emotion of this tune. The performance and arrangement is killer throughout, including a wicked guitar solo to lead the song's conclusion which is not heard in the original version by Foreigner.

Whether you appreciate the sound of "Cold As Ice" from a Rock performance or M.O.P'.s Hip Hop perspective, both homages are a cool to witness as one generation of music and culture pays respect to the former.

Still "the hardest muthafuckas Hip Hop ever came across", Billy Danze & Fame join forces with P-Money for "The Hardest". With drums that knock underneath a soulful sample selection, this trio are cold as ice and demonstrate the meaning of "hood rich" on a banger taken from the forthcoming P-Money album 'Gratitude'. Available as a free download.

P-Money "Gratitude" Album drops worldwide May 21st (May 17 NZ + Australia)

Supastition Announces Collaborative Projects w/ Stoupe & Rik Marvel

By JR on 12:56 PM

"Supastition and Stoupe (formerly of Jedi Mind Tricks) have joined forces to create the music collective, VESTIGE, which will focus solely on releasing concept albums based around one common theme. The first project will be entitled 'The Inanimate Life' which documents the fictional life story of a man born to an unfit mother and how his life spirals out of control due to her actions, as well as his own mistakes. The story and lyrics were written by Supastition with Stoupe and his production team (Bad Tape) handling the music which meshes together hip hop, downtempo, and live instrumentation.

VESTIGE combines the renowned storytelling abilities of Supastition matched with the cinematic feel of Stoupe’s production. The MC/producer duo have been crafting the concept album for the past year while agreeing not to publicly discuss it until its completion. Vestige: a trace of something that is disappearing or no longer exists.

Supastition is also in the studio working on an upcoming EP with German-based producer, Rik Marvel. 'The Guilt Trip EP' continues Supastition’s return to vintage sounding hip-hop with Rik Marvel handling all of the production duties. The EP will be released via Supastition's Bandcamp tentatively scheduled for July 2013."

Diggin' James Brown: His 7" Collection Mixed By DJ Muro (Snippets)

By JR on 8:12 AM

 Review by DustyGroove:

"DJ Muro's digging James Brown – and we're digging the massive way he mixes together the music! The set's way more than another James Brown compilation – and instead, it feels more like a love letter to The Godfather – served up in music made by James himself, and some of his key sidemen too – all mixed together by Muro in these short blasts of funk and soul that bristle with energy throughout!

The whole thing's got way more care than the usual mixtape – as Muro's been training his ears on JB nuggets for years, so knows just the right makes to cut and make a change – managing to get through bits of 43 tracks in just the course of 73 minutes.

Includes work from "The Boss", "Down & Out In New York City", "Baby Here I Come", "Blues & Pants", "Nose Job", "A Talk With The News", "Funky Drummer", "Hot Pants Road", "Can Mind", "I Got Ants In My Pants", "The Drunk", "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose", and "Funky President"."

Some rare Soul music for your Record Store Day 2013, master tape recordings of American Funk band 24 Carat Black excavated by Numero Group! "24-Carat Black: Gone: The Promises of Yesterday" was originally released in 2009 but Numero has re-created 549 pressings as a 10" picture disc to simulate the look of damaged vinyl as shown below. Here's what the label has to say about this great re-issue:

"When we first got the tapes for what would become NUM025 24-Carat Black: Gone: The Promises of Yesterday LP/CD, we thought we had a lot more material from which to compile from. From the four tapes that we transferred, only six usable tracks managed to make it off the reel. The rest were in such bad shape that we got one pass at capturing what was left. And even then, there were only four songs that were audible. But what great songs they are! Listen:"

UK Jazz Musician Finn Peters Channels Nas's "New York State of Mind" On "Gato"

This fast-paced Latin Jazz tune by Finn Peters flows with a free and uplifting vibe, a very strong contrast to the dark Hip Hop and Jazz songs which inspired it's creation. Enjoy the breezy rhythm and vibe of Finn Peters on "Gato" who deliberately composed with three different artists in mind. This Latin tune is named after the great Argentine tenor player Gato Barbieri and borrows the classic piano line from Nas’s “N.Y. State of Mind” which was sampled from Joe Chambers' “Mind Rain”.

The rest of Finn's 2006 LP entitled "Su-Linn" is a great listen of heavenly Jazz sound. Check out "Gato" along with the rest of "Su-Linn" below.

Lend your ear to these two emerging MCs as they pay tribute to the legendary Hip Hop duo of Gangstarr. J Spine borrows the beat from "Discipline" to address the fake and phony while Satisfack Shun flows over "DWYCK" in a witty rhyme style and persona reminiscent of a Stretch & Bobbito rhyme session from the early 90's.

Be sure to check out more of their music at Soundcloud if you like what you've heard here.

Charles Bradley - "Victim of Love" (Album Stream Courtesy Of Daptone)

By JR on 11:22 AM

Review by Dusty Groove:

"Damn amazing work from Charles Bradley – an instant soul classic for all generations, as you'll hear from the very first note! Not only are Bradley's vocals incredible – the kind of once-in-a-long-time approach he brought to his debut – but the backings and production are completely sublime too – magical music from the Menahan Street Band, who sound here like some lost combo from 60s Memphis, but without any of the hoke that reference might imply – instead that really unique approach that you'd only find on one of your few favorite vintage soul albums – maybe Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers, or Jesse James on his 60s album for 20th Century! Yet the sound here isn't just vintage for vintage sake, either – as there's an intensity that's very present, contemporary, and urgent – a sound that doesn't die – and which just gets better and better with each new listen.

Tremendous stuff – even from the Daptone universe we've been loving for years and years – with titles that include "Strictly Reserved For You", "You Put The Flame On It", "Dusty Blue", "Love Bug Blues", "Hurricane", "Through The Storm", "Confusion", and "Where Do We Go From Here". (Includes free download.)"

"The Runk" by Otis Grove

By JR on 2:15 PM

If you enjoy the energy and rush of Rock as equally as grooving to elements of Funk such as the Hammond organ, Otis Grove is sure to provide an ear-opening experience upon the first listen of their experimental album "The Runk". Applying harder-edged characteristics than you may be used to hearing in Hammond grooves, Otis Grove embrace heavy Rock sounds along with a Jazz-Funk approach in their own musical style called "The Runk" which can be heard prominently in songs "Monark", "Rock City" and "Plywood Snowshoe". Enjoy the album below and check out words from Otis as they explain their musical approach below.

"The idea for The Runk went beyond just the collection of songs that Otis Grove had for the album. The band's sound had started taking on harder edge characteristics that can be heard on some of the earlier cuts off of their first album for Ropeadope, Crank it UP. The Runk took those ideas and expanded them further, fully embracing heavy rock grooves and sounds that can be heard prominently in songs "Monark", "Rock City" and "Plywood Snowshoe". The Runk (which is a mixture of Rock-Funk) was what they started calling this new sound that they were developing. While recording the record Otis Grove used the studio to their full advantage, over-dubbing multiple guitar parts with many different amps to get the right tone, as well using Guitarists Tyler Drabick's custom made "Super Organ and Leslie" a high-powered Organ and Leslie speaker system that they use to get the fuzzy almost synth like bass that you can hear in the solo section to "Rock City".

Other songs on The Runk, veer towards more of the funk edge side of things, such as "The Bunk" "Basket Case" and "I Won't Forget", while still having a gritty rock edge to them. The concept of the record was not only to capture the song's that are truly "RUNK" but those that set-up the building blocks for them to create the sound. This explains the title to "Uncle Runky" a slow r&b type jam, which is pure funk, and is truly the Uncle to the Runk, cause without that feel the Runk would not be what it is. The closing song "Fausto" really embodies Runk music, starting out with a heavy guitar riff and soaring distorted organ chorus, it then mellows out into a nice funk groove and guitar solo, only to return once again to the heavy riff for the ending. It is a great example of what Otis Grove feels is their own musical style that they call "The Runk"."
