Sample Of The Day: Stark Reality vs. Cocaine 80's

Chi-Town producer No I.D. borrows a loop from Stark Reality's "Comrades" to craft a mellow mood of production to match Common's visions of back in the day. In listening to the original sample it's easier to appreciate the production aspect of "Six", as the Cocaine 80's collective combine their individual talents of rhyming, singing and beats to expand upon the unique sound of Stark Reality.

Cocaine 80’s is a group consisting of No I.D, Common, James Fauntleroy, Kevin Randolph, Rob Kineiski and Steve Wyreman.

The sounds of Stark Reality continue to amaze me since discovering their psychedelic fuzz sound years ago. Other artists who have gone on to sample their music include Skyzoo, Madlib, J-Live and Large Professor.

Here is short excerpt about Stark Reality and their album "Now" by Wax Poetics

"Now is an amazing anthology harnessing the fuzz-fusion of Boston quartet, Stark Reality. Fronted by vibraphonist Monty Stark, this extremely rare recording contains unique renditions of songs originally recorded by Hoagie Carmichael. Carmichael, born in 1899, penned such timeless classics as “Georgia on my Mind” and “Stardust.” Although originally recorded by Carmichael for a children’s record entitled, Havin’ a Party, it was Stark Reality who really tapped the keg of intrinsic party value tucked away in these songs. The record is heavy, psychedelic, and perfectly distorted- a Hancock meets Hendrix voyage through time and sound."
