"An inviting set of UK soul from Tyrone Lee! It's a nice mix of uptempo and mid tempo groovers with a modern sound, though it skirts contemporary trends, giving it a vibe that'll stand the test of time. Tyrone has a naturally soulful and confident presence – with the poise of a veteran – even if this is the first we've heard from him. Nice stuff from Expansion UK! Titles include "Time Of Your Life", "What Took You So Long", "Hot2Nite", "Get 2 Know U", "Invitation", "Get My Life Back", "Listening To Your Heart", "Overload", "Turn Up The Heat", "Woman In My World" and more." - Review by Dusty Groove

"Here is a Holiday "HIP HOP" treat for all of the real heads out there. This is pt 1 of two versions of a song I did for the group Foul Play that was on DuckDown Records ft Ruc & Rock of Heltah Skeltah back in late 1995...
Recorded in D&D Studio NYC... This version was released last year on some indi project, and also a Dj Doo Wop freestyle version. Luckily I still have another version that we recorded in the studio.
This version has Roc dropping the hook, and on a new project I'm getting together for 2014 I'll release part 2 with other verses from both Ruc & Rock... It's great to always have some heat in the stash, and I have a lot.

Let the breezy Latin Funk of the AFLEX Combo uplift your spirit as this upbeat guitar-driven groove touched by vibraphone and female background vocals sets a mellow vibe. If you love Funk fusion for a feeling of festivity, "Hibaros" provides a nice balance between edgy and carefree sounds as sounds which project a lighter touch blend with aggressive rhythm in percussion.
This soulful and slept-on gem from 2002 captures a vibe of love in the style of great 80's R&B songwriting such as the classic slow jam "Love Changes" by Kashif and Melba Moore. "Holiday Love" balances great vocals with synth-based production for a throwback style of music which communicates the language of love through music with powerful emotion.
Dig the styles comin' from Plug One, Plug Two and Plug 3 in this 1993 live performance of "Breakadawn". De La bring together the elements of a classic as they command the crowd with their thoughtful lyrics and intellect to the thump of a mellow and thumping groove. This is one song which strikes a fine balance between captivating both your imagination and urge to dance through deeply written lyrics which are laid upon the foundation of funky music.
“The winter holiday is season has always been special to me, the time makes me think of family and giving. It brings memories of singing Christmas songs at an early age, and now I sing them with my own children,” explains Chris. “I was born on Christmas, and I always used to crave the gifts galore. Now as a father….I just crave the love and joy of togetherness and the season. And what better way to get love, then to give love. So this is a remake of one of my musical idols, Donny Hathaway, and it is from my heart to you. I hope you enjoy and appreciate the spirit of the season and share it with others. Let’s spread the holiday love and good will to all.” - Chris Turner

The Expansions Bring A New Dimension To Jazz-Funk On "The Lavender EP"
By JR on 4:51 PM
Filed Under: Album Streams , Covers , Dave Matthews , Drum Breaks , Jazz/Funk Fusion , The Expansions (British Jazz Funk)
The Expansions are a Jazz Funk quartet hailing from South London. Influenced by the street sounds of the 70's and Blaxploitation, The Expansions bring a new dimension to a classic sound.
Words on The Lavender EP by The Expansions:
"Lavender - This was released earlier this year, and we were so overwhelmed with the response it got, we decided to bring it back and give it a full release... "kick back, relax and soak up the sunshine in audio form!" - Rob Coley (The Jazz Meet)
It is joined by three other tracks:
Sandworms - Originally recorded in 1977 by David Matthews for the album 'Dune' on CTI records. Many of you may know it in its sampled form, having been used by Large Professor and Method Man/Redman and Pete Rock amongst many others. It's a classic and we wanted to have a go at it!
Lemon Squash - This Blaxploitation inspired funk tune was conceived in just 1 evening. We were in a different rehearsal space for the night and it kinda just happened. We think it's pretty funky!
Tokyo - This is one of our favourites, even though Dave doesn't really like it...! It's a bit Latin, it's a bit Funk, and it has a lovely drum break in the middle. Standard. "
The Expansions are:
James O'Keefe - Guitar
Dave Koor - Keys and Synths
Jonny Drop - Drums
Matt Summerfield - Bass

Klaus Layer (previously known as Captain Crook) was always interested in eastern German art and music, but it was the fall of the Berlin Wall that truly opened up new opportunities for him to explore a wider range of art and foreign cultures. Klaus was born in Oranienburg, Germany, and while his preference for 90's hip-hop music and the influence of a local graffiti scene can be seen and heard in his work, he has his own distinct identity as a creator. Klaus cites artists like Michael Hamel, Günther Fischer, Can, Pete Rock, Damu the Fudgemunk and Lord Finesse as sources of inspiration, just as much as he does the Surrealist style of art as well as the audio & visuals found in old movies from the 50s-70s. All of Layer's artistic influences, along with some non-traditional sampling resources have creatively been morphed together via his instrument of choice, a sampler, into a unique style of instrumental music full of rich layers, including all sorts of percussive and melodic patterns. If you know what Redef stands for and the status of the artists on our roster, than you already know what to expect from klaus: Quality.

Listen to the powerful words of an MC who rebounds back from the struggle of not having a father in his life on "Let It Cause Pain". Mr. Fickle relieves his pain in song over the dark and cinematic sound of YFame by reflecting on the mistakes of his dad in order to become a better person. A good example of music as food for thought and a resource of healing from "The HipHop Nerd" avail now streaming at www.mrfickle.bandcamp.com
Words by Mr. Fickle:
It is important to stress that the absence of any parent places a void and a hole in a child's life forever. Fathers should make a point to play essential figures in their son's lives, young men without the supportive guidance of a father often fall into the vicious jaws of crime, more so the pattern of absentee father would most likely continue generation after generation.

"What a decade 1970-1980 was for French music! Cosmic Machine: A Voyage Across French Cosmic & Electronic Avantgarde 1970-1980 features well-known Gaelic cosmic pioneers such as Serge Gainsbourg and Jean Michel Jarre and slightly less prolific space cadets such as The Atomic Crocus and Quartz. Cosmic Voyage is an immaculate document that celebrates and applauds some of the most influential music to have emerged in Europe during the 70s.
Listen to tracks such as Space's "Magic Fly" or Pierre Bachelet's "Motel Show" and you'll hear three decades of disco and synth music that followed. Immaculately compiled and presented, this is one history lesson everyone would benefit from digesting. Bon Voyage!"
Groove to the feel-good Nu Jazz of Calvin "Dr. Cal" Hogue as he provides a musical vision of happiness in the driving Jazz-Funk sound known as "Garden Of Love". The passion which he display in a performance on the guitar steals the show and sets the foundation for 6 minutes of entertainment in a tune which provides an uplifting vibe of energy as a deeply inspired musician aims to inspire your mind and soul.
Words by Dr. Cal:
I shared this tune during the summer but it was time to bring it back. I wish I could invite the world to a place of peace and love. i am so weary of all the negative news and all the hate and unnecessary fighting. The "Garden Of Love" is that place where I go in the music and the melodies of my spirit. Come with me for a few moments and close you eyes and let the Garden of Love take over.........All we need is LOVE...DrCal

In the year of '93, MTV takes an inside look at the fashion element of Hip Hop culture where clothes and how they were worn reflected the street persona of the people. Featured designers are Russell Simmon's Phat Farm line, Naughty by Nature's Naughty Gear, Stussy and others who were apart of the growing Hip Hop fashion industry of the early 90's.
As one of the most vivid and thought-provoking songs to hit the nail on the head when it comes to representing various elements of Hip Hop fashion, The Wu-Tang Clan perform "Garment Renaissance" live on MTV for the "High School High" soundtrack.
This 2 hour installment of Suga In My Bowl radio featured an interview with pianist, composer, arranger and producer Bob James. This interview originally aired in June 2006 as part of WBAI’s Hip Hop Takeover. They discussed James’ career and his relationship to Hip Hop as one of the most sampled artists and songwriters of the classic break beat "Take Me To The Mardi Gras".
Enjoy a set of cover tributes by a collective of emerging musicians who lend their own flavor to the music of Bob James, including a Rock-influenced version of "Nautilus" and an original tune by Dr Cal driven by funky guitar playing .
Dirt Song is a teaser from The Putbacks, recorded from the same session where this upcoming 7" was put down. The record will be The Putbacks featuring Nai Palm on the A with a slamming instrumental on the B! The original spacey jazz funk sound of the Brighter Days album by Stanton Davis’ Ghetto Mysticism band has been championed by everyone from Gilles Peterson to Andrew Mason of Wax Poetics to hip hop producer and rapper Madlib. Isis Voyage is a collection of unreleased music and alternative mixes from the Brighter Days sessions.
Many of the tracks on Brighter Days were shortened to be more accessible to the listening public. Isis Voyage contains the original, longer versions of many of these songs including “High Jazz” and “High Jazz Reprise.”
Back in October 2012 Stanton Davis and Cultures of Soul Records’ label head, Deano Sounds, went into the studio to mix down tracks from the original multi-track reel to reel tapes. Two unreleased tracks, “Odwalla” and the title track “Isis Voyage,” were among the material discovered while mixing down the music.
Also included are extended instrumental versions of “Things Can Not Stop Forever” and “Funky Fried Tofu.” Bonus tracks include remixes of “Things Can Not Stop Forever” and “High Jazz” by UK disco remix expert Al Kent.
Coming out on January 21st on 2LP and CD you can pre-order it here.

Willis Hickerson Jr is smooth Jazz personified in his blissful arrangement of the classic "Lovely Day". Experience a delightful moment in time as Will reimagines the spice of life contained in the timeless songwriting of Bill Withers. Happiness is just a button press away as this soul searching musician digs deep within to bring you joy. From his 2013 album "Soul Searching".
Producer Moods carries the legacy of Dilla forward with a futuristic thump of Hip Hop sound on the remix of "Game Over". As one of many emerging new school producers who are inspired after Jay to create an expansive sound of beats, Moods sets the tone for this duo to kick braggadocio rhymes over a melodic composition of layered synths and thumping drum groove. Witness a new generation of producer who plays to win in homaging Dilla to prove "Detroit makes the world go 'round".
Thanks to Yancey Media Group, legendary Detroit producer J. Dilla‘s Dillatroit, a project in which the fallen hip hop hero’s music clashes with another Motown music titan, house producer Moodymann, has received an official digital release.
The project originally was released on vinyl-only in 2012, but now Dillatroit is available to the masses, including two bonus tracks from J. Dilla’s #LostScrolls project.
Dillatroit is available for free stream and direct purchase. All files are high quality MP3s (320 kbps).

Counting The Ways is the debut album from Teotima, a 14 piece spiritual jazz ensemble from London. Guitarist-composer Greg Sanders started Teotima; taking powerful, elegant but deceptively complex grooves of West Africa, Cuba and Brazil and adding the sensibility of classic American soul and funk he brought together a loose collective of musicians in 2011 to workshop ideas.
As an intrinsically live project, all the individual band members were key to the project and their improvisation is a central part of the album. Recorded as-live at London's Fishmarket Studios under the watchful eye of engineer Ben 'Nostalgia 77' Lamdin, the record achieves a synchronicity that only this kind of old-fashioned approach can produce.
One of the most striking things about the record is the huge scope that it encompasses - the arrangements of Gil Evans and David Axelrod, grooves reminiscent of Arthur Verocai and the Fania All Stars and the textures of more modern groups such as The Floating Points Ensemble and Snarky Puppy.
All of these truly organic facets combine to create a striking 43-minute long debut album from Greg Sanders and his Teotima Ensemble.
You can order your copy on CD, vinyl or download from teotimaensemble.bandcamp.com
