Stream "Love.Life.Live" by D'Angelo Collaborator Isaiah Sharkey

"A native Chicagoan, 28-year-old Isaiah Sharkey spent his early years living in Cabrini Green. Perhaps as a precursor to his future career, he lived with his parents in a row house on a street that is now named for Curtis Mayfield.

Coming from a musical household, Isaiah was introduced to music at the age of four, he decided he wanted to be a guitarist and asked his parents to purchase one. Shortly thereafter, Isaiah started learning music under the close introduction of his father, Michael Sharkey. He would learn about different musical genres/styles from gospel music -- which came from growing up in the church -- to jazz, R&B, blues, rock and funk music. It wasn't long after that Isaiah would become noticed by other musicians in the Chicago area for being a young new talent. Soon after, he started doing concerts in the church as well as sitting in local jazz club jams.

At the age of 14, Isaiah, along with his father and brothers, released their first album entitled, "Skyliner." This album displayed Isaiah's ability to play covers and some transcriptions from greats like Wes Montgomery and George Benson.

Shortly thereafter, he started his recording career and served as a sideman for gospel artists such as Smokie Norful, Donald Lawrence and Vanessa Bell Armstrong. He also toured as lead guitarist with Ronald Isley and recorded two albums with him."

"In 2009, Isaiah started working with artist D'Angelo on his third album, Black Messiah, which won the 2015 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. Based on his work and contribution to the project, Isaiah received his first Grammy.

Currently, Isaiah can be found on tour with 7 time Grammy Award winner John Mayer’s “The Search for Everything World Tour.”

Isaiah also has worked, recorded, and toured with several world-renown and Grammy award winning artists including, Patti Labelle, Christopher Martin of Coldplay, Paul Simon, Corrine Bailey Rae, Mike Posner, Keith Urban, Brian McKnight, Boyz Il Men, Lalah Hathaway, Raphael Saadiq, Jennifer Hudson, Chris Dave and the DrumHedz, Regina Bell, Ruben Studdard, Lupe Fiasco, Kelly Price, Faith Evans, Rance Allen, The Winans, The Clark Sisters and many others.

Isaiah Sharkey is poised to take center stage as he fuses together his background in rock, gospel, jazz, R&B, blues, and funk to create an original sound with an unmistakable dose of soul. His first digital offering is his distinctive rendition of Cream’s classic “Sunshine of Your Love.” The second offering Isaiah wrote, “Sandy” is also now available digitally worldwide."

The Supremes' Susaye Greene Talks Making Music With Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder & Michael Jackson

By JR on 4:30 PM

"When I was growing up, I listened to Rachmaninoff and I listened to Motown. It’s not as strange a pairing as it might seem. The music that came from both was incredible, and in the case of the latter, Motown was not just the sound of “young America”, but the beating rhythm behind the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. How relevant that is today still. In the mix was Susaye Greene, a longtime collaborator of musical greats from Ray Charles to Stevie Wonder. "

"To the wider public, she is perhaps best-known as being the last member of The Supremes, the girl group originally led by Diana Ross that racked up 12 #1 hits. But Susaye is as much a creator as she is a performer. She wrote ‘I Can’t Help It’, the incredible track sung by Michael Jackson on his ‘Off the Wall’ album, as well as ‘Free’, hit single for Deniece Williams. I sat down with Susaye at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles, and we had a fantastic time recording this podcast. If you love music, and the way it connects to social history, then listen to our conversation. I think you’ll love it." - C H A O

Hear Unreleased 70's Funk & Soul Gems On "Welcome to the Newsroom" Comp

By JR on 6:55 PM

"The title for this new compilation of old grooves from 7 Bridges Recordings couldn't be more fitting for our times. Though recorded almost 30 years ago, the title track "Newsroom" is still sadly up to date in today's world. Apart from the socially conscious and deeply urban message of many of the tracks, Welcome to the Newsroom is a fine collection of unreleased true funk gems from the early 1970's.

The line up on these recordings includes early contributions of Sheila E., drummer and songwriter Paul Tillman Smith, Cal Tjader's keyboard player extra-ordinaire Lonnie Hewitt and Guitarist Ray Obiedo, who in the mid 70's went on to record with Herbie Hancock. From rough James Brown-like garage funk to relaxed Latin Jazz grooves, this compilation is a reflection of the musical wealth of the San Francisco Bay Area's busy funk and soul scene of the 1970s. Filled with tasty break beats, this record will easily become a classic for DJ's and funk fans alike." - 7 Bridges Recordings

Enjoy the Funk and check out more from the 7 Bridges catalog here at Amazon.

The Loving 80's Soul Music Of Pure Pleasure, Reissued To 7" & Digital

By JR on 12:51 PM

"Our Soul7 label is back with bang with a double sided treasure from the early '80s by a little known Detroit band called Pure Pleasure.

DJs and dancers alike will love this full-sounding remastered 7 repress!

It's hard to decide which of the two sides is better, the outstanding, uplifting By My Side is considered 'the track' - but don't dismiss the flip! Co-written and sung by Barbara Love, 'By My Side' is a super charged mid-tempo vocal dancefloor fave that's a blinder from the start with driven, tight horn and bass stabs swinging into a stunning two step soul track with the perfect beat. It;'s as wonderful on first hearing today as it was back in 1981. 'I remember heading down to Indianapolis to cut this record. We had a lot of fun' Barbara told us recently, 'I don't know why we went all the way down there, it was all over in a day'.

On the flip Dancin & Prancin, a true dancer from the off, disco jazz funk bass groove and a top class vocal from Tony D. Perfect sounding for today's modern soul clubs - it even includes a nice b-boy disco drum break!

The band members all went to the same school in Detroit back in the late '60s. Upon leaving school the boys started a band called The Soulful Sonics in the early '70s. Barbara used to gig with them on occasion but nothing was ever recorded. The band changed their name to Pure Pleasure in the mid '70s and in 1979 they asked Barbara to join. Around June 1980 'By My Side' had been written and the group were finally readly to release a 45 on their own label. QC Records was born - it stood for Quick Cash!

Unfortunately, like many bands after their first release, tensions arose which caused a breakup. In this case it was disruption within the band due to Barbara getting the lion's share of credit and attention. But years late Pure Pleasure is back together doing gigs and rockin' the crowds, and this 45 lets the music live on." - Kudos Records

Ryan Porter, Kamasi Washington & Others Revamp Classic Children's Songs On "Spangle-Lang Lane"

By JR on 2:44 PM

"Running in parallel with the powerful wave of transformation that occurred with the advent of recording technology in the 1800s, children’s music has been a critically important part of the evolving pace of modern culture. Through the entire body of children’s music, few have truly deviated from the normal harmonic and melodic structures of past composers. This is about to change in the fall of 2017 as West Coast Get Down co-founder Ryan Porter will present Spangle-Lang Lane, a collection of music that revamps and puts a facelift on some of the world’s most beloved children’s songs. Serving as his debut album, Ryan Porter will release Spangle-Lang Lane September 22, 2017. The eight track LP will land with the quickly rising Los Angeles based jazz imprint World Galaxy on LP, CD, and digital formats.

As another chapter in the ongoing saga of releases cultivated from the legendary KSL Sessions, Spangle-Lang Lane was committed to archives in December of 2011. This was during the same window as recordings for Kamasi Washington’s The Epic (Brainfeeder), Ronald Bruner Jr.’s Triumph (World Galaxy), and Miles Mosley’s Uprising (World Galaxy). Men, women, and children of all ages can enjoy newly revised versions of the “ABC Song,” “Itsy Bitsy Spider,” “Little Boy Blue,” “Rain Rain Go Away,” “Ants Go Marching One By One,” “Row Row Row Your Boat,” “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” and Ryan Porter’s very own LP theme." - World Galaxy Records

Features and collaborations across Spangle-Lang Lane include renowned LA based musicians Kamasi Washington (alto sax, percussion), Ronald Bruner Jr. (drums), Adam Turchin (tenor sax), Miles Mosley (bass, percussion), Cameron Graves (piano, vocals), Taylor Graves (vocals), Brandon Coleman (organ, fender rhodes, vocoder, strings), Tony Austin (drums, engineering), Patrice Quinn (vocals), Chris Gray (trumpet), James Ford (trumpet), Justin Sky (vocals), Robert Miller (drums, percussion), Noland Bryant (vocals), and the late and great Zane Musa (alto sax).

DJ LS One Shares The Story Behind "Purse Snatchaz Pt. 2" by Onyx

By JR on 7:50 PM

► The history of recording... "Purse Snatchers Remix": Method Man could have been on this song! • DJ LS One (DJ for the platinum-selling group ONYX, currently signed to Def Jam Recordings): Onyx did songs with Smoothe and Trigger, and with Method Man. I've known Smooth and Trigger since before they came into the rhyming life, and we've always been cool. Trigger and Khrist were signed to Def Jam, and Onyx is signed to Def Jam. So we decided, "OK, y'all do the song with us and in return we'll do a remix with y'all, so it’s like an even swap". We didn't call Violator Management and ask for Trigger. I went straight to them myself. I was like, "Yo, Trig, what's the deal? We're getting ready to do this song, we want y'all to get on the remix". He was like, "What's the song?" I told him, "Purse Snatchers". They listened to the original "Purse Snatchers" on the album and they was like, "Yeah, we was talking about that song, because that's the same type of style that me and Smoothe use". "So do y'all want to get on it?" "Of course". It took like two days. We were in the studio, we did it. Same thing with Meth. All he wanted was for us to do something with him on his new album. So that's how it went down. The second day we were doing "Purse Snatchers", Meth was in the studio, and he was mad that he wasn't on it. So him and [Onyx MC] Sticky Fingaz talked, they worked it out where we'll do a song on Meth's new album. The managers were talking behind the scenes and we were like, "We don't need all of that happening, because we took care of all of this." (© Interview with DJ LS One from "Elementary" magazine Spring, 1997) • Recorded in November / December 1995 (If you remember this day - just let me know...) • Recorded & Mixed by DJ LS One (?) at Chung King Studios, NYC (?) • Producer: Fredro Starr • Scratches: DJ LS One • Flashback with @djlsone x @fredro_starr x @iamstickyfingaz x @sonny_seeza x @destroyandbuildsociety x @smoothedahustler x @triggerthagambler x @dvaliaskhryst #ONYX #DJLSOne #PurseSnatchersPt2 #PurseSnatchers #JimmyMcGriff #AllWeGotIzUs #SmootheDaHustler #TriggerThaGambler #DVAliasKhrist #MethodMan #WuTangClan #DefJam #JMJRecords
