Saxophonist Gary Bartz Blows Magic Upon R&B/Soul Classics on "Damage Control"

There are certain musicians who have a knack for making you feel good in their own unique way. The music of Gary Bartz is like receiving a warm embrace from your elder relative, one which leaves you feeling invigorated and enriched with life. From the man who's saxophone tone left an indelible imprint on A Tribe Called Quest's "Butter" and more classics. Gary Bartz bets on himself with Damage Control, released September 26, 2025 via OYO Records. Here's what the label has to say about this outstanding project:

"The NEA Jazz Master releases his first studio album in 12 years, produced by Om’mas Keith and featuring a boundary-blurring mix of soul, pop, and Black American music tradition.

In 2023, Gary Bartz made a bet. At 83 years old, the iconic saxophonist cashed out his 401k, went on sabbatical from teaching at Oberlin Conservatory, and made a record - not for a label, but for himself. The result is Damage Control, his first studio album in a dozen years, and one of the most heartfelt projects of his career, released September 26, 2025 via his own OYO Records."

Jazz Honors The First-Born People With Nicholas Payton's The Black Is Beautiful Experience

"We’re excited to debut the release of our first studio video filmed in 2022, and single available on select streaming platforms, “Black is Beautiful”, composed by Nicholas Payton, the title track of our upcoming debut album from the Black Is Beautiful Experience collective and Rhymshot recording label. Inspired by photographer and activist Kwame Brathwaite’s iconic portrait of his wife and original Grandassa Model Sikolo Brathwaite, this piece pays tribute to the legacy and enduring influence of the Black Is Beautiful movement and the pioneering Grandassa Models, a group of women who challenged and redefined beauty standards in the 1960s by fearlessly embracing natural Black beauty.

Featuring the powerful spoken word of Sikolo Brathwaite, this piece is brought to life by the extraordinary talent of Marcus Gilmore, a phenomenal Black woman-led ensemble and Brandee Younger who appears courtesy of Impulse! Records.

In honor of Women's History Month, we pay homage to the trailblazing Black women artists who used art and fashion as tools of empowerment and expression 62 years ago and laid the groundwork for future generations to celebrate Black beauty and heritage."

"Surfacing six years after its completion in 2013, this eight track collection was recorded in 2012 under the direction of producer and bassist Dezron Douglas, and embodies the ambition, vigor and aesthetic ideals of The Brandee Younger Quartet, at and since its inception. A benchmark recording that captures the group’s collective brilliance in its infancy, Soul Awakening is a synthesis of the people, places and moments that impacted Younger most, ahead of the album’s creation. The very first album recorded by the ensemble, Soul Awakening marks the birth of Brandee Younger’s artistic signature and the reemergence of the harp as a pillar of modern popular music."
