In addition to his groundbreaking contribution to music as a great singer, keyboardist and composer who showed amazing versatility, George Duke played a strong role in symphonic Jazz. In memory of the Symphonic Jazz Orchestra's co-music director, the SJO presents the George Duke Legacy Project. Bassist extraordinaire Christian McBride who leads this special tribute shares his honor in being inspired by musical innovator George Duke and having had the opportunity to work with him in creating "Bass Concerto" for the 67-member Symphonic Jazz Orchestra. George's son Rashid Duke, composer Quincy Jones and comedian/actor Tommy Davidson also share their thoughts on the Duke musical impact.
The Duke/McBride/Symphonic Jazz Orchestra collaboration is part of a special musical tribute put together in honor of George which also includes music by Lee Ritenour and Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue". The George Duke Legacy is also on a mission to forward SJO's expanding "Music in the Schools" residency programs in underserved communities throughout Southern California and the creation of the ASCAP/George Duke Commissioning Competition.
