Collectors Item - Music, Art and Life: Madskillz
In '78, Flutist Dave Valentin Provides The Bounce For Madskillz & Hi-Tek

Whie digging through the crates recently I was pleased to discover this gem of a Jazz Fusion project. If you're a fan of the carefree and cinematic sound of Hubert Laws or Dave Grusin in the 70's, "Legends" is just as pleasant. David Peter Valentin was the first musician signed to GRP Records, a label founded by Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen. Over time he recorded with Noel Pointer, Patti Austin, Lee Ritenour, Chris Connor, David Benoit, Eliane Elias, and Nnenna Freelon.

Kick back as this flutist sends your mind on cloud 9 with the magic he brings to woodwinds. Dave Valentin's "Legends" demonstrates the timeless and distinct sound of the flute and it's range of emotion. In addition, we get the sample source for Madskillz & Hi-Tek's "Y'all Don't Wanna" on Dave's cool Latin cover of "Afro Blue".

Hear The Demo Of A Tribe Called Quest's "Buggin' Out", Plus More Hip Hop Rarities

YouTuber East LA Cervecero comes from the depths of his tape collection for an excavation of 90's Hip Hop greatness. His channel features rare promo and advance tapes of classic Hip Hop albums plus some rare material. Straight from the DAT machine, we have some snippets of the extended demo version for Tribe's "Buggin' Out". In addition, he gives us a full set of The Roots perform in '95 at UCLA and a tape recording from the '96 Gavin Conference featuring Jay-Z, ATCQ, KRS-One and Madskillz.

Hit up East LA Cervecero here at his YouTube channel to inquire about any of his tapes. Hopefully we can convince him to upload a full version of the "Buggin' Out" demo!

At my eBay Storefront (link at the sidebar of my blog) I've got the 1991 issue of Hip Hop Connection with Tribe on the cover, plus more collector's items.

Madskillz Joins Lalah Hathaway For A Dreamy Tribute To The Vinyl Experience

Fall in love with vinyl once again as Madskillz and singer Lalah Hathaway put you in a state of euphoria on "Music". This smooth tribute to the record listening experience feels like a dream as Skillz reflects on good times at home. His vivid spoken word performance describes record spinning with incredible detail alongside a soulful instrumental and vocalist. As a result, we can time travel to the wonderful senses and memories we've had in front of the record player.

Enjoy this gem from Madskillz summer 2024 album "The Seven Number Ones", and check out some of his rare instrumentals provided by Hidden Instrumentals UK.

Chino XL Blazes The Mic With Madskillz In '96, Drops Murderous Rhymes With Vinnie Paz & Stu Bangas

WHPK radio invites two talented lyricists in '96 to display their outstanding command of the rhyme. Listen as Chino XL and Madskillz go back-to-back rhyming with the fury unlike the average MC. Whether it's 1996 or 2023, these MCs use the rhyme to murder, as Chino XL demonstrates on his collaboration with Stu Bangas and Vinnie Paz. This chilling track sets the tone for each MC to become dangerous as Stu's piano-driven instrumental introduces horrific sounds to Hip Hop.
