"We’re excited to debut the release of our first studio video filmed in 2022, and single available on select streaming platforms, “Black is Beautiful”, composed by Nicholas Payton, the title track of our upcoming debut album from the Black Is Beautiful Experience collective and Rhymshot recording label. Inspired by photographer and activist Kwame Brathwaite’s iconic portrait of his wife and original Grandassa Model Sikolo Brathwaite, this piece pays tribute to the legacy and enduring influence of the Black Is Beautiful movement and the pioneering Grandassa Models, a group of women who challenged and redefined beauty standards in the 1960s by fearlessly embracing natural Black beauty.
Featuring the powerful spoken word of Sikolo Brathwaite, this piece is brought to life by the extraordinary talent of Marcus Gilmore, a phenomenal Black woman-led ensemble and Brandee Younger who appears courtesy of Impulse! Records.
In honor of Women's History Month, we pay homage to the trailblazing Black women artists who used art and fashion as tools of empowerment and expression 62 years ago and laid the groundwork for future generations to celebrate Black beauty and heritage."

"Nicholas Payton unveils a new album “Drip,” a new take on six previously recorded original compositions.
The idea for a sweet, slick reworking of the tracks came in 2021 when Payton found himself stuck in Atlanta after a show, his return to New Orleans stalled by Hurricane Ida. Making the most of his downtime and his location, Payton sought out a studio session with musicians who had the precision and soul to capture the energy of signature R&B classics pioneered there." - Nicholas Payton

"The iconic Sketches of Spain, Payton’s latest release, is the second for his own imprint, BMF Records™. Released on September 24th, 2013, for his 40th birthday week, Grammy-winning trumpeter Nicholas Payton offered the world a present worthy of his immense skills: a live concert performance of the iconic Miles Davis-Gil Evans collaboration. Framing Payton’s virtuosic playing is a 19-piece ensemble comprised of 15 brass and woodwinds and a harpist drawn from the Sinfonieorchester Basel with conductor Dennis Russell Davies, and Payton’s long-time collaborators Vicente Archer on bass, Marcus Gilmore on drums, and Daniel Sadownick on percussion. The LA Times says Payton and band ‘shine a new light' on Mile Davis' 'knotty brilliance’."
