Now-Again Presents "Function Underground: The Black & Brown American Rock Sound 1972-1977"

"The idea of “progressivism” that took over rock music after psychedelia’s heyday in the late 1960s belatedly spilled over to funk. In the early 1970s, as the underground/psychedelic fire burnt out in the white rock world, it roared to a blaze in the black and brown musical communities. Function Underground shines light on an important and overlooked part of rock n’ roll’s history and talented ensembles that toiled in the shadows, derided by their peers.

14 tracks by Jimi Macon, Black Maffia, Blacklites and more, many reissued for the first time. LP and CD packaged with booklet containing extensive notes on an overlooked and important portion of rock n’ roll’s history. LP contains download card for WAV files."

Run Away To Blissful Neo-Soul On "Voyager" by Moonchild (Album Stream)

By JR on 1:44 PM

"‘Voyager’ is the third full-length album from LA’s Moonchild, whose candid style of soul and new-school jazz has propelled them onto a swirling, emotionally charged journey of the heart. Since 2014 they have dedicated their time and energy into honing dreamlike and ethereal compositions which explore the intricacies of relationships with emotional nuance. The band cites influences like D’Angelo, Hiatus Kaiyote and J. Most as playing a key part in expanding the group's musical horizons which none more evident than on ‘Voyager’.

Following two years after their widely-praised album ‘Please Rewind’, the album marks a new level of maturity in the band’s sound. Building on their trademark sound, the band brought in a harpist and string players to their usual line-up, enriching standout motifs; these range from the importance of making time for loved ones, to the feeling of waking up in the middle of the night and missing someone, to the deep bonds shared between mother and child.

Since cementing themselves into the vibrant LA soul scene, Moonchild have released two albums and collaborated or toured with highly-respected names in the soul-jazz crowd including Stevie Wonder, Jill Scott, India.Arie, Leela James, The Internet (Odd Future’s Syd tha Kyd & Matt Martians) and more. Along the way, Moonchild have accumulated a host of iconic supporters from Robert Glasper and Laura Mvula to James Poyser, Jazzy Jeff, Jose James, 9th Wonder and Tyler, The Creator who have all shown love for the band. "The third in our series of Miami soul overviews gathers 15 tracks from Frank Williams’ exceptional Saadia label. As Willie Clarke and Johnny Pearsall’s Deep City label was folding, the house band at Criteria studios were just getting started. Together with his arranger Willie “Little Beaver” Hale, Williams produced just 10 singles, but all are peerless examples of the original Miami sound." - Numero Group

DJ Sav One & DJ Dyllemma Mix Rhymes by Mic Legends On "FreeOfStyle Mixtape"

By JR on 9:32 AM

"DJ Dyllemma and I put this mix together reminiscing on the days of golden era CASSETTE mixtapes. It should bring you back to that analog vibe with the sound, substance and live mixing. The theme of the mix is an ongoing debate over the two meanings of “Freestyle”: off the top of the head verses and/or unreleased writtens (coined by Big Daddy Kane in the Intro as ‘FreeOfStyle’). The mix is 43 minutes long (all golden era content) and may one day be Side B to a larger cassette release with original content on Side A. The sources are old cassettes, white label vinyl and an occasional CD. Peace to the all the DJs who laid the foundation and pushed the culture forward - this tape is as much an ode to those pioneering DJs as is to the MCs. Peace." - DJ Sav One

Singer Hil St Soul Makes The Feeling Of Love Profound On "The Sweetest Pain"

Soul music that feels so good words can't explain, courtesy of British singer Hilary Mwelwa aka Hil St Soul who is here to love you down on her acoustic cover of Dexter Wansel's 1979 gem "The Sweetest Pain".

Hilary Mwelwa moved from Lusaka, Zambia, to England when she was five years old -- just in time for kindergarten. She studied biochemistry at the University of London, but a strong love for music pushed her to leave school and follow her heart. An a cappella demo of Stevie Wonder/Clarence Paul/Morris Broadnax's "Until You Come Back to Me," cut in 1995, started everything for the enthusiastic singer; she loved the song so much she waxed two versions for her debut CD, jointly written and produced with Victor Redwood Sawyerr (aka VRS, a founding member of Blak Twang), the other half of Hil St. Soul.

Ximeno Release Reggae Cover of Mtume's "Juicy Fruit" by Christine Lewin

"SWEET AS HONEY DEW. The enigmatic music lovers at Ximeno have blessed us with a repress of this excellent slice of disco reggae heat. Derrick Harriott’s sweet sweet lovers’ rendition of The Dazz Band’s “Let It Whip” is slowed down to a rocksteady groove but retains the original’s funky analog synth bassline and crunchy electronic snare fills.
The flip, though, is where it gets hot: Christine Lewin’s cover of Mtume’s “Juicy Fruit” (erroneously credited to Susan Cadogan on the center label) is arranged so perfectly, it’s hard to believe this wasn’t a reggae tune to begin with: deep deep bass licks and seriously funky synth stabs punching through Lewin’s angelic voice. Two floor fillers for the price of one (good luck finding the OGs). Ximeno, keep them coming! Recommended." - Turntable Lab

Now available on 7" here at Turntable Lab.

Sabiduría is the Spanish word for WISDOM, and the message is clear from the outset that wisdom is the exalted value that should guide us all. His intent with Sabidurí a, as it has been with all of his recordings, is to create art that will be analyzed and understood well beyond his time.

Many elements of style can be found within the experience of SABIDURÍA - funk, soul, jazz and pop are all present alongside the guiding force of rhythm. This is music you can sit to, drive to, and of course, DANCE to. The album features appearances from Donald Harrison Jr, Marcus Miller, Alfredo de la Fe, Joe Locke, Johnny Rivero, Ronnie Cuber, and David Spinnoza. SABIDURÍA may well be the best Latin Jazz record ever made, and when the dance is over we will let history decide."

1994 St. Ides Malt Liquor Hip Hop Comp Gets Reissued To Colored Vinyl

"How was this even possible? Pretty much ALL the hip-hop greats spitting fire about one brand of malt liquor, and Biggie goes as far as saying: “Other brews, I’m not loving’ ya!” I mean, who was booking all these guys for St.Ides? That person could probably get Frank Ocean to drop Boys Don’t Cry like, yesterday, or get the Fugees back together.

Anyway, the songs (more like snippets) on the record definitely match the caliber of the artists, and the titles are just so sick: “My Malts Playing Tricks On Me,” “Get Some,” “Shaolin Brew,” “Thug Passion,” “Dogg Food ’n’ Drank,” “St. Ides in the LBC.” Ciroc or Dusse got nothing on St. Ides as far as endorsements are concerned, and make sure you're sippin’ on that crooked I when bumping this. Limited white vinyl version." - TurntableLab

Nature Sounds Reissues 1969 LP by Soul Quartet The Exciters

By JR on 2:10 PM

"Formed in Queens, NY in the early 1960s, The Exciters were a dynamic R&B quartet consisting of lead singer Brenda Reid and her producer/writer husband Herb Rooney, plus vocalists Carolyn Johnson and Lillian Walker. The group rose to prominence in 1962, when their hit single “Tell Him” rose to #4 on the U.S. pop chart.

The Exciters continued releasing quality music for years, including their 1969 RCA album Caviar And Chitlins, a vintage slice of soul / R&B from perhaps the most important era in the genre’s history. Incidentally, a few years later the album’s producer Herb Rooney would go on to produce and write one of hip-hop’s most sampled records ever, “Synthetic Substitution” by Melvin Bliss. Long out-ofprint, Caviar And Chitlins is now available on vinyl for the first time in decades. Discover it now thanks to this official reissue from Nature Sounds."

The original pressing goes for $85 here at Amazon but you can now grab the reissue of "Caviar & Chitlins" here at Juno Records.
