"One Night At Morey’s: 1968 is drawn from the residency at Morey Baker’s Showplace Lounge in Detroit by the Lyman Woodard Trio. The trio consisted of Coffey on guitar, brilliant organist, Lyman Woodard, and drummer Melvin Davis, and could be found at Morey’s once a week. They played to a dedicated, often repeat, audience so the band kept the repertoire fresh and changing. One Night At Morey’s: 1968 follows last year’s Hot Coffey In The D: Burnin’ At Morey Baker’s Showplace Lounge released by Resonance Records, also drawn from the Morey’s residency, but with an entirely different track list.

All tracks on One Night At Morey’s: 1968 are previously unissued and come directly from the vaults of Dennis Coffey and producer partner, Mike Theodore. Tracks include original compositions, “Big City Lights,” “Mindbender,” and “Union Station,” as well as surprising and funky covers of “Billie’s Bounce” by Charlie Parker, “Burning Spear” by The Soul Strings, “Cissy Strut” by The Meters, “Eleanor Rigby” by The Beatles, “Groovin’” by The YoungRascals, and “I’m A Midnight Mover” by Wilson Pickett from the pen of both Pickett and Bobby Womack." - Omnivore Recordings

Guitar Great Dennis Coffey Releases Live '68 LP "Hot Coffey in the D: Burnin' at Morey Baker’s Showplace Lounge"

By JR on 3:13 PM

"Hand-numbered, 180g black vinyl, mastered by the legendary Bernie Grundman Mastering Studios and pressed by Record Technology, Inc. (RTI).

Never-before issued recordings from legendary Motown guitarist, Dennis Coffey, captured live at Morey Baker’s Showplace Lounge in Detroit in 1968. One of the Funk Brothers, as featured in the Grammy award winning documentary “Standing in The Shadows of Motown”, Coffey has played with countless musicians from Quincy Jones to Barbra Streisand, and Michael Jackson to Stevie Wonder.

Hot Coffey in the D was produced by Mike Theodore and Coffey, the same team that produced the recently rediscovered folk singer Rodriguez’s debut album Cold Fact (1970) and the soundtrack to the Academy Award winning documentary “Searching for Sugar Man”. These recordings showcase Coffey in his prime, raw and unfiltered, with fellow Detroiters organist Lyman Woodard (former musical director for Martha and the Vandellas) and drummer Melvin Davis (Smokey Robinson, Wayne Kramer).

The package features striking cover art by acclaimed comic book artist and Metro Detroit native, Bill Morrison (The Simpsons, Futurama), rare photos, as well as essays by veteran music journalist and album co-producer Kevin Goins, who interviewed Dennis Coffey, Melvin Davis and Mike Theodore for the project, and Resonance producer Zev Feldman."

PBS Documentary - "The Motown Bottom Line" & Bass Amp Of James Jamerson

Watch The Motown Bottom Line on PBS. See more from History Detectives.

The PBS show "History Detectives" sets out to solve a mystery of Motown Records and part of a puzzle within Detroit's important musical legacy. In 2012, bassist Steve Fischman wants to find out whether the Ampeg bass amplifier he possesses originally belonged to the legendary Motown bassist James Jamerson. As an uncredited in-house musician, James was known as "Motown's little secret" and is credited in playing bass on many of Motown's all-time classics, eventually achieving induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after his death in the 1980's.

Join in a fun journey as Steve Fischman travels Detroit to speak with a variety of people to uncover clues about this mysterious piece of audio equipment. Along the journey Steve runs into Dennis Coffey, another legend and a member of Motown The Funk Bros. band which Jamerson was also apart of. When asked what it was like to play with James, Coffey calls his late band member as "the best bass player in the world".

In addition to examining the career of James Jamerson, this mini-documentary covers important aspects of the legendary label of Motown, the importance of a talented bassist in the genre of Soul music and a look at what makes a good guitar amp. Enjoy a funky jam session between Dennis Coffey and James Jamerson Jr. towards the end of the episode.
