Mia Theodoratus brings moving emotions on her approach to strings for a performance to soothe the casual listener and surprise the average break-beat head. Mia is a composer, improviser and harpist who's goal is to express life through the harp using classical technique infused with the dynamics of free bop and the rhythm/feel of rock.
As a teacher she started the harp program at the Irish Arts Center in New York City, is head of the harp department at the Xaverian School and teaches out of her private studio. She studied at the Peabody Conservatory for two years before completing her BFA at UT at Austin, TX and has a MFA from California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA. Her harp instruction includes lessons with Susan Davids, Alice Chalifoux, Jeanne Chalifoux, Lucile Lawrence, Gloria Agostini and Susan Allen. For free improvisation she worked with Charlie Hayden, Roscoe Mitchell, Amiya Dasgupta and Wadada Leo Smith.
The beauty of Mia's harp playing on this song incorporates a unique style merging classical music with the Latin-influenced chords from an all-time Funk classic. Enjoy a beautiful harp cover of the immortal break-beat tune "Apache" by Incredible Bongo Band.
