Patrick Butler’s release, PRIME MOVER, was conceived to blend two of his favorite sounds, the bass clarinet, and vibraphone. The jazz funk sound of Butler is augmented by these unusual instruments.
“I always dug every record Bennie Maupin played the bass clarinet on. It just made the track," Butler says. In 2010, Butler cut Transcender with Joshua Harris on bass clarinet. The sound was so funky he had to do it again.

His albums have drawn numerous accolades from the Jazz community, including the Blue Note sessions "Kindred", "Black Action Figure", "The Grand Unification Theory", "African Tarantella: Dances With Duke" and the Grammy-nominated release "Urbanus" on Concord. "If any single young artist is going to be a major star in the next few years, it's Harris." says the Los Angeles Times.
"Ninety Miles" which is the focus of an interview with Jazzcorner.com is a 2011 album release by Stefon Harris, one which draws heavy influence from the music and culture of Cuba. The CD/DVD was recorded in Havana with saxophonist David Sánchez, trumpeter Christian Scott and a collective of master Cuban musicians. Listen to music from the album and hear him share thoughts behind the recording process in his interview with JazzCorner below. The fusion of traditional Jazz and Afro-Cuban music on "Ninety Miles" is quite nice and shows the diversity between how different cultures interpret music.
