"Love Is A Pendulum" In The Jazz Of Vibraphonist Joe Locke

Love Is A Pendulum is vibraphonist Joe Locke s fourth release on the Harlem-based Motema label. Joined by the members of his quartet - Robert Rodriguez (piano), Terreon Gully (drums) and Ricky Rodriguez (bass) - and special guests.

Locke again shows himself to be one of the most forward thinkers in the music today, as well as a man with a bountiful capacity to swing. The centerpiece of the disc is a five-movement suite based on a poem, Love Is A Pendulum, by the writer and musician Barbara Sfraga. Alto and soprano saxophonist Rosario Giuliani joins the band on six tracks. Tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin, guitarist Paul Bollenback and steel pan virtuoso Victor Provost are heard on two tunes apiece. German singer Theo Bleckmann adds his distinctive ethereal voice to Love Is A Planchette .

“Offering: The Music of Gil-Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson” by Charenee Wade

"Charenee Wade has the resume of a top-flight classic jazz singer. She came in 2nd place in the 2010 Thelonious Monk Competition. She’s a regular presence at Jazz at Lincoln Center, navigating the classic songbook with ease. She’s recorded with hard-swinging jazz stalwarts like bassist Rufus Reid and pianist Eric Reed. And, she teaches at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, passing on the tradition to a new generation of musicians.

But even with this traditional grounding, Wade is by no means a straight-laced jazz traditionalist. Instead, she uses her jazz background to explore a whole range of modern music. This Friday, Ms. Wade will perform at The Jazz Gallery with her new group, the Gil Scott Forum—a group that teases out the swinging undercurrents in the conscious music of Gil Scott-Heron." - jazzspeaks.org

Enjoy the soothing electric relaxation of vocalist Charanee Wada as she pays tribute to a timeless movement of soulful music and social activism on her 2015 LP “Offering: The Music of Gil-Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson”. Guests include vibraphonist Stephon Harris and bassist Marcus Miller.
