"SWEET AS HONEY DEW. The enigmatic music lovers at Ximeno have blessed us with a repress of this excellent slice of disco reggae heat. Derrick Harriott’s sweet sweet lovers’ rendition of The Dazz Band’s “Let It Whip” is slowed down to a rocksteady groove but retains the original’s funky analog synth bassline and crunchy electronic snare fills.
The flip, though, is where it gets hot: Christine Lewin’s cover of Mtume’s “Juicy Fruit” (erroneously credited to Susan Cadogan on the center label) is arranged so perfectly, it’s hard to believe this wasn’t a reggae tune to begin with: deep deep bass licks and seriously funky synth stabs punching through Lewin’s angelic voice. Two floor fillers for the price of one (good luck finding the OGs). Ximeno, keep them coming! Recommended." - Turntable Lab

"Earlier this week, the inimitable George Clinton sat for not one but two conversations about his work and where it comes from. First, he spoke with the host of NPR Music's R&B channel, Jason King, about soul music, swag and Kendrick Lamar. Then, after the Museum Of The Moving Image screened Clinton's 20-year-old film Cosmic Slop, he took the stage for an interview conducted by songwriter, producer and musician James Mtume. The two industry veterans traded stories about Miles Davis and staying in the game. Clinton's memoir, Brothers Be, Yo Like George, Ain't That Funkin' Kind Of Hard On You?, was released earlier this month along with five new songs, and a new Funkadelic album is hard on its heels." - NPR
"Rock The Boat" was written by Static Major, Eric Seats & Rapture Stewart for Aaliyah's third studio album, Aaliyah (2001). The album version was produced by Keybeats.
This remix by UK producer Damien Mendis was created in July 2001 shortly after her passing and in corporates the drum machine from Mtume's "Juicy Fruit" - interspersed with filtered & looped Aaliyah vocals, additional guitar licks, synth sounds, and tiny drops of Loose Ends "Hanging On A String".
