The iconic musician, singer of the hugely popular The Glamorous Life and drummer for the incomparable Prince, has combined careers of singer, songwriter, arranger, drummer, band member and, in recent years, musical director for the likes of Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez.
Escovedo picked up the drumsticks and started making music at the precocious age of three, while watching her legendary father, percussionist Pete Escovedo rehearse. Escovedo delivered her first solo performance to a live audience two years later and has since established herself as one of the most talented percussionist/drummers and vocalists in the world.
Sheila E. became a top session and touring musician before the age of 20, performing and/or recording with George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Billy Cobham, Con Funk Shun and many others.
She played with Marvin Gaye on his final world tour, and toured and/or recorded with Diana Ross, Quincy Jones, Gloria Estefan, Babyface, Patti LaBelle, Steve Nicks, Jennifer Lopez and Kanye West, among others.
Despite the demands of her commitment to making music, Sheila E. remains heavily involved in charitable organisations, most notably as co-chair of the Lil’ Angel Bunny Foundation, focusing on implementing music and the arts as an alternative method of therapy for abused, abandoned children.
“There are so many children and young adults who need our help,” she said.
“We’re trying to help them get their lives together, by building their confidence through music and the arts. It’s just another way for me to do God’s will. I believe we are here to help people in our lifetime. We must give of ourselves to truly live.”
