Audio: Rock From Heltah Skeltah on The CMFamalam Show in 2000

This appearance by Rock aka Rockness Monsta of Heltah Skeltah is one of my favorite radio rhyming moments of any Boot Camp Click member, it's dark and street as it gets but humorous at the same time due to the comedic presence of Bobbito and Sear. Rock's threatening visual lyrics and Brooklyn street persona are displayed in this live freestyle, bringing energy and spontaneity into a performance unlike what you may hear on his records.

This reminds me of the skill and original direction founded by BCC in writing visual street images to spark your imagination, leaving you to picture scenes of gutter street life. This level of art is an important, sometimes overlooked contribution to hip hop which balances the more simple-minded writers who attempt to capture the ghetto in their work. This is what I hope for the streets of New York to sound like, coming from a talented MC who has lived the life.

This radio appearance was around the time after Heltah Skeltah's Magnum Force release and a few independent 12" singles were floating around like The Bizness and The Crab Inn / Caca Gosa Vixen. I remember wondering when the next HS album would drop then, but it seems like they did a good job in building their separate catalogs on the underground. Enjoy this one from the legendary CMFamalam show on WKCR.
