I like the spacey, Jazz-fusion synth vibe throughout this EP from Mecca:83 in addition to nice moments of live musical contribution, ear-opening use of effects and an underlying influence of Dilla in the drumming. "The Life Sketches EP" presents some interesting ideas and vibes in Jazz/electronic music-influenced Hip Hop.

About The Artist/Release:
Mecca:83 (or Rise/REdefinition depending on who you ask), better known to his friends as Evan Jones (born September 18th 1983 in Macclesfield, UK), is a beat technician, remixer, artist & semi professional crate digger. He began making music in high school when he & a friend co-purchased a tascam tape recorder from their local Pawn Shop. Cue long adolescent summers making stop-tape beats on his parent’s hi fi before graduating to an SP303 and an Akai S950 at
university.
Fast forward a few years and following a chance encounter with Deborah Jordan (
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Deborah-Jordan/75122154621) (Silhouette Brown/Panacea) on Myspace, he eventually signed to the london based Futuristica Music (http://www.myspace.com/futuristicamusic) imprint. Production and remix credits ensued in the following years for the likes of Replife, Deborah Jordan, Velben, Low Budget Soul & Jazz Chronicles. Subsequent solo releases under both the Rise & Mecca:83 aliases havereceived radio play & respect from the likes of Giles Peterson (http://www.gillespetersonworldwide.com/2011/02/gp-on-bbc-radio-1-hercules-the-love-affair-02-2-11/) (Radio 1), Jay Scarlett (http://ampsoul.blogspot.com/2010/04/mecca83-3-for-free-ep.html)(Ampsoul), Simon Harrison (http://www.basic-soul.co.uk/radio/show-558.htm) (Basic Soul) & the Moovmnt (http://www.moovmnt.com/2010/05/26/mecca83-3-for-free-ep/) blog to
name a few.
With his new new project, Mecca continues from where the previous "3 For Free" EP left off. Expect to hear soulful instrumental beats fused with a healthy dose of analog synthesis, drawing influence from the golden era sounds of Pete Rock as much as the current instrumental beat scene.
The debut Rise album "Messages" is also available now on Futuristica Music.
