Ralph McDaniels Behind The Scenes Of Kane's "Ain't No Half Steppin'" Video

Ralph McDaniels takes a moment to reflect with NPR about the debut video for one of Hip Hop's greatest MCs Big Daddy Kane, a person whom he calls "the Muhammad Ali of hip-hop". "Ain't No Half Steppin'" gathers many intriguing elements of inner city life such as boxing, gambling, the sights of New York while presenting the flamboyant style of Kane for a video which broke new boundaries of how we "see" Hip Hop. This must have been one of the first Hip Hop videos I've ever seen. I feel it still holds up well 'til this day due to the creative approach of the director, Ralph McDaniels.

Ralph McDaniels memories of the video shoot: "We shot this video in the Puck Building on Lafayette street. A lot of videos were shot at that particular time in that building. The whole idea was to compare hip-hop to a sport, and in this case it was boxing and it was cards. The whole idea is that it's a game and Kane is the champion — he's the Muhammad Ali of hip-hop. You can't beat him."
