PBS Documentary - "The Motown Bottom Line" & Bass Amp Of James Jamerson

Watch The Motown Bottom Line on PBS. See more from History Detectives.

The PBS show "History Detectives" sets out to solve a mystery of Motown Records and part of a puzzle within Detroit's important musical legacy. In 2012, bassist Steve Fischman wants to find out whether the Ampeg bass amplifier he possesses originally belonged to the legendary Motown bassist James Jamerson. As an uncredited in-house musician, James was known as "Motown's little secret" and is credited in playing bass on many of Motown's all-time classics, eventually achieving induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after his death in the 1980's.

Join in a fun journey as Steve Fischman travels Detroit to speak with a variety of people to uncover clues about this mysterious piece of audio equipment. Along the journey Steve runs into Dennis Coffey, another legend and a member of Motown The Funk Bros. band which Jamerson was also apart of. When asked what it was like to play with James, Coffey calls his late band member as "the best bass player in the world".

In addition to examining the career of James Jamerson, this mini-documentary covers important aspects of the legendary label of Motown, the importance of a talented bassist in the genre of Soul music and a look at what makes a good guitar amp. Enjoy a funky jam session between Dennis Coffey and James Jamerson Jr. towards the end of the episode.
