From The Blue Note Archives: Donald Byrd, Live at Montreux from July 5, 1973 (Audio)

To the delight of Jazz fans in 2013, Blue Note Records pays tribute to the great Donald Byrd by releasing this 1973 recording of his performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Thanks to Wax Poetics for the heads up on this special release from the archives of one of the greatest Jazz record labels.

Words from Don Was President, Blue Note Records

"As teenagers in Detroit during the 1960s, my friends and I regarded Donald Byrd with the same lofty respect reserved for other hometown musical heroes like Smokey Robinson, The MC5, Elvin Jones, Mitch Ryder, Aretha Franklin and John Lee Hooker....they were all amazing artists who were changing the face of music by exporting the sounds of our city to the rest of the world. The music of Donald Byrd was ubiquitous back then...cats like the legendary Motor City jazz disc jockey, Ed Love, would hit tracks like "Nai Nai" from "Free Form" and "Christo Redentor" from "A New Perspective" on a nightly basis...Later on, in the 1970s, Mr. Byrd started adding a healthy dose of Detroit-style funk to his records and his innovative music could be heard blasting out of dashboard mounted 8 track players and back seat subwoofers all over town...He was a Motor City Trumpet Revolutionary and his timeless music will never be forgotten.

Shortly after Mr. Byrd's passing on February 4th, we got an email from the noted British music icon, Gilles Petersen, inquiring about a legendary performance from 1973's Montreux Jazz Festival. Blue Note's Curator-In-Chief, Michael Cuscuna, told us that it had, indeed, been recorded and subsequently mixed for release by Bob Belden in 1999. Inexplicably, it has remained hidden in the Blue Note vaults - until now. The tapes are wonderful and reveal a far more raw and gritty side to Donald Byrd's 70's music than his studio recordings might suggest....

As a special tribute to this Jazz Immortal and as a gift to the legions of aficionados who, like all of us at Blue Note Records, treasure the music he's left behind, we are honored to present - for the first time - Donald Byrd, Live at Montreux from July 5, 1973."

Personnel:
Donald Byrd, Trumpet, Fluegelhorn, Vocals; Fonce Mizell, Trumpet, Vocals; Allan Barnes, Tenor Sax, Flute; Nathan Davis, Tenor Sax, Soprano Sax; Kevin Toney, Electric Piano; Larry Mizell, Synthesizer; Barney Perry, Electric Guitar; Henry Franklin, Electric Bass; Keith Killgo, Drums, Vocals; Ray Armando, Conga, Percussion.

"Black Orgasmo" by Alex Puddu on Schema Records

By JR on 10:32 AM

Funky sounds by composer/multi-instrumentalist Alex Puddu on Schema Records. "Black Orgasmo" draws influence from adult film theme music of the 70's for a strong groove with heavy bass and an outstanding female vocal which runs throughout the track. This is one of two songs from his 2012 self titled EP, check out more funky theme music from his full length album ‘The Golden Age of Danish Pornography' below.

Bio:

"Alex Puddu is one of the most direct and creative artists and composers of our days; a multi-instrumentalist with visions and skills.

He was born in Rome in 1967 and moved to Copenhagen, Denmark in the summer of 1987. He began his music career as a drummer at the age of fifteen.
He is truly devoted to the Italian vintage sound of the giallo/poliziottesco and horror movies from the early seventies: Jazz/percussive, psych-groove.
His work is inspired by soundtrack maestros such as Piccioni, Umiliani, Cipriani, Morricone, Ferrio, De Masi and Micalizzi. Alex Puddu released his first solo album "Chasing The Scorpion's Tail" with his cinematic band Alex Puddu and the Butterfly Collectors on the danish label April Records followed later by four other albums.
Over the past couple of years (2010/11), Alex has been very productive, working on new sounds and compositions for soundtracks - writing, arranging, and producing no less than four soundtracks: "Eastern Army", "Mosaic", "Hell is Other People" and the latest: "The Golden Age of Danish Pornography".

Recently, he has been recording his new album "Registrazioni al Buio" to be out 2013."

Here’s both shows where all the parts are cleanly edited together in great quality… full interview & freestyle sessions! And for those who don’t know, the Gavin was a HUGE Hiphop & Rap convention held in San Francisco every year during the early-mid 90s. Enjoy…"

James Brown Addresses The Black Community In A 1967 Radio PSA (Rare Audio)

By JR on 1:28 PM

Filed Under:

This rare speech which chronicles a state of social unrest of late 1960's inner city America comes directly from the mind of a Black musician who remains one of the most influential and powerful voices of the ghetto. In an unreleased promo single for radio use, James Brown voices his inner thoughts and frustrations toward the Black community to lead them in a more positive direction in the midst of a struggle. This rare audio was contributed by Hoppy Stone of WFMU's Beware Of The Blog. Check them out for more rare audio and American history depicted through music.

Words from WFMU:

"This is a rarity: an unreleased promotional single that was probably distributed to radio stations only. There is no discographical info whatsoever (there isn't even a label on the record), but it must date from around 1967, which would be the time of national race riots that it is obviously intended to try and quell. JB had done a famous concert at Boston Garden during a severe time of unrest in '67 to 'keep people off the streets', and this little record will give you some idea of what was going through the Godfather's mind at that time, expressed in his own totally unique way! Not much more you can say about it; it speaks volumes for itself."

DJ Rahdu Presents Iconoclast: Dilla Tributes & Remakes Mix

By JR on 10:31 AM

Words from DJ Radhu:

"As the month of February began I read a FB status requesting the favor of no mixes or reworks of Dilla’s work this year. Discontent with the trendy and overwhelming amount of Dilla output this time of year, I could understand the intent of the statement but disagreed with the sentiment. To many, Dilla is a mark to be achieved or surpassed and recreating or remixing his work may be just the tool to help them find their own sound. Just as Dilla admired Pete Rock and probably tried his hand at flipping some of Pete’s works, these producers/singers/MCs are showing their love and respect to a fallen hero.
Since his passing, I’ve collected a large number of hours of Dilla tributes, jacks, remakes, flips, etc and here is my hour long mix of these reworks. Please enjoy!"

"Rubble Kings": The Story of NYC's 1970s Gang Subculture & Hip Hop

By JR on 7:45 AM

Check out the trailer of "Rubble Kings" the story of NYC's 1970s gang subculture and how it influenced the cultural phenomenon that is now known as Hip Hop. This insightful documentary is in the process of trying to meet a Kickstarter goal to gain a wider release.

Launched: Feb 19, 2013
Funding ends: Mar 21, 2013
Remind Me
A BRIEF INTRO

From 1968 to 1975, gangs ruled New York City. Beyond the idealistic hopes of the civil rights movement lay an unfocused rage. Neither law enforcement nor social agency could end the escalating bloodshed. Peace came only through the most unlikely and courageous of events that would change the world for generations to come by giving birth to hip-hop culture. Rubble Kings, the most comprehensive documentation of life during this era of gang rule to date, tells the story of how a few extraordinary, forgotten people did the impossible, and how their actions impacted the world over.

Rubble Kings is a feature length documentary about the New York city street gangs of the late ‘60s / ‘70s and their influence on hip-hop culture.

"The film's lively roster of former Savage Skulls, Black Spades, Assassinators, Ghetto Brothers, Hitmen or Turban Queens, expressively recalling and explaining gang culture, is matched only by its flood of down-and-dirty archival imagery." (Variety.com)

Independent and self-funded, Rubble Kings needs your help!

The movie is pretty much finished. Unfortunately we can't release or show the film beyond festivals or private screenings because the music rights and archival footage must first be cleared. Being able to pay for the songs and footage in this film is crucial to telling this story accurately and in its truest form.

The Music Of Guitarist Mike Sims (N.W.A., Dr. Dre, George Benson, Cypress Hill)

By JR on 6:23 PM

The lively rhythm and uplifting sound of Michael Sims carries a feeling of serenity as he lends a magic touch to each composition. Having lent his talents to a diverse spectrum of artists from Hip Hop to Pop, Michael's primary foundation is in a guitar-driven sound of smooth Jazz inspired by the signature sound of George Benson whom is one of his famous collaborators. Feel the energy as Mike applies technical skill to the strings over a dreamy arrangement of instrumentation as a sound of Jazz which delivers a sense of freedom.

Bio:

After listening to “Room with a Groove”, it’s easy to understand why the musical talents of Michael Sims are constantly being sought out, from one end of the musical spectrum to the other. Fueled by his long-time love of jazz, and propelled by years of lending his guitar expertise and talent to a variety of artists, ranging from, N.W.A., Dr. Dre, George Benson, Cypress Hill, and EZ E, to Peter White and Michael Bolton, guitarist Michael Sims is ready to share his second solo album, “Room with a Groove”. Michael’s chameleon-like ability and soulful knack to command a track, with such style and magnetism, allows the listener to fall into a smooth and idyllic groove.

Multi-talented, Sims plays bass, keyboards and drums as well as guitar, but in spite of his impressive credentials & obvious talent, he waited awhile before stepping into the spotlight. "For years I was more like a student in a way, listening to jazz and reggae, and yet, I was working in the hip hop world. A certain amount of all of it stuck, and suddenly I realized I had a style of my own."

Through Donovan Smith, Sims was introduced to Dr. Dre, just as West Coast Hip Hop burst onto the charts. "I was working on some demos at Donovan’s studio where those guys were coming in and laying down tracks, and we got to know each other. Then, just around the time they’d gotten to the point where their record had sold about a half a million copies, they needed to replace their guitar player. They called me in, and I worked on a song for Michel’le called “Something in My Heart” which went gold. From that point on, I was entrenched in the Ruthless Records camp." Soon he went on to work with artists including Ice Cube, Vanessa Williams, Ralph Tresvant, Domino, Andrea Martin, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Tyler Collins, and Brandy.

Michael is currently in the studio at work on his third release.

DJ Harrison Shows His Versatility For The Funk on "TuNEROCK"

By JR on 10:02 PM

Nice batch of Funk music by DJ Harrison who displays a variety of approaches on one project, this album doesn't go for one overall mood which is what makes it interesting. The sounds of "TuNEROCK" range from carefree mellow vibes to let your mind drift to raw and dirty styles of Funk/Rock which totally flips the mood for a more dangerous feel.

Harrison is a multi-instrumentalist although the drums were his first choice. Drawing from a long line of influences such as J Dilla, Madlib, Herbie Hancock, and Richmond, VA local Ohbliv, Harrison’s beats catch you off guard as he finds all sorts of ways to make your ears happy and your head nod.

Psychedelic Garage Rock: The Music Of Saucerians

By JR on 3:43 PM

"SAUCERIANS play psychedelic groovy music, ideal for a cocktail lounge spinning through the galaxy. They could be tagged as "garage, spy, jazz, lounge, psychedelic, and 60's trashy rock n' roll." They are all these things, yet altogether unique. The purely Instrumental trio ARE: guitarist John Voskamp (of the late great Peglegasus), drummer Rhett Hubertus (of Rhett and Dean and Crisis Hotlines), and organist Nathan Brown (Of Adam Green, Grand Mal, Turner Cody, and the NYC anti-folk scene).

In the tradition of composers such as Lalo Shiffron and Dick Hyman, the band's sound is evocative of 1960s TV shows about time traveling secret agents from another planet. They also generate home-fried fuzzed out minimalist driving rock and roll. The songs are angular and concise, and often drift into expansive psychedelia. Saucerians play road music for an Autobahn on Mars."

Gloria lends her beautiful voice to a classic as she elevates the divine emotion of Minnie Ripperton's "Inside My Love". Gloria's soothing tone and graceful performance hit just the right notes to achieve the spine-tingling feelings which Minnie brought on the original. In addition, the rhythm thumps with a modernized approach of R&B that is electrifying.
