"Going Black: The Legacy of Philly Soul Radio " examines the legacy of Black radio, with a special focus on the legendary WDAS in Philadelphia. The story of Black radio in Philadelphia is actually the story of a music that would have gone undiscovered, of Civil Rights and progress in the African-American community, and of how the radio medium has changed in the last century. The documentary special is hosted by legendary Sound of Philadelphia (TSOP) music producer and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Kenny Gamble . For more about the program, visit our website: www.mightyradio.org .
Today, a lot of people don't know what the term "Black radio" means. But starting in the 1950s, Black radio stations around the country became the pulse of African-American communities, and served as their megaphone during the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. Stations like WDAS in Philly, WDIA in Memphis, WWRL and WBLS in NYC, WHUR and WOL in DC, WERD in Atlanta, WVON in Chicago, WLAC in Nashville, WMRY in New Orleans and KWBR in San Francisco featured radio personalities with styles all their own who played records you'd never get to hear on mainstream radio. Beyond being hip radio stations, these were pipelines into the Black community where you'd get the latest news on current events and the Civil Rights Movement — at a time when the mainstream media wasn't covering these stories from a Black perspective.
The documentary features conversations with well-known disc jockeys, radio professionals, record company executives, musicians, journalists and scholars. Listeners will hear first-person accounts of Civil Rights events and rare archival audio of Black radio air checks from the 60s and 70s, including a 1964 interview with Malcolm X, just a few months before his assassination. The documentary also includes a soundtrack featuring R&B, jazz, gospel and soul hits from the 50s through the 80s, especially from the Sound of Philadelphia."

Experience The Swinging 60's Soul Revival of Nick Waterhouse On "Holly" (LP Snippets)

Review by contactmusic.com:
"LA-based musician and producer Nick Waterhouse's latest record Holly will be released March 3 on Innovative Leisure. The new music follows his 2012 debut Time's All Gone ('the soul album of 2012' MOJO) and Waterhouse's production work on friends and label mates Allah-La's self titled record, both of which received widespread acclaim on either side of the Atlantic.
The first of a series of mix tapes we debuted over at the Vinyl District recently. The Secret Process Mixtape is a mix of American Moog funk, Eastern Euro Sound Library and synth bliss.
I got a lesson book and CD from Carol Kaye at one of her bass seminars in LA and when I popped this thing in it was whack! All these excerpts (from cassette?) of her teaching and talking…needles to say I had to intro with it and follow with a much slept on LP from Hugo Montenegro. It’s a Stevie Wonder Moog cover album. Montenegro did a few of these and they are all brilliant. I picked it up for $2.00!
The mix continues with music both Shawn Lee and I have a mutual obsession with…library music. We picked from a bunch of different stuff from British to German and even American library. The final track, “Secret Process,” is from an Omnimusic record which was an American library company. Super hard to find LPs as most of the stuff on this mix is.” - AM
"Last summer, Prodigy and The Alchemist released their sophomore collaborative album entitled, Albert Einstein. Along with feature assistance from Raekwon, Havoc, Roc Marciano, Domo Genesis, and Action Bronson; the slept on project generally remained in our playlist when music releases got dry. Today, the pair offers up four more tracks in a bonus EP dubbed P=mc2, which has no features. Those of you who are still listening to the original version can head over to iTunes right now and extra addition of tracks to your original playlist."

Pianist Randy Ingram began with the historical figures of jazz music and connected them with contemporary styles and practices. On his new recording Sky/Lift, Ingram assembled a collection of seven original compositions and a piece written by one of his heroes, pianist Bill Evans. With a nod to Evans’s collaboration with guitarist Jim Hall, Ingram enlisted the fabulous guitarist Mike Moreno to be a melodic/harmonic foil to his piano on half of the recording’s tracks.
Rising Son makes for the perfect title for the Blue Note debut from Takuya Kuroda, an ascendant trumpeter and composer who is perhaps best known for his inspired presence in vocalist José James’ band over the past several years. In fact, Rising Son finds Kuroda stepping forth to helm James’ remarkable band – featuring keyboardist Kris Bowers, electric bassist Solomon Dorsey, drummer Nate Smith, and trombonist Corey King – with James in the producer’s chair instead of behind the microphone (excepting a hypnotic version of the Roy Ayers classic “Everybody Loves The Sunshine” to which James lends vocals).
SHERYL BAILEY / A Meeting of Minds: This guitar led, organ trio nails it so hard you won't believe the effortless enjoyment flowing from it your first time through. Honed by this crew playing these tunes live over the last year, the swing, the flow and the vibe all conspire to knock you out. A sweet killer of a date where everyone is so in the pocket that it's almost scary, you can't help but come away from this a full blooded Bailey fan. Top shelf all the way.
In a search for their origins through music, Daniel Crawford and Cleveland Jones honor The Motherland on "Home". Enter the souls of two talented musicians as their emotions profoundly describe their pride of heritage and the pursuit of freedom. This triumphant moment of music is bound to make you see Africa as Daniel's wonderful groove drives the soul-stirring vocals of Cleveland.
Cincinnati-based pianist Phil DeGreg has made his mark in the jazz world over the past three decades as a recording artist, composer, and pedagogue. On "Brazilian People" he lends his talent on keys and arrangement to set a joyful tone on a 10-track LP which displays a fine marriage between the mood, rhythm and vibrations of Latin and Jazz music.
Masta Ace, Wordsworth, Punchline & Stricklin carry the torch for vivd storytelling in Hip Hop as they unload the weight of their lives on the somber and cinematic "Spun A Web". Definitely one of those type of tracks where you can go back and gain something from it after the initial listen as the crew display their artistry and competitive edge as eMCs.

Incognito Founder ‘Bluey’ Maunick Delivers Good Vibes & Distinction On "Citrus Sun"
By JR on 3:00 PM
Filed Under: Acid Jazz , Bluey of Incognito , Covers , Incognito , Marvin Gaye , Soul Music
If your looking for good festive vibes in an approach to music, look no further than the great summertime Soul atmosphere created by Incognito guitarist/producer Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick on his 2014 LP "Citrus Sun". As a pioneer of Acid Jazz, this talented veteran is here to make you get down to a variety of upbeat grooves which blend traditional elements of Soul with a touch of Jazz and upbeat dance rhythm.
Review by Dome Records UK:
"Incognito founder Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick presents his alter ego – eight-piece band Citrus Sun featuring acclaimed UK guitarist Jim Mullen.
Says Bluey: “Citrus Sun is a project born of my love for Jim’s playing and the desire to be part of a band with him. We are now good friends and I have collaborated with him on several projects, including Terry Callier and Mario Biondi, but as a teenager in the Seventies I was just a fan. He is an amazing musician.”
Mullen’s credits in a 40-year career include Brian Auger, Average White Band, Kokomo, Jimmy Witherspoon and the pioneering British jazz funk band Morrissey-Mullen.
The obvious difference from Incognito is that Citrus Sun is largely instrumental, with vocals from Valerie Etienne (of Galliano and Jamiroquai) on “What’s Going On” and Terry Callier’s “What Color Is Love”. There was an earlier Citrus Sun album released back in 2000, which also featured Jim Mullen in the line-up, and the new album “People of Tomorrow” is a renewal of that relationship.
“In terms of sound it is also more sparse as it features the sole trumpet reminiscent of the late Donald Byrd, and there is a cool Latin jazz flavour on some of the cuts”, says Bluey. “The distinctive sound of Jim Mullen’s thumbing guitar brings a tonal quality that is very different to Incognito, but at times it is obvious that this is the Incognito rhythm section and for that we make no excuses, instead celebrating the fact that this is a new project by the same band with me at the helm”.
Bluey worked as a producer on several tracks with the late Terry Callier and he regards “What Colour Is Love” as a Callier classic that was an obvious choice for the band to cover. He also worked on “What’s Going On” as part of the Red Bull Music Academy/RAI Radio jam session with Thundercat, Nate Smith and Jason Lindner, over the original recording of Marvin Gaye’s voice, and this experience inspired the Citrus Sun version.
Some tracks are more connected with the Incognito sound. “You’re So Far Away” and “Cooking With Walter” (a title inspired by the TV series Breaking Bad) began their lives as jams with the Incognito rhythm section and title track “People of Tomorrow” was co-written by Bluey and Incognito bass player Francis Hylton.
“Tonight We Dance” and “Mais Uma Vez (One More Time)” are stunning Latin jazz tunes that were a result of Bluey listening to Herbie Mann’s “inspirational” album “Latin Mann (Afro To Bossa To Blues)”.
“People of Tomorrow” is a fine addition to the Bluey discography, and shows him continuing to branch out following the 2013 release of his debut solo album “Leap of Faith”. Citrus Sun will be playing live dates during 2014, beginning with an album launch concert at London’s Under The Bridge on April 17
As he says: “The Citrus Sun is rising – come catch the sunshine!”
The full line-up of Citrus Sun is Bluey (guitar and vocals), Jim Mullen (guitar),
Valerie Etienne (vocals), together with Incognito members Matt Cooper (keyboards), Francis Hylton (bass), Francesco Mendolia (drums), Joao Caetano (percussion) and Dominic Glover (trumpet)."

"The Monk Of Funk" by Andrew 'Hacksaw" Harney

Filed Under: Andrew 'Hacksaw" Harney (guitarist , Blues , Funk , multi-instrumentalist)
"While currently attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, Andrew "Hacksaw" Harney is the Perfect Storm on the North Shore in Beverly Massachusettes. A multi-instrumentalist with advanced chops forged from dedication to his craft, Hacksaw is becoming a standard name in the Northeast. Having already played with with Darrell Scott from the Band of Joy (featuring Robert Plant fronting the band), The James Montgomery Band, Barrence Whitfield and the Savages, Harper and Midwest Kind, Henley Douglas Jr., Chris Stovall Brown, Shirley Lewis and of course, Hacksaw Harney's Blues Haven, the future is looking bright for this young bluesman.
Influenced by B.B. King, Shawn Lane, Lee Ritenour, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Los Lobos, Johnny Winter, Gary Hoey and many more, his guitar playing is embellished by a speedy virtuous melodic phrasing that is captivating. Hacksaw is also strong on the bass, mandolin, piano, trombone, viola, violin, banjo and harmonica. Influenced by Paul Butterfield and John Popper from Blues Traveler, Hacksaw's chops are right up there with them. Fearless and dedicated you will see Hacksaw Harney challenging his influences in the very near future. Hacksaw is currently recording for two upcoming artists as well as planning his CD release in the early fall 2013. Expect to see him coming to a stage near you soon!"

"Bobby Rush has built a strong reputation in the blues world. In the early 1970s he had his first hit record titled Chicken Heads. However he was active a long time before this particular song. In the mid/late 1960s he already released 45s under his own name, but also produced other artists including the totally obscure Len & the P.A.'s. Their sole 45rpm single Soul Block b/w Believe Me was released on Bobby's own Rush label in around 1968. For all deep-funk fans out there, Soul block has been recently featured on the compilation album “Feeling Nice Vol.2” (TRLP/CD-9026)."
"Lil' Buck is a well known name within collectors of raw soul & funk 45rpm singles. His debut release on the local La Lousianne label became one of the most sought after funk 45s of all time. (Monkey In A Sack b/w Cat Scream) However, he released one more 45 with the Top Cats on La Lousianne which not many people know (Don't Make Me Cry b/w Cat's Back). It will ever remain a mystery why his second release is that much rarer than Monkey In A Sack. Tramp Records is proud to announce the re-release of Don't Make Me Cry with Cat's Back on the flip after more than 40 years of its initial release. The sound quality is simply amazing and it even comes with the original label artwork."

"Around the “sweet home” of Birmingham/Alabama, the mainstream radio stations would repeat the latest HOT 100 zingers off the R&B conveyer-belt, much like the rest of the US. That is until visionary tastemaker Roderick Moody - aka DJ Rahdu - brought his hit Diamond Soul XXXperience Show to the ‘Bama airwaves. For 2 hours out of 24, 1 day out of 7, they’d play nothing but soulful music. Soul was the link, even if it had a hip hop, house, Caribbean or jazzy vibe to it, it had to be soulful. “The only no-show was R&B … you could hear that after we were done,” explains Rahdu - who was able to bottle his on-air success, taking it first to the streets via open mic events, before launching his BamaLoveSoul.com website to over a million alternative music fans across the free world. Then in 2012, the commercially released and critically acclaimed “BamaLoveSoul Presents On Deck”, would go on to fly off the shelves of record store Dusty Groove – as they say in Birmingham - faster than a hound sucks an egg.
For On Deck 2, wading through a wealth of new material submitted specifically for his new project, Rahdu has selected twelve brand new tracks, created by tomorrow’s found generation. Beginning with the jazzy keys of Rippy Austin’s ‘Fallen’, Rahdu describes the intro “As a walk through the pearly gates of heaven” before Joomanji follows up with ‘Intoxicated’ which “slaps you right in the face”. Every lick sounding fresh, as the selection expertly ebbs & flows. Stephanie Nicole’s spaced out funk ‘Diligence’ paves the way for the ethereal beauty of James Tillman’s voice on ‘Shangri La’. The artists, were handpicked, given 6 months to prepare their submissions and were all keen to put their best foot forward. Jevon Reynolds had the damnedest time coming up with his track before emailing Rahdu with the words “I had a breakthrough” – the Midnight Mix of ‘Silence’ left Rahdu, when asked to comment, ironically speechless. Humus, a bunch of Finns, get in on the action too, replacing GDNA’s soulful house ‘Calm’ (which is anything but) with the horn driven, gorgeously sung serenade ‘I Do (I Do)’.
“As a DJ coming up, I’d sometimes only demand that the groove was hot,” Says Rahdu, “but with this music, you really have to listen to the words.” Alabama home-grown talent Fayth Hope and her neo jazz ‘Warrior’ sounds perfectly in tune with the blaxploitation glide of J Finesse’s ‘Drums, Claps & Snaps … Ya Dig’ before the nuvo-electronic instrumental of Buscrates 16 Bit Ensemble’s ‘In The Distance’ comes to the forefront. Aisha Mars illuminates the finale with ‘Ultraviolet’, “leaving you in a dream,” says Rahdu before adding “and fulfilled … hopefully.”"
Feel the magic of YSE and Frank H. Carter III, as they deliver a soulful dance groove to speak about getting caught up in the moment of love. If you love the standard of 80's R&B music and vocalists such as Vandross, Kashif and Will Downing this version of "Magic In Your Eyes" should be a treat as these talents deliver good vibes in classic tradition.

This is a collection of songs dedicated to the working class and loosely inspired by NC’s failing economy. Supastition was inspired to write the EP after NC became the first state to eliminate federal unemployment benefits in 2013. A lot of people, including Supa, felt the effects of it. While he was searching for a job himself, Supastition documented those struggles first hand with the Honest Living EP. Croup is no stranger to Supastition music. They recorded their first official song (Adrenaline) on Supastition's The Deadline. Since then, they've been working together and crafting songs. Croup is one of the few producers who didn't change his sound just to get major placements. As a unit, Supa and Croup both refuse to compromise their sound and only care to appeal to those who dig that vintage sounding hip hop.

In addition, Jake One has recently dropped a sample kit of original royalty-free Soul grooves tailored for producers with musician G Koop. Listen to samples and download Jake One & G Koops "12 Piece" kit here.
Brooklyn born in ’84, Atlanta raised since ’93, Ed emerged into the world of hip-hop during the golden era. Upon first listen, an instant fascination for the art form emerged. Conscientious lyricist with a genuine love for the culture and a creative voice that resonates through the art of rap. Everything's real on the serious tip as he envisions Hip Hop and life as war on "Simulated Combat".

Based in Brooklyn, the Hip Hop educator and lyricist has released several albums founded Fresh Roots Music and toured the globe extensively (Europe, South America, and Africa) since 2008. On "Gone Is The Thrill", Hired Gun flows intellectually against a soulful Blues-inspired groove accompanied by a chorus which drives the emotion of the MC's determined message home with passionate singing.
Pete Flux & Parental Release "Traveling Thought" EP feat. Rob-O, K-Def, Kalhex & Venom

The transatlantic collaboration between emcee Pete Flux and producer Parental has taken their music to a new level on their first full EP Traveling Thought. Right from the get go, the twinkling keys and adamantine kick drums on the opening track Science set the tone for a strong 90s boom bap throwback experience.
While the sonic stylings are most reminiscent of hip hop's golden era, the beats and raps never sound remotely dated. Parental's production edges more towards pristine cleanliness than guttural grime, yet he maintains raw 90s flavour through the timbre and layering of jazzy samples. As for the rhymes, Pete Flux flows over the instrumentals like a cloud front over mountains. Flux artfully juggles cadences to match and accentuate the rhythmic patterns of Parental's beats on top of dropping countless quotables that get stuck in your head for days.
Dope from the first listen, the EP only gets better with replay as the cleverness of the lyricism and the depth of the instrumentals sinks in. Warming Up is an infectiously catchy stand out track with Pete Flux on a particularly dextrous verbal attack over sublime drums juxtaposed with a reverberating guitar sample. A real sense of honesty and passion is felt throughout the project, perhaps exemplified most with True To Your Art featuring Kalhex. A direct ode to the art of music, Le Makizar and Lex join Pete Flux to bless the mic en français, reaching deep into their souls to portray their personal perspectives on hip hop.
Closing out the record is Illness, featuring Rob-O of the legendary InI, a cut that wouldn't sound out of place if it was released in '95. Sleeping on this duo is strictly forbidden, so ingest mad stimulants, keep this EP on the turntable, and look out for the next chapter of the lethal connection.

Choosing one of the happier songs on a debut album packed with anger and aggression, George Fields lends a joyful sound of boom-bap to his remix of Big L's "MVP". Get loose and let ya hands clap to this nostalgic sound of 90's Hip Hop as thumping drums carry soulful sound in George's cool re-arrangement of the Bill Withers classic "Just The Two Of Us".

“Words is a re-introduction, and aural celebration of hip-hop’s most influential MC. Inspired by the vinyls that birthed the art form, the film is a portrait of two sides of an artist (A & B) and the streets and city he inspired. Two of his verses have been remixed … the words will never change.”
The Trey J’s are a Southern Soul duo who are sure to make you feel the love as they belt out soulful harmonies on their one and only 45 release from the 70's which has now re-issued via Soul Junction Records. “I Found It All In You” b/w “We Got A Thing (Going On)” stands among the obscure quality Soul releases of the 60's and 70's which were driven by love-based songwriting and heartache. This reissue is now available exclusively at Juno UK.
James Binford had previously written the basic lyrics for a songs entitled “We Got A Thing Going On” and one day while at the Pink Pussy Cat with Tee Fletcher accompanying him at the piano he began to recite the lyric’s. Together they composed this and a further song entitled “I Found It All In You” which would gain a release on Tee’s Tee Gem label (PS-4044).
Although the Trey J’s only ever had the one 45 release, they continued to performed live shows on both the college and Chitlin circuit as the Trey J’s Review which also featured some of the members of a later Atlanta ensemble by the name of Brick. Brick went on to enjoy a successful recording career from the mid 70’s through to the mid 80’s scoring a number 1 R&B/pop hit in 1976 with the song “Dazz”. The Trey J’s also once featured on a tour that also included such Chicago recording artists, as The Chi-lites and Ruby Andrews. This came about due to the marriage of James Binford’s first wife’s cousin to Ruby Andrews. The end of the road for the Trey J’s came with imprisonment of James Binford in 1992 where he has since remained although he is due for parole sometime during 2014. Joseph Smith later became a school teacher but sadly passed away during 2012.
The Trey J’s “I Found It All In You” is currently enjoying a current reactivation due to it’s dramatic funky edge guitar and horn rifts fitting perfectly into the current funky soul genre. While it’s haunting deep soul ballad flip “We Got A Thing (Going On)” is a must for any real soul collector.

Nebraska band A Ferocious Jungle Cat deliver high-paced Funk to make your heart race on "Jungle Cat". This 6-piece band paint the vision of a female with their edgy sound which combines a smooth arrangement of keys and vocals with rough breakbeat-heavy rhythm and bass groove laced with Rock elements.
