Collectors Item - Music, Art and Life: Damu The Fudgemunk
Insight Innovates & Damu The Fudgemunk Get Inspired by KPM Library Music

"Enchanted Spirits is the third selection from producer Damu the Fudgemunk's KPM Crate Diggers series album, "Conversation Peace". Featuring his longtime friend Insight Innovates on the mic, Enchanted Spirits picks up where they left off as one of the most potent teams preserving hip hop's classic traditions of beats and rhymes.

Mystical orchestral arrangements and drama filled stabs curated from KPM's 1000 series on vinyl display the golden moments found throughout the thousands of tracks in their library. Adding punchy drums, rhythmic scratching, Damu says, "The original composition was just beautiful. It reminds me of something John Williams would score. Being in London hearing this amazing music was a magical feeling, hence the title Enchanted Spirits. We knew this was the right choice for the collab. It's undeniable hip hop!""

Redefinition Records producer Damu The Fudgemunk keeps heads nodding with the instrumental versions of his album recorded with MC Raw Poetic. The mellow and jazzy vibe-out entitled "Calling" is a nice standout from the project. Enjoy a good 10 minutes of neck-snapping Soul as Damu shows progression in layered and melodic beatmaking. In addition, Nas Kingston provides an homage to Damu's music on "The Fudgemunk Tape VOl.01

Damu the Fudgemunk and Raw Poetic remain deep within the classic tradition of jazzy sampled loops and entertaining lyricism of life and Hip Hop. Kilawatt 1.5 - Hole Up / Streamline EP features Damu refining his identity as a producer with a stylistic approach from the 90's which combines the feel of loops with long solo performances on the vibraphone for a unique Jazz/Hip Hop sound.

Listen to: Eric Lau - "The Mission EP"

Enjoy the 2012 EP from UK producer Eric Lau, a Hip Hop presentation which includes a 15-TRACK deluxe edition vinyl, featuring contributions from Fatima, Olivier Daysoul, Chris "Daddy" Dave, Alex Bonfanti & Damu The Fudgemunk. I like to think of Eric's distinct production vibe as melodic, spaced-out Jazz fusion incorporated to the boom-bap, sample-based sound of Hip Hop. Listen for yourself and absorb the beats and rhymes of "The Mission EP".

Taking from the influence of early 90's neighborhood representation of MCing, Damu lets you know where he's from on "DC Joint". Damu gets visual on this song by detailing the ruff ghetto  environment of Washington D.C. through a creative flow backed by a heavy drum groove and scratches. If his label ReDef records hadn't indicated this was made in 2011 I would have assumed it was a rare release from around '90, "D.C. Joint" carries the production qualities and a signature rhyme style that makes Hip Hop from that era sought-after by it's listeners.

This sounds interesting. I've been digging both the melodic, synth production sound of Union and the dusty, Jazz-inspired boom-bap of Damu The Fudgemunk for awhile now, hopefully you have had the chance to as well. On the new single "Time Leak" they collaborate with Talib Kweli for a forthcoming project on Fat Beats records which will be available November 1, 2011.
