Lance Ferguson Reminds Us Of Heaven on "Rare Groove Spectrum, Vol. 3"

"Rare Groove Spectrum, Vol. 3" is heaven in musical form to those who receive solace in obscure rhythms. The fine selection of reworks of classics by Lance Ferguson demonstrates his command of the groove and dedication to 70's Jazz-Funk tradition. Press play and you'll feel like you're floating on a cloud driven by the groovy influence of labels such as Blue Note, CTI and Flying Dutchman. My favorite: the Latin rework of Eddie Harris's "Losalamitoslatinfunklovesong".

The Voices Of East Harlem's "Right On Be Free" Arrives Remastered With Bonus Tracks

Bear witness to a very inspiring moment in music history as The Voices Of East Harlem bear their hearts on behalf of inner city people. This uplifting blend of Gospel/Soul/Funk is bound to make you want to get up no matter what walk of life you're from. As a Harlem resident, I'm always intrigued by this and many works of art which were created this tumultuous period of the community during the 70's. Decades later, we now have the remastered version of this cult classic which includes 11 bonus tracks.

Above, The Voices Of East Harlem perform in concert footage from Sing Sing prison back in 1972. The Voices Of East Harlem were a community choir that grew from an inner city action project in 1969.

The Voices Of East Harlem's "Right On Be Free" Remastered With Bonus Tracks is also available on mp3 and CD here at Amazon. An original 1972 print advertisement from Elektra Records is available here on eBay.

The Mysterious Electronic Sound Of Mort Garson Gets Reissued by Sacred Bones Records

If you're in the mood for some spacey, dramatic and mysterious sounds, Mort Garson is the architect of music to put you on edge. Here is the bio from his newly-reissued catalog:

"Mort Garson is the ultimate Jack of all trades. He is best known for his pioneering work in electronic music - his albums in the 1960s and 1970s were among the first to feature Moog synthesizers and make up a rich catalogue in which cult classic Plantasia proudly sits. But he has time and time again dabbled in a wider array of sounds, from lounge hits, New Age soundscapes and sonic mysteries of the occult to producing and arranging credits by the likes of Bill Withers and Arthur Prysock.

In 1974 Garson provided music for the American neo-noir action and blaxploitation film Black Eye, starring Fred Williamson. The soundtrack to Black Eye shows yet again another fascinating side to Garson’s remarkable talent as a composer. Heavily influenced by soul, funk, and jazz, Garson cleverly fuses dynamic brass sections and funky basslines with synthesizers resulting in unconventional sound textures that blend the classic blaxploitation soundtrack tones with electronic elements and experimental sounds."  - Sacred Bones Records

You can get yourself a digital download of this reissue here at the Sacred Bones website, but for the cassette reissue check here on eBay.

Putting The Fear In Funk: The Horrifying Sounds of Calender & The Lafayette Afro Rock Band

Two bands show how the genre of Funk is so diverse and boundless, it can flip the concept of horror on it's head. Like Michael Jackson's "Thriller", this music is built to make you get down and be the cure for your rigor Motis. In '76, Calender & The Lafayette Afro Rock Band get groovy in the face of fear, turning legendary monsters into a funky get down.

Strut Records provides the Bandcamp reissue of "Disco Frankenstein" and Essential Media Group provides the digital Apple Music and CD remaster of "It's A Monster".

Takin' The Funk To Heaven In '77: The Music of Baunchi and The Funky Kidds

Elevate yourself with a trippy experience of The Funk that sounds like a blend of early Funkadelic and Sly Stone. Baunchi and The Funky Kidds lead you on the stairway to heaven on their EP, and quite a ride it is. The wail of the guitar paired with a drunken vocal style against groovy rhythms results in the frantic mood you'll experience on the "Zoom Music Factory EP"

This project was reissued by Symphonical Records. Check out more rare Funk and Soul from their catalog here.
