Beats by AleGory Music - Fall 2011

It is interesting to hear a musician with formal training who can bring their skills for a nice balance of Hip Hop music which is next-level but carries the simplistic approach of the traditional producer/beatdigger. AleGory is diverse in his approach to music, but for those interested in Hip Hop he's lent his production talents to M-Dot, Singapore Kane, Re-Surch as well as Roc Battle beat showcases. The Boston-based musician has the rhythm of Hip Hop drumming to get your head nodding right off the bat while bringing an additional musical touch in loop-based production through his wonderful melodies and compositions.

In scoring for TV, music supervision, mixing, Hip Hop production or working with international artists,  AleGory is deserving of your attention if your a music-lover.

Video: Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis & Maceo Parker Live @ Jazz à La Vilette

The legendary trio of Funk musicians Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis & Maceo Parker play their classics, live in France. Witness the live performance and timeless sounds from these talents who made James Brown sound at his best.

Here is a review from the performance by Wegofunk magazine:

"A memorable evening around the Fonk, closing the Jazz Festival in La Villette.
It was both magical and very original.

The first part was directed by Fred Wesley. Since a highly original brass band composed of giant fans were gathered around the teacher to stage arrangements worked in previous days. Pieces in his JB's funk version, the chorus format battle between the leftist group (saxes) and right (trumpets, trombones, flutes), a real energy. More Fred Wesley & The Horny Horns delivering us their best tracks in between.
In the end, a final good beef when Maceo Parker has come to put his two cents, the public history of teaser for the second part of the evening.

A special mention for sound engineers: despite the staggering number of musicians on stage, the mix was incredible clarity. The very low spare, round and said, that the brass did not mix in a slurry, but generally, on the contrary, we could hear every nuance of many arrangements. Sound beautiful, the acoustics of the place there being no stranger, with the enormous height of the canopy and a rebound broadcasting without ...

Then, Maceo Parker concert with his usual group. For those accustomed to being, no surprises: the Fonk, the Fonk, the Fonk! This might seem repetitive to those being used to his concerts (Lynn Collins and his song usual tribute to Ray Charles, etc.). But there is not to say, we never tire of it! We listen, it vibrates, it bounces off his shoes!

Side variations, the son of the brother of Maceo (former drummer of James Brown if I have all included) just make hip hop vibes on pieces, bassist just embarked on huge slaps of metal but limited O how captivating, and trombonist who has imposed a religious silence in the room during a solo piece, away from the microphone, an acoustic thrill!

We would have loved that Pewee Ellis and Fred Wesley joined the band for a final explosive, but it was not the case. For some reason, however, everything was together for that to happen, they sat behind the scenes, they were seen throughout the concert ...

In short, a moment of pure old school fonk you like them, and hope for the future of fonk: the mega Lunch amateur brass band had the sound as you like!"

Prepare for sounds to soothe the soul as the two producers experiment between compositions which combine the boom-bap pulse of Hip Hop with the dreamy musical vibes of Jazz fusion and Neo Soul. This is truly mood music designed to set a tone of relaxation by musicians who provide the aesthetics of Hip Hop and Soul.

Vintage Crates Radio Special Episode: A Dedication to Sylvia Robinson

The Vintage Crates radio show is about paying homage to great musical achievements of the past. This special episode is dedicated to a woman named Sylvia Robinson who had the idea to bring Hip Hop into recorded form for mass distribution with her release of The Sugar Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight". This was a pioneering move and arguably one of the most financially beneficial things to happen to people who would eventually use Hip Hop not only for spreading messages of peace and harmony, but to uplift their standard of living through a new commercial industry.

Jersey MC Vibes Reinvisions A Classic With "Dead Presidents"

By JR on 8:20 AM

It's apparent on this 2011 rein-visioning of "Dead Presidents" that Vibes has great ambition for achieving more in life which gives depth to his skillful approach on the mic. Listen as he scribes his own visions of dreams toward financial success which rival the skill and imagination of Jay-Z's classic. I think Vibes' approach to covering "Dead Presidents" is an example that dreaming big can result in impressive results as long as you follow through with your goal.

Look out for Vibes’ "Bay Parkway" street album which is to follow as a DJ Booth.net-hosted project.

Belgian Psychedelic Funk: "Happy Life Creator " by BRZZVLL

By JR on 4:48 PM

comments ( 0 )

This talented Belgian band takes chances with music in creating fine Jazz/Funk fusion compositions which carry trippy influences of psychedelia. On "Happy Life Creator" BRZZVLL present the fuzz sound of late 60's, early 70's fusion as they incorporate an eclectic combination of Rock-style guitar and synth parts, Funk instrumentation and touches of Jazz with deep vocal performances.

About BRZZVLL:

"BRZZVLL (pronounced Brazzaville) are a seven piece fusion band from Antwerp, Belgium. They play psychedelic jazz and funk with a modern twist. Belgium has quite a tradition for jazz and funk infused leftfield grooves. From Marc Moulin's ingenious Placebo to library funksters Les Chakakas / El Chicles to the much sampled JJ Band (ask Lord Finesse or Marley Marl), Belgium has always been a great place for diggin' deeper. So when our friend Lefto (Brusseles' premier beat ambassador and Brownswood cohort) told us about this great little band from Antwerp, our ears were wide open. After BRZZVLL band-leader Vincent Brijs played us the first demos of what would later become the album HAPPY LIFE CREATOR we had no other choice than offering the band a deal. Recorded in Antwerp and partly mixed by Ben Ladmin aka Nostalgia 77 (Tru Thoughts) in Brighton, HAPPY LIFE CREATOR has little in common with the cool retro sound mastered by Daptone or Truth & Soul. BRZZVLL are rooted in jazz, funk and afrobeat, but their music has an unmistakeably now sound. It is freaky, it is trippy and it follows no rules. Nine songs deep with vocal contributions from Ghanaian Spoken Word artist Joy Frempong ("Lucky Haircut") and Dez Mona frontman Gregory Frateur HAPPY LIFE CREATOR simply doesn't fit in any of the usual boxes!
BRZZVLL have gigged with the likes of Neville Brothers, Young Blood Brass Band, Marcus Miller and Alice Russell. Their debut album has been labeled "Best Belgian jazz album of 2008" by "Le Soir".

A Good Combination: NaS & Pete Rock Play Yorkfest Canada 2011 (Video)

Nas and Pete Rock collaborating together on a stage for a 2011 performance at York University marks a well-needed and anticipated return of a Hip Hop duo who combined to create magic in '94. This exclusive stage side footage shows an energetic crowd of students who rock to the classic sounds of the Queensbride lyricist and Mt. Vernon producer. According to the filmer HipHopCanadaTV, this concert marks the last which NaS intends to perform until his album "Life Is Good" drops in late 2011.

Roc Marciano - My Persona

Roc Marciano personifies his identity as an MC and ghetto visionary on "My Persona". "Half rapper, half-raptor", Roc attacks the mic over a soulful track by the Masterkraftsmen for a lyrical style which is smooth but deadly.

Something about their name told me this Jazz quartet had something edgy and original to present in their music. BADBADNOTGOOD presents an EP which compiles their previously released songs and covers, available as a free download.

BADBADNOTGOOD cover interesting territory in their approach to music which is bound to be an enlightening experience for the traditional Jazz lover. "Untitled - Nightmare - Yonkers" flows with mysterious vibes to groovy Rhodes-laced jazz rhythms while their cover of "Electric Relaxation" mixes traditional Jazz with the funk drumming of Hip Hop as the band draws influences from both Tribe and Ronnie Foster.

Each song shows the forward-thinking yet traditional Jazz approach of BADBADNOTGOOD as they present a variety of experimental compositions, while playing with exciting new ideas of rhythm and incorporation of their own melodic influences in covering classic Hip Hop tunes.

The bandcamp stream has 6 out of 12 songs included in the EP, more treats you will find in the download are their Jazz covers of Gangstarr's "Mass Appeal" Ol' Dirty Bastard's "Brooklyn Zoo" and more songs.

Video: Jamal & Malik Of Illegal - 1992 Interview & Freestyle

The hardcore teen style of Hip Hop sure ain't around anymore lol. After watching VH1's crack generation documentary I can kinda understand how artistic expression has changed drastically when looking back in retrospect on music and society. Jamal and Malik of Illegal and other 80's babies were products of a rougher generation which existed inner city America plagued with social oppression, broken homes and poverty.

Whether or not you believe in the dark image and hardcore attitude of Illegal, one things for certain is many teens of their generation were forced to grow up fast due to a difficult state of living within the ghetto. The artists who emerged from this oppression presented what is known as the hardcore Hip Hop sound of the 90's, a sound which Illegal represented to the fullest as the voice of the early 90's teenager in the hood.

In this 1992 interview the duo of Illegal represent live and direct from the streets of New York. They take a minute to speak on another popular teen group of the time who they disapproved of. At the end of the video, watch as Jamal and Malik kick a live freestyle which displayed a high amount of skill considering their young age.

Tragedy Khadafi - "Best Of Both Coast" Ft Killa Sha, King David and Planet Asia

This sick posse cut "Best Of Both Coast" Ft Killa Sha, King David and Planet Asia goes for the jugular with aggressive flows over a violin-laced track for a combination which is reminiscent of the soundtrack from a drama movie.

"Thug Matrix 3" by Tragedy Khadafi is looking like an album to check for as the Queensbridge veteran rips the mic on each single with fierce and competitive skill. Listen to snippets at iTunes of this modest 10 song presentation in 2011 from Tragedy, The Intelligent Hoodlum.

RZA Reflects On The Mafia Style & Production Influence Of Wu-Tang (Video)

As a Wu fan since '93 I had a feeling their vast influence would continue on from 2011 and beyond once I witnessed how Wu Tang's debut album "Enter The 36 Chambers" began to change the mind set of inner city society. RZA reflects from Rock The Bells 2011 on Wu Tang's introduction of their own cinematic album-making style to Hip Hop, their influential style of incorporating Mafia influences into songwriting and RZA personally influencing Havoc of Mobb Deep to become a producer.

Sample Of The Day: Santana vs. Scienz of Life on Dilla Forever

The Mike Bloomfield-influenced guitar playing of "Aquamarine" by Mexican Rock guitarist Carlos Santana lends a dark Jazz vibe in Scienz of Life's sampling for their J Dilla tribute "Dilla Forever". Santana's song takes on a number of transitions, going from a mellow guitar intro with synths and percussion into a darker guitar breakdown around the 1 minute mark. It is a combination of these song parts from "Aquamarine" which Scienz of Life transforms into their very own tribute to the late, great J Dilla, a dedication song which carries a feel of dark, Jazz fusion-based production rather than Rock. Both Santana and Scienz of Life provide creativity and passion in their approach to music making which is to be admired.

"Dilla Forever was recorded in 2006 by Scienz of Life shortly after the untimely passing of the GREAT Jay Dee aka DILLA. Scienz of Life recorded this joint to pay homage to a Legend in his own right! James D. Yancey know to so many as J Dilla. Spread Love yall!

Ayana and Ayinke Hipps of the talented vocal duo Aaries lend their beautiful voices to revive Minnie Ripperton's 1975 song "Baby, This Love I Have", also known as an original sample used for A Tribe Called Quest's "Check The Rhime" on their 2010 cover "Baby This Love". Not only do they cover her song, but add a new element of emotion through their outstanding singing ability and production. Aaries stand out with pure talent while offering an appreciation for great musical works of the past, bringing integrity, originality and nostalgic value in their music. Kool G Rap Interviewed by Chuck D's "And You Don't Stop" Radio Show 9/16/11

Chuck D of Public Enemy is known for presenting rich, truthful commentary in the form of Hip Hop throughout his career and now on his weekly show "And You Don't Stop". This weeks guest is Kool G Rap who discusses issues regarding generational differences he notices between Hip Hop, analyzing how the state of current society translates into life therefore creating a new outcome of the music and culture.

For the younger listeners of this interview, you might be surprised to hear what G Rap has to say about the struggles of his generation in comparison to today. He is an MC who expresses the urban struggle with perfection in rhyme form, one of the essential characteristics he emphasizes should always exist in Hip Hop music. Listen to this interview for a piece of G Rap's mind, the interview begins at 1 hour and 10 minutes in.

Listen as Kool G Rap connects with Dead Prez affiliates the A-Alikes for "To Live and Die in NY", a musical depiction of urban decay. This is the intensity of the streets New York Hip Hop is known for, piercing the eardrums with a combination of threatening beats and rhymes. This song is off the "Underground Overstood" compilation by Alchemetric Recordings which can be streamed in it's entirety here.

Hammondbeat Records Limited Series Sampler 2011

Hammondbeat Records presents their collective of musicians who combine to bring excellence in a revival of late 60's to mid 70's Hammond organ sound on the HBL Limited Series Sampler. From mellow Jazz to funky Soul grooves, each artist presents a variety of moods and styles in Hammond-based Jazz and Soul. For enthusiasts of funky Hammond music, this compilation will probably remind you of a great period where artists used the hammond organ to make wonderful music which is relaxing. Here is a review from the label:

"The Hammondbeat Limited series services those ep's, side-projects, one-offs, and off-beat styles that we dig but weren't quite right for the main album series at the time they got our attention. In hindsight we think we got it mostly right.

Initially we set out with a trio of EPs (which predates our vinyl series by a few years), the first of which was the recording debut of world renowned The Dansettes, now conquering the world as The Sweet Divines.

Then we ventured into some very strange territory with the baritone sax led Baron Samedi Ecstatic Soul Quintet. Probably the most un-Hammondbeat record we've produced, but jazz and fusion fans should take notice of this now retired band.

In conjunction with The Link Quartet's "Evolution" which saw the re-release of all of their pre-Hammondbeat catalog on one CD, we caught up with their European compilation-only appearances that followed on the bonus disc "Decade".

Nick Rossi Set will probably be our only truly jazz record and was recorded with the spirit of Blue Note and the Lou Donaldson crew in mind. We are very proud of this record but learned a few lessons about the jazz market in the U.s.

Paolo's "Applecore" was to be this little tribute EP that quickly evolved into a massive debut album called "A Bigger Tomorrow". So big in fact, that a bonus disc version was produced with the 2nd disc called "Building A Bigger Tomorrow" and as such "Applecore" only made it out digitally so that it could be included on the special edition of the album.

Paolo returns in the duo "Low Fidelity Jet-Set Orchestra" that is library music run amok. Fans of Shawn Lee should check this one out.

Modus' "Sounds From The Kitten Casino" broke the rules of Hammondbeat being primarily an instrumental label. That combined with being a finished production offered to us post mastering meant we missed out on the process necessary to it being a true Hammondbeat series title. We have mixed feelings about that as the record is really fantastic and certainly does feel like it belongs here. As such, it is the only HBL series title that got a minimix too, so be sure to check that out.

And finally, Flyjack's second EP got the golden touch from Paolo mid-production (don't ask), and was a project that came on the heels of our performance at SxSW in Austin with Flyjack backing Paolo Apollo Negri's SxSW Odyssey (check out that album in the Hammondbeat Booleg Series HBB). Flyjack took sometime off after this release, but are now back in the clubs again, so here's hoping that album will come into being."

Video: DJ Premier Speaks On Will Sessions' Remake Of His Beats On "Elmatic"

The Hip Hop vibe of these beats originally produced by DJ Premier are timeless and will continue to live on thanks to the musical abilities of Will Sessions. Listen as he lays the needle on the turntable of Detroit funk band Will Sessions' remake of "Memory Lane", "Represent" and "N.Y. State of Mind" to give his thoughts of how they translated, going from 1994 sample-based productions to 2011 live instrumentation.

Words of Wisdom From Jeru The Damaja & Lil' Dap in '94 (Video)

This short clip of Gangstarr Foundation members Jeru & Lil' Dap resonates with words of wisdom which are still relevant today about being a follower rather than leader while encouraging independence from the industry as a Hip Hop artist. This was before "The Sun Rises" or "Livin' Proof" dropped and both were only known for their powerful appearances on "I'm The Man" from Gangstarr's Daily Operation album. I hope this serves as inspiration for everyone out there who are working to maintain your own path in life.

"Cold Outside" by Balance and the Traveling Sounds

This is my favorite song from Balance and the Traveling Sounds' "Departure EP". The strong theme of love and relationship songwriting over soulful melodies on "Cold Outside" is describing of the overall soothing tone which "Departure EP" carries. This project has a unique balance of musical influences for a futuristic approach to Soul, as the musicians utilize a mix of Jazz and Soul with touches of Hip Hop which combine to compliment each other for a memorable listen.

Listen to the rest of "Departure EP" here at bandcamp which includes a great Dilla tribute.

As Frederick Douglass once said, "Without struggle, there is no progress". On "Growing Pains" Jelani gives you a piece of his mind as an independent adult who has a very optimistic focus upon life. This song has a smooth vibe and nostalgic tone to it, not only from the lyrics which speak upon memories we can all relate to but the sample from R&B trio Shalamar.

Audio: Questlove's Afro Picks - Live at Grande Halle de la Villette, Paris

It's interesting to hear Black Thought rock verses to the ethnically-rich sounds and rhythms of Afro beat music, then again it's not that surprising given the vast musical range and appreciation for Black music shown by The Roots over their illustrious career. If you're a fan of The Roots but you haven't yet embraced the sound of Afro Beat, this performance may enlighten you.

Afro Picks is the vision of Roots drummer Questlove who's focus was to present a unique show which offers a contemporary tribute to African musical history through a selection of tracks played by the Afro-Picks Big Band. The ensemble features Tony Allen on drums, Macy Gray, Black Thought, Mamani Keita, and Amp Fiddler, as well as members of Antibalas, the David Murray Big Band, The Roots, the Tony Allen Band, and Fela!, the Broadway musical. Questlove’s Afro-Picks is a unique proposition, straddling tradition and modernity, struggle and liberation, music and politics. This recording come straight from the show's premiere during the Jazz a la Villette festival at Parisienne venue La Grande Halle De La Villette, as part of the Paris stop of the RBMA World Tour 2011.

Rasheed Chappell - Future Before Nostalgia (snippets)

Dope sounding stuff right here, Rasheed Chappell presents a strong package of beats & rhymes on "Future Before Nostalgia". This album is here to remind you of the raw, classic sound of Hip Hop, one which is addictive and filled with deep lyrical content from a talented lyricist over dirty breakbeat, sample-laced sound from a sole producer. Kenny Dope handles the bulk of the production, digging deep in the crates to bringing raw emotion out of his collages of samples while Rasheed brings a fine balance of introspective writing about life while flexing impressive skills on the mic throughout.

Check out Rasheed's interview on The Halftime Radio Show 9/7/11 here at ustream as he breaks down "Future Before Nostalgia".

Athletic Mic League - “Get Go" (Prod. by Vaughan T)

This song is lyrically impressive in the tradition of 90's posse cuts but also carries a futuristic flair, thanks to the dope production sounds of Vaughan T of the Lab Techs. It bugged me out at the end to discover he sampled "Off On Your Own Girl" by Al B Sure, lol. “Get Go" by Athletic Mic League is featured on their forthcoming album "Giants of the Jungle", dropping soon on A-Side Worldwide Records.
