With his trio, Lenny covers "The M*A*S*H* Theme" with a beautiful display of performance on the piano and pay a fine tribute to Ray Bryant with the Latin-influenced "Cubano Chant".

Slice of Spice Records continues to release the motherload of Lord Finesse archive and remix material with the remix of "Kicking Flavor With My Man". The Brooklyn-born musician began in the late 1950s as a sideman, producer and songwriter eventually gaining placement to play on the Bob Dylan albums "Blonde On Blonde" and "Highway 61 Revisited" during the 60's. Some of his greatest and most well-known accomplishments are his credit as the fouder of Blood, Sweat, and Tears and as one of the most important members of the The Blues Project. "The Essence Vol. 1" by The Ruffcats

By JR on 9:29 AM

Enjoy some of the funkiest sounds of Jazz in 2012 from German band The Ruffcats on their full-length LP "The Essence Vol. 1". The name of the project is fitting as 8 musicians evoke the essence of funky 70's Jazz fusion by playing everything from mellow tunes to raw funk, afro-beat, jazz, psych and latin genres all combined into one interesting, experimental and authentic sound.

Bio:

The Ruffcats are one of Gemany's hardest working live bands. When it comes to heavy funk and progressive soul stylings, there ain't no competition for the 8 piece group from Berlin.

The Ruffcats are best known as the studio and backing band of German soul shouter Flo Mega, with whom they have played over 250 gigs over the last two years.

After providing the backbone for an impressive line-up of singers from Bajka to Jaguar Wright to Ladi6 it is now time for the Ruffcats to enter the spotlight as the main act with their first album „The Essence Pt.1“. Citing influences from hip-hop, soul, psych and jazz to Sa Ra Creative Partners, Dilla, Manfred Krug, Can and UK future bass, The Ruffcats aim to play new grooves in an analogue way. And that's excatly what they do on „The Essence Pt.1“.

The funny thing is that the album happened partly by accident. In late January the Ruffcats entered the legendary Lovelite studios in Berlin with little more in mind than taping some jam sessions. In the end they stayed for four days and recorded a full album on the spot. During the sessions Lovelite owner Jochen Ströh, became somewhat of an additional band member, working his trusty analogue 8-track recorder in ways that caused the band to go right back into the recording room and finish the job. Ströh recently recorded and produced Ebo Taylor's latest album for Strut Records and has hosted bands and musicians like the Whitefield Brothers, Tony Allen and Blitz the Ambassador at his studio.
The 11 raw jams on “The Essence Pt. 1” display a band paying hommage to the past whilst pushing their own boundaries to create something fresh and exciting. The musical spectrum covers raw funk, afro-beat, jazz, psych and latin played with a 2012 hip-hop state of mind.

The Ruffcats Story

Conducted by bandleader Uwe Breunig after turning away from his former job as the drummer for some of Germany's biggest reggae acts, The Ruffcats started out no more than himself, bass player Joh Weisberger and the idea of a forward-thinking new band concept. The current line-up consists of eight musicians deriving from places as diverse as Columbia, Hungary and Würzburg, all of who have moved to Berlin to pursuit a life in music, and eventually got together after playing Flomega's first major tour in March 2011.
Uwe coincidently ran into Flomega at an art exhibtition in Berlin (where else), after listening to him sing on a demo laying around in The Ruffcats' former rehearsal room. Just a couple of sessions later, “Pay Me Right” Flomega and The Ruffcats' first 12” single saw the light of day on MPM and The Ruffcats continued to stick with Flo on his inevitable way to stardom.
However, The Ruffcats have proven their ablity to adapt to vocalists of different genres on several occasions. Between 2008 and 2011 they have entertained a house band residency in Berlin's legendary Bohannon Club, supporting gigs and tours by the likes of Stacy Epps, Bajka, Jaguar Wright, Mic Donet ( of Voice Of Germany - fame), or Ladi6 – who was so impressed by the band's blind understanding that she quit rehearsals and entered the stage to a fully improvised show.

Bio:

Brian Culbertson began his quest in music at the age of 8 on piano, adding drums at 9, trombone at 10 then bass at 12. He grew up loving genre-crossing jazz-pop artists such as Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, Tower of Power, The Brecker Brothers, David Sanborn, Yellowjackets, Earth, Wind & Fire and Maynard Ferguson. So passionate and naturally gifted was Brian that his 7th grade piano recital consisted of all original pieces. He flourished in high school bands with his father, Jim Culbertson, as the school’s award-winning jazz band director, then spent two years at DePaul University before going on to compose commercial jingles for clients such as United Airlines, Oldsmobile, Sears and McDonald’s in Chicago’s competitive advertising community.

In 1994 - at age 20 - Brian self-produced his debut, Long Night Out, followed in short order by Modern Life (1995 - his first album to top R&R and Gavin’s Contemporary Jazz charts, driven by the hit single “Come To Me”) and After Hours (1996). With 1997’s Secrets, the hits kept comin’ with “So Good” and “On My Mind”. His 1999 follow-up Somethin’ Bout Love also sat high among the CJ Top 20 for nearly a year with the two #1 singles “Back In The Day” and “Do You Really Love Me?”

The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown 2012 ft. Rev. Desmond D'Angelo, George Clinton & more

This concept to gather a star-studded group of musicians for live Funk jamming is quite entertaining and innovative. The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown pays tribute to the history of American Funk while exploring various styles of music in one event. "Room 2012", features Rev. Desmond D'Angelo, George Clinton, Garry Shider, Kendra Foster, Belita Woods, and Sidney Barnes. Enjoy this soundcloud stream of 2 live performance sets from The Big Ol' Nasty Get down and prepare for their up coming release "Volume 1."

A word from their website thebigolnastygetdown.com:

"Born out of a love for an art form that paved the foundation for three decades of popular music, The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown is a star-studded tribute to the history of American Funk and authentically touches on almost every style of music. The Getdown was created by John Heintz (Bass/Producer/Founder), John-Paul Miller (multi instrumentalist/producer), & Derrick Johnson (multi instrumentalist). Getdown saw its earliest incarnation more than four years ago at a New Orleans gathering that would soon go down in history. What began as an all-star meeting of the minds in the Crescent City quickly gave rise to a collective of musicians working tirelessly to remind the music industry of why funk was such an important part of the American cultural evolution.

Drawing from a reserve of more than one hundred musicians, The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown has created an avenue for some of the genre’s most influential figures to share the stage with its future stars. Showcasing recorded and live appearances from many of funk’s luminaries and legends – notably George Clinton, Norwood Fisher,Belita Woods, Sidney Barnes, Gift of Gab, Kendra Foster, Patryce “Choc’let” Banks as well as grammy winning artists Kofi Burbridge and Agent 23 Skidoo – The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown is quickly generating an international reputation for producing some of the heaviest grooves heard in years.

Those interested in experiencing The Getdown’s Earth-shaking pocket need look no further than their up coming release Volume 1. Drawing upon the aforementioned heavyweights as well as members of Galactic, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Dumpstaphunk, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band and many more, the gang has assembled eleven unforgettable tracks over a number of sessions that took them all across the country. The result is a generous hour-long listen that has earned the praise of funk fans the world over.

The collective has received no shortage of critical attention either, their single, “College Funk” recently pulled down Funk/Groove Song of the year at the 2011 Hollywood Music in Media Awards.
After making such a huge splash in such a short time, it should come as no surprise that the Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown is already hard at work on the next step of their collective journey. Discussions for some dates both on US soil as well as abroad are underway for 2012. There are also rumors that a line-up for Volume 2 is starting to come together and will likely add another forty musicians from roughly thirty major bands to the already massive roster."
