The band was founded in 2014 by bass player and composer Sébastien Levanneur and its aim is to bring together 70's old school funk with the hippest actual sound laced with influences spanning from Steely Dan to Snarky Puppy, from The Crusaders to Lettuce and from Headhunters to Soulive. With mighty horn players, a rock and funky rhythm section with percussions added to it, The Big Hustle's music has a very large variety of soundscapes, from quiet and groovy moods to moments of furious soundblasts. Still, the music never Ioses the pace¬ and always stays true to the funk."
"$50 and an old recording console is where this starts. A couple years ago we decided to take a chance on an old, failing recording console in hopes that we could fix it and use it for some scratch recordings. As it turned out, we were able to fix it and it sounds pretty darn good! Everything you hear on this record was recorded and or mixed in this small studio, on this board. Some of the songs are old covers, some of them new and a few are original. All of them feature amazing musicians from the Portland music scene throwing down very soulful performances. The studio took on the name of the workhorse, diehard board, Topaz. The rest, as they say, is history!

"Recorded in Madrid in July 2017, Shamal Wind combines Chip Wickham’s globetrotting, spiritual jazz expeditions with hard-won schoolings in the funk. Following his critically acclaimed 2017 debut, La Sombra, the record draws on spiritual jazz influences like Yusef Lateef and Sahib Shihab, and rests on Chip’s many-sided experience as a musician, spanning left-field beat experiments to hard-hitting funk heavyweights.
After the Latin and flamenco whispers on La Sombra, Shamal Wind adds some Arab-influence percussion to the mix, most notably on the title track. Elsewhere, ‘Barrio 71’ sees him nodding to Shihab: high energy, lyrical and absorbing, with sax and the vibraphone taking the lead. ‘Snake Eyes’ taps into the meditative exaltations of modal jazz, while ‘Soho Strut’ nods to the jazz fusion, funk-influenced side of Chip’s playing.
Like the Persian Gulf winds referenced in the album title, which often mark the shift to a new season, this album signals a new chapter for Chip, opening up a newfound energy and inclusiveness in his music, and further expanding on what he achieved in the past year. “Shamal Wind” is a heavy record, built on strong foundations.
