Composer Johhny Pate Reflects On Making "Shaft In Africa", Inspiring Hip Hop Culture

The Universal Hip Hop Musuem of NYC presents a talk with Johhny Pate, film composer and one of the most influential musicians to Hip Hop culture. At 95 years of age, Pate tells his story of making "Shaft In Africa" to the museum. In addition, he recalls all the surprises he encountered when discovering how the song took on new life within Hip Hop culture. From politiking with Jay-Z, to inspiring b-boys and girls, this interview reveals the effect of a 70's Funk classic upon Hip Hop.

Be sure to turn up your volume when listening, Mr. Pate is a soft-spoken speaker. Below, a couple of my favorite uses of "Shaft In Africa" in Hip Hop music.
