Maestro Fresh-Wes and Showbiz of D.I.T.C. Interview From The Studio In '93

"For his 3rd album, "Naah Dis Kid Can't be from Canada", Maestro Fresh-Wes called on Showbiz to produce a few tracks and help him gain some crossover appeal in the U.S. Unfortunately, the album was not well-received and the tracks with Showbiz were not particularly memorable, with the exception of the album's best track Fine Tune Da Mic. The Fresh-Wes produced "Certs Wid Out Da Retsyn" and "Dat's My Nigga" are also overlooked classics"

"Free Angela" Sung By Larry Saunders The Prophet of Soul, Re-Issue by Secret Stash

By JR on 9:44 AM

Feast your ears to the soulful sounds of a re-issue of music directed towards ailing problems of society which was recorded back in the early 1970's. "Free Angela" is a rare project designed to promote social awareness in 1971 which follows in the lineage of memorable politically-influenced Soul music of it's era produced by artists such as Curtis Mayfield and Donny Hathaway. Check out the official press release below from Secret Stash Records:

"Amidst the socially and politically tumultuous 1960s and 1970s, Angela Davis emerged as one of the era’s most controversial figures. In the early 1970s, her arrest, incarceration, and trial made international headlines and inspired a movement to free her. In April of 2013 Free Angela & All Political Prisoners, an independent film about Davis was released to much critical acclaim, fetching awards at the Toronto International Film Festival Gala World Premiere, the London International Film Festival, as well as the Stockholm International Film Festival.

Originally released in 1971, the album Free Angela was sold to raise money for the National United Committee to Free Angela Davis. It was put together by Alexander Randolph – a singer, promoter, and record label owner from Virginia. The first half of the album was recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, beginning with the title track by Larry Saunders. On his songs, Saunders’ vocals float above and transcend the ethereal backing of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. His voice can be compared to singers like Donny Hathaway and Curtis Mayfield, but Saunders is his own man, with his own style. His work on this album is essential listening in the realm of socially conscious soul music. The second half of the album continues with solid mid-1960s rarities from Randolph’s Sound of Soul label. Sound of Soul has long been known to record collectors, with singles routinely fetching hundreds of dollars.

Working in coordination with Alexander Randolph, Secret Stash is excited to make available once again this soulful piece of history. Available on CD and vinyl, each contains an insert with detailed liner notes and photos: 8 pages of 11.5″ x 11.5″ for the LP and 32 page booklet for the CD. As always, the LP version includes a free digital download of the entire album and the CD version comes in a premium digipack."

Pre-Order Now! The first 350 copies include a bonus 45 repro of Oscar Wright’s sought after “Leave Me Alone” b/w “Fell in Love”.

"Since 2006, Manimalhouse has been bringing gritty, high energy funk and soul music to dance floors around the Pacific Northwest. Combining the sexy, powerful vocals of Reyna Mallare, fresh horn arrangements and non-stop energy, Manimalhouse turns every club into a house party.

Manimalhouse draws inspiration from every flavor of funky soul music. They're like the mix tape you want to throw on at the party of the year just when things are starting to get a little out of control. Manimalhouse has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with The Rebirth Brass Band, Orgone, The Hot 8 Brass Band, Charmaine Neville and Reggie Houston.

Manimalhouse features Miss Mallare on lead vocals, the unstoppable Dave Dernovsek on keyboards, the overwhelmingly handsome Dan Lee on guitar as well as Brody Lowe on backup vocals, Uncle Jeff Tummond on bass, Mark Blanding on drums and the powerhouse horn section of Wes Luttrell on trumpet and Reid Neuman on saxophone."

J-Dilla X Snake-Eyes - "Ruff Draft" (Remix EP)

By JR on 1:30 PM

In a new generation where J Dilla-inspired producers and imitators are abundant, Brooklyn New York's Snake Eyes stands out by touching upon the raw sound of the late producer with great familiarity on the remix of "Ruff Draft EP". Through this project Snake taps into the dark psychedelic Rock perspective of Dilla's sound for one of the most authentic takes on his signature sound yet. Nod your head to the rugged and ruff sounds as Snake Eyes pays homage to one of the best, with a focus on edgy Rock samples from the crates flipped in the style of Dilla.

Mark Will - "Live at the BBQ" feat. Tie Stick, Doob Solley & Zilla Cartel

Bringing menace and the fear-inducing street persona of a New York MC balanced with clever lyricism, Mike William joins his boys for a 2013 interpretation of Main Source's posse cut classic "Live From The BBQ". This showcase of rhymes provokes visions of the New York streets with enough detail to make the average listener cautious as each MC lets their dangerous presence, hunger and skill be known.

The rhyme style has been updated and modernized from the original crew's formula and 20 years after "Live From The BBQ's release, Mike Will's crew each bring their own identity to the track to demonstrate the talent which dwells on New York's streets in 2013.

A Tribute To Funky Flute Music: The Funk Kidz - "Hot Chocolate And Brown Sugar"

The Funk Kidz provide sounds to warm your soul in reviving a style reminiscent of blaxploitation theme music on the flute-laced groove "Hot Chocolate And Brown Sugar". A funky guitar and bass groove sets the foundation of this tune as the inspiration for Mr. Ju to get wild while keeping within the rhythm on flute. This unique and energetic sound of flute stands out as an expressive performance style characteristic of certain Jazz-Funk fusion songs of The 70's. Be sure to check for The Funk Kidz on Soundcloud as revivers of classic Funk.

If you like the sounds of The Funk Kidz, you'll love the compilation that Martini and Jopparelli have put together called "Funky Flute Fighters", music which highlights the funk approach of flute performers. Check out their description and selections below along with the zip download:

"The flute is a very versatile instrument. There are many different styles, many different ways of playing it. To prove that, I decided to put together a selection of funky, soul, jazz and disco tunes with the flute (mostly transverse flute) as the main ingredient. I hope you like it as I did.
Nowadays, it seems like the flute is disappearing from arrangements, you have guitars and keyboards playin the starring role in most tunes, and this is valid for reggae, disco and electronic music (an exception here : listen this gorgeous mix by Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton, pay attention to track 16).

Once upon a time, the flute was the king. I’m sure this great instrument will have its revenge. Let’s prepare for the great comeback. Meanwhile, let the funky flute fighters fight their battle…they’re fighting for flute survival."

Here’s the tracklist:

01 – Rashaan Roland Kirk – Ain’t No Sunshine.
This tune is (in my opinion) simply the best Ain’t No Sunshine interpretation ever (even if the Jose Feliciano version i discovered thanks to Soulman’s blog comes very close in terms of emotional impact). Kirk was a true virtuoso, he played three instruments together, look at the picture. How this could be possible, I still can’t imagine. In this tune, he plays the flute by singing into it while blowing. This is such a difficult technique, this man was blessed by a rare talent. Read a detailed review by the king of funky bloggers, mr. Funky 16 Corners here. You can also find more Kirk stuff on this excellent blog.

02 – Donald Byrd – Where Are We Going
This is one of the most famous tunes by Donald Byrd, from his massive-selling album BlackByrd on Blue Note Records, feat.the Mizell Brothers on production. If you love 90′s Hip Hop, then you love the Mizell sound. Period.

03 – The Crystalites – Concentration
The Crystalites were Derrick Harriott’s (see photo) band. This tune is magic, its sound is distinctive and modern, despite being from the sixty’s. I loved this tune since the first time I heard it and I was surprised to see Trentemoller, one of the most influential new producers in electronic music, putting this song into his Essential Mix. Funny note: in the BBC Essential Mix official tracklist the song is labeled as “unkonwn dub”: thus, we’re revealing a big secret right here! Anyway, check it out, a very modern track indeed.

04 – George Freeman – The Bump
From DustyGroove: “A legendary bit of funk, from one of the most overlooked guitarists ever! George Freeman’s got a sound and a style unlike any other player we can think of — an approach to funky guitar that’s often got a really hard touch on the strings, and which gets nice and noisy at the best funky moments.”

05 – S.O.U.L. – Burning Spear
Here you can find the while story about the original version by Richard Evans. Give props to Mr. Larry Grogan for this.

06 – Norwich Street Extension _ Can’t Fight the Feeling
I really dont’ know anything about this obscure band. Keb Darge (photo) discovered this tune, which was included in one of the LPs of the Legendary Deep Funk series. The only thing I can say about it is that it rocks!

07 – Sir Mack Rice – Dark Skin Woman (Part 1)
Sir Mack Rice, AKA The Ol’Gangsta, is still touring and we have been so lucky to see him in Italy last summer. He represents STAX Records, where it all began.

08 -Harris & Orr – Spread Love
This is an elegant disco tune from the late 70′s. The flute in the background is so smooth, perfectly fit for the dancin mood of the song. The vocals sounds a little bit like Gill Scott Heron, and it’s fun to imagine the ghetto poet singin this one at a party in Mancuso’s Loft in NY. Naah, couldn’t be…

09 -Kool and the gang – Electric frog part 1
Kool & The Gang need no presentation and no comments. We love them because they were so dope, and of course because their groove became one of hip hop’s most tasty ingredients.

10 -Joyce Williams _ The First Thing I Do in the Morning
What a lovely tune. I like it a lot when the voice engages a duet with the flute, alternating each other over a funky wah wah and a power bassline. This track was part of a Keb Darge selection too.

11 -The Fabulous Mark III _ Psycho part 1
A chase scene in a blaxploitation movie, that’s what this song is fit for. I don’t know if it has ever been used in a soundtrack, but that’s what it sounds like. The flute comes in when the guy being chased gets off the car and starts runnin, while the policeman begins to blast shots towards him. At least, that’s how I imagine that scene. Will he manage to escape?

12 – Joe Thomas – Thank You (Fall Etin Me Be Mice Elf Agin)
Big, big funky-disco tune. Joe Thomas‘ flute plays the starring part, and it’s really big.

13 – Frank Strazzeri – Cloudburst
The track is from 1976 (what a great year), Strazzeri was a Jazz master who played with Billie Holiday, Roy Eldridge, Maynard Ferguson. These names sound familiar if you are into breaks, in fact Frank‘s sounds are more hip hop than your average hip hop record. Starts slow, then raises the speed, till the flute comes in…

14 -The Chosen Few – Do Your Thing
I don’t know much about this band, but I know for sure they are present in each and every compilation of jamaican soul covers. They played Isaac hayes, they played all the classics. Studio One musicians, they took soul hits from the USA and played them in a jamaican way. That’s all.

15 – Pucho & His Latin Soul Brothers – Chitterlings Con Carne
The selection ends with the most amazing flute tune I’ve ever heard. You got to give props to the flute player in Pucho‘s orcherstra because he got mad skills, no doubt. Listen how he screams through the instrument, with the same technique used in the selection opening track.

Bilal - "Little Ones" (Georgia Anne Muldrow Remix)

By JR on 3:21 PM

Enter the futuristic Funk sound of Georgia Anne Muldrow as she lays down the groove for Bilal on the remix of "Little One". Georgia provides a swaying rhythm and heavy mood to carry the weight of Bilal's vocals with an arrangement which builds as the song progresses, emphasizing the emotions delivered in each bar. The intensity of guitar and synth instrumentation in contrast to the mellow vibe of her laid back Funk groove adds to the unique vibe of this remix. Georgia structures the sound against Bilal's performance to boost your adrenaline with exciting soloing combined with a calm rhythmic feel.

He attended Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, where he was invited to play piano with the jazz ensemble. This experience fueled a desire to further his development as a jazz pianist and led him to New York City where he received professional jazz training under the renowned Michael Cockran and Greg Murphy.

In 1996 Aaron was part of a musical tour to Jakarta, Indonesia with funk meister Dennis "Menace" Weeden. He has traveled as a producer/studio musician with the legendary house music dj Bert Bevans. "Electric Empire is comprised of Jason Heerah (drums), Aaron Mendoza (keys), Dennis Dowlut (guitar) and Simon Olsen (bass). They’re an independent-minded collection of talented musicians, songwriters and producers with Dennis, Aaron and Jason all taking lead vocals.

Fast becoming one of Australia’s top music exports, like many of their contemporaries, the group has taken the global route before hitting the headlines at home. And what an incredible journey it’s been.

In less than a year, the four-piece has achieved more than most others would manage in a lifetime. Electric Empire has toured the world, filling illustrious theatres and clubs, and playing some of the best-known festivals on the planet.

In 2011, Electric Empire delivered a string of shows at Britain’s famous Glastonbury Festival, they graced the stage of London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall (2012) and played to full houses in Japan and France. The band’s music has even taken them into Kazakhstan. Their self-funded and self-titled 2010 debut album has now sold more than 40,000 copies outside Australia – a remarkable achievement for a fully independent release.

Those experiences are shaping the music of Electric Empire. The group have cut a new EP, CHANGIN’, which will get a full-release in the Australian market in Oct 2012."

Refreshingly vibrant, eclectic and soulful, Aaron Abernathy aka "AB." shines as an emerging R&B musician, here to capture the emotions with the soulful sounds of "Prolougue Vol II". Traveling throughout the music scene AB has captivated audiences and music pioneers across the globe. Opening for such acts as Betty Wright, Dwele, Patti Labelle, Dougy Fresh, The Whispers, and Enchantment, AB is fresh and versatile.

When you grow it in a household where the record needle never collects dust, it's only right to dedicate your life to the art. Ab made up his mind to walk this musical path in his early years, developing a love for the piano and a nact for playing his favorite radio songs-- by ear.

Before you knew it, Ab was participating in the musical ministry at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church in Cleveland, OH. As the head musical coordinator for the Annual Easter Program, Ab re-energized the program through unique vocal and instrumental arrangements. His dedication to challenge himself and others in music was evident then, and served as the first sign for things to come.

Once Ab landed in Washington, D.C. to pursue a degree in Music, from Howard University, the focus to excel in the art was undeniable. Inspired by Sly and the Family Stone, Rufus and Chaka Khan, Shuggie Otis, L.T.D, The JB's, and the Ohio Players, Ab began to hone his eclectic sound and performance, which has been experienced by the DC metropolitan area for the past years.

Selling his demo on Howard University's campus generated a buzz. Due to the significant number of units sold, Ab gathered the interest of artists and labels on the East Coast. Demonstrating an array of talent, Ab's music intertwines powerful lyrics with jazz, blues, hip-hop, and soul thus, producing a new generation of extraordinary sound. Still in search of the right business marriage, Ab vows to keep the music pure, unique, entertaining, and uncompromising: the only way he knows it. Hence, Ab is a name we will hear often in the near future.

Enjoy two remixes of "It Ain't Hard To Tell" which each bring a different mood and type of rhythm to get your head nodding to the timeless flow of Nas. DJ CBR creates a perfect mashup of the a cappella with a rare Onyx instrumental which bumps with a thumping Jazz-based groove. This one sounds like an unreleased demo version which carries an early 90's feel of HIp Hop in the vein of Large Pro's original version of "It Ain't Hard To Tell".

Sir Squesh brings dark emotion of Hip Hop in his remix of "It Ain't Hard To Tell". This triumphant sound of violins, horns against a dark piano melody support and enhance Nas's images of self-definition to project the vision of a leader. Leave you brain stimulated with this new vision of Illmatic's lead single as Squesh transforms dark Soul samples into the musical backdrop for one of QB's greatest MCs.

Tony Allen Rhythms Revisited by AfroBeat Makers

"A reworked version of rhythms from Tony Allen – put together by a trio of European percussionist/producers with a very sharp sound! The core energy of Allen is definitely heard throughout – that style of being funky, yet offbeat too – which Tony's definitely explored even more strongly in recent years.

Yet the contributions of the trio also really focus the groove too – almost creating tracks that are tighter and more rhythm heavy than before – without as much instrumental interplay over the top, almost as if they're break tracks, but from an Afro Funk perspective! Titles include "Demon Nights", "Deeper", "Africa Walk", "Mister Cool T", "After Hours Jump", "Long Ride", "African Heat", "Bag Of Breaks", and "Ikeja Roads"." - Review by Dusty Groove

"Alta Tensione 3 am", The Cinematic Sound of Alex Puddu

Composer Alex Puddu sets a mysterious vibe with the slow-grooving cinematic Funk of "Alta Tensione 3 am". This instrumental composition builds with intensity in the form of 70's Library-style music beginning with the introduction of a bass groove which progresses into a rise of synths, Rhodes keys, organ and horn. Once all is said and done, Alex demonstrates his ability to take control of the emotions as an arranger with music to take your mind on a trip.
