Astronote - We Don't Change ft. 4 Peace (Edo. G, Wyatt Jackson, Twice Thou & DQuest)

From "Weapon Of The Future SINGLES Pt.2" by Astronote, who shows his versatility of sound on this one. "We Don't Change" reminds me of a West Coast type of sound but still unique to Astronote's dark Jazz fusion style of production.

With all his accomplishments in Hip Hop, on "BarBury N Beats Vol. 1" Showbiz proves he is still competitive as a producer in an era of new producers influenced by the sound of D.I.T.C.

Video: Kool G Rap & Biz On Stage In 1990 (Royalty, Riches & Respect Now In Stores)

Classic early 90's Hip Hop vibe throughout this clip. From the haircuts, gear and the En Vogue instrumental playing in the background as G Rap & Biz kick freestyles, the feeling of 1990 is undeniable. I'm pretty sure this was before Wanted: Dead Or Alive dropped, G Rap kicks a rhyme from the album, one of which I think are some of his sickest 'til this day.

Riches Royalty Respect

I pulled this classic video out to celebrate Kool G Rap's latest album, "Royalty, Riches & Respect" out now on Fat Beats Records.

Listen to the snippets here at Amazon and Undergroundhiphop.com, production by Alchemist, Blastah Beatz, DJ Supa Dave, Gordon H.U.M.P. Humphrey, Infamous, Leaf Dog, Level 13, Marley Marl, Simply Smashin, and The Insurgency.

Soul 45s: "Black Feeling Volume 2" Sampler By Freestyle Records Brings Covers Of Shaft In Africa & Burning Spear

The sequel to "Black Feeling" the first compilation released on Freestyle Records of funk/soul covers by various bands directed by Australian funk musician DJ Lance Ferguson is almost here, Black Feeling 2! Freestyle Records is releasing a 45 sampler from the upcoming compilation which includes a cover of Burning Spear, originally by Richard Evans (The Soulful Strings/Cadet Records) and on the b-side is a cover of Johnny Pate's blaxploitation classic Shaft In Africa. Get up on this project if you crave contemporary Soul musicians covering classics you love!

Black Feeling Volume Two - Sampler 45
(7"/Digital) Freestyle Records FSR7068, 2011-06-06

Tracklisting :
A1. The Poly-Tones - Burning Spear 4.31
B1. The Mighty Show-Stoppers - Shaft In Africa 4.06

Here are a couple tunes from the original Black Feeling in the above video and it's original press release below:

"Back in September 2007, Freestyle Records released Black Feeling an album project brought to life by Australian musical supremo Lance Ferguson (The Bamboos, Cookin' On 3 Burners, Lanu).

Each track was presented under a pseudonym to give the impression of an album you would find whilst digging in a Caribbean record shop or American thrift store. As a collection of reworked classics, the album set dance floors alight across the world, indeed, the single Hippy Skippy Moon Strut by The Mighty Show-Stoppers became a huge selling 12 inch, and also notched up well over 350,000 individual viewings on You Tube to date!

Now in 2011, Freestyle Records is pleased as punch to be releasing this teaser 45 single that features 2 cuts from the forthcoming follow up album Black Feeling: Volume Two (FSRCD/LP090) and what total corkers they are too!

The A side is Lance & Co's fantastic reworking of the anthemic Burning Spear under the moniker of The Poly-Tones, an intense and driving piece of soulful funk, and what could possibly equal that for the flip side? The Mighty Show-Stoppers giving Johnnie Pate's blaxploitation soundtrack classic Shaft In Africa such a convincing and wonderful re-working, you will think you are back in time, on the film set whilst Richard Roundtree (that's John Shaft to you sucker!) kicks some serious ass!"

Jelani Merges Fine Art With Street Culture On "Japanese Architecture"

Gotta love an MC who appreciates art in the historical sense and is willing to incorporate that type of ideology into Hip Hop. In "Japanese Architecture", Jelani doesn't speak on this culture of art in the literal sense, instead he uses his creativity to inspire you to create something monumental and memorable like the great structures, statues and clothing of Japan with what you have in your own world. Respect the architect, as Jelani begins to build.

JeanYus Shows "No Mercy" Over A Pharoahe Monch Instrumental

I bet you never thought you'd hear another MC kill it on this menacing instrumental since Pharoahe and M.O.P. created their monster of a song out of it on "Internal Affairs"! Now the wait is over, as JeanYus from Tha IntaVention/Black Table Committee/The Collective comes out blazing on Pharaoh's “No Mercy" instrumental for a very competitive and unforgettable mic performance in 2011.

Jeanyus’ new project The Declaration 2 will be dropping in the near future, be prepared for new music from Tha IntaVention camp in the coming week.

Tanya Morgan, Che Grand, King Mez, & Skyzoo “Without Hands”

Aggressive posse cut right here, you're looking at the future of Hip Hop artists who are dedicated and original to their craft. Tanya Morgan, Che Grand, King Mez and Skyzoo step from the streets right into the booth to do their thing on this impromptu collaboration “Without Hands”.

The story behind this song as told by Von Pea is that the group happened to meet up on a street in Austin one day and were lured onto the tour bus you see in this video to record the song. Interesting isn't it! They all seem like they wouldn't mind creating music whenever and wherever using the most limited of resources, and that's one of the greatest things to admire about a Hip Hop artist.

"Cream & Cookies" Instrumental LP Produced by Shuko & F of Audiotreats Now On iTunes

"Cream & Cookies" Instrumentals by Shuko & F of Audiotreats is definitely a treat for the eardrum. The two German producers dig into their wide range of musical influences to present a 13 track collection of instrumentals which take influence and push the art of classic 90's jazzy, boom-bap sound founded by Pete Rock, Dilla, Spinna and others.

If you are familiar with Shuko and F's impressive production catalog, this is definitely a conscious step into presenting a specific sound that they love, each utilize a wide range of moods and styles in working with a variety of artists. It is great to hear produces who have that Jazz/Hip Hop essence within them and are willing to further the art of this classic sound.

Sample Of The Day: Jimmy McGriff vs. JR & PH7

These are 2 seriously funky pieces of music. On "Persuasion" (Feat. Olivier Day Soul & Sean Price) German production duo JR&PH7 use their knack for soulful sample-based production to make a Hip Hop banger out of the rhythm section from Jazz organist Jimmy McGriff's 1970 song "Bird Wave". The energy on both songs is great and as sample architects, JR&PH7 make you realize how well orchestrated the horn section of McGriff's "Bird Wave" is in creating a contemporary interpretation on the Jazz organists' classic.

Audio: K-Def 1995 Breaks & Samples Mix feat. Marley Marl & Larry-O

By JR on 7:11 PM

In this 1995 episode of Pirate Radio, K-Def is on the wheels cutting breaks and samples used in Hip Hop songs you are probably very familiar with spanning Jazz, Soul, Funk and Rock genres of the 70's. In a period where commercial radio stations threatened to remove authentic representation of Hip Hop like this off the air, K-Def, Marley Marl and Pete Rock stood their ground with quality Hip Hop representation on this show.

This mix provides a good look into the skills of a DJ on FM radio in the classic sense of Hip Hop. In this mix K-Def commands his collection of vinyl for your listening pleasure. Check for a surprise freestyle appearance by K's cousin during the end of the show.

Download Elaquent Dutch Canadian

This instrumental by Elaquent has a nice, laid-back kinda vibe with nice layering and progression, he has a unique way of creating progression through synths and samples against head-nodding drum grooves. It is one of my favorites off his instrumental project "Oldies", available for download here.

"The Midnight After" takes a few steps forward from "Oldies"by showing even more of Elaquent's imagination as a producer for a collection of instrumentals which carry a sound of new wave, Jazz-influenced Hip Hop fusion with creative use of effects and original sound selection.

These two brothers are examples of how to grow gradually with Hip Hop, a value which I think is especially important in this current digital age where fast consumption of music and media is encouraged. J Rawls & Sadat X explain exactly how they combined to record the first single "Face It" off Rawls' album "The Hip Hop Affect" a song which expresses many positive values of life. They then give a brief idea of how Hip Hop has provided a wealth of opportunities which aren't necessarily financial, but have more to do with gaining memorable experiences of life.

Ketchphraze featuring Trick Trick & Elzhi -" My Detroit" (prod. by Black Milk)

This one caught me off guard with it's dark and threatening sound, I usually identify Detroit with soulful sounds but this is sorta scary in comparison. Nevertheless each MC rips it on "My Detroit", a heavy hard-hitting ode to The D led by Ketchphraze, one third of the acclaimed group Street Justice.

Dollar Bin Vol. 3 Mix by Dj Puerto-Roc: Spanish Samples For Your Production Needs

Spanish music carries an interesting variety of dark, sinister sound which is perfect for Hip Hop, a genre of music which remains somewhat under-recognized for it's availability of samples. New Jersey's DJ Puerto Roc digs into the crates for a selection of dark, cinematic breaks and intro parts to bring sounds that could rival the emotion of many Library music and foreign cinema composers.

SlopFunkDust Presents: Beat Fanatic Vol. 1 - Smokers Choice

Beat Society alumni unite in a collaborative themed effort on production which is nothing less than head nodding. On the beats is SlopFunkDust, Khrysis, !llmind, Nicolay, J Bizness, Illastrate and DJ Rhettmatic for the instrumental series "Beat Fanatic Vol. 1 - Smokers Choice." The scope of this project revolves around the herbals of course, as each producers goes round for round on co-production with SlopFunk to bring bangers in between funny marijuana-themed skits.

From SlopFunkDust:
"Marijuana and hip-hop have been in cahoots since day one. For every Cypress Hill and Snoop Dogg, there are countless other music-making stoners promoting the ganja; they just happen to fly under the radar. A seriously funky and perpetually baked producer out of Florida, Slopfunkdust has been doing his thing for many years. Heavily involved with the Beat Fanatics and Beat Society, he's also concocted countless freaky instrumentals for a wide array of artists. On the aptly titled Smoker's Choice, he enlists the help of various talented co-producers, including KHRYSIS, Rhettmatic, Nicolay, and Illmind, to assist him with his bud-themed tracks. Every selection is titled after a designer strain of weed: "Sour Diesel," "AK-47," "Granddaddy Purp," etc., and they all live up to their names, with no shortage of tripped-out loops, mid-tempo drums, and bizarro samples. "Trainwreck" adds a head-nodding beat to the infamous 911 call from a Michigan cop who ate pot brownies and believed himself dead."

Mark de Clive-Lowe Covers Gene Harris on "Leaving This Planet EP"

An excellent cover of Gene Harris' 1975 Jazz fusion gem 'Koko + Lee Roe' sets the stage for what is only the tip of the iceberg for Mark de Clive-Lowe's "Leaving This Planet EP", a pre-cursor to his full length album "Renegades" dropping in summer of 2011. Sit back and enjoy Leaving This Planet for a variety of intoxicating grooves in beautiful, uptempo soulful house, downtempo ballads and contemporary Jazz fusion.

Sample Of The Day: Zulema vs. !llmind on Behind The Curtain

Witness the inspiration !llmind took from female soul musician Zulema and her 1975 cover of "I Wanna Be Where You Are" (originally written by Leon Ware) to produce the instrumental "Wannabee" using virtual instrument sounds composed from scratch. Pretty interesting isn't it? This is one instance of a Hip Hop producer digging for deeper influences in creating innovative music.

"Slide off kid, and let a grown man finesse it!"

The statement of Canadian Hip Hop duo Die-Rek ft. DJ Versatile sums up how I feel about Hip Hop to today to a certain degree. I think it's up to the older generation to catch wreck and hand down tradition according to the history of the culture, which Die-Rek ft. DJ Versatile do on this song. "Grown Man Biz" hits hard from the second it drops with a thumping drum break, leading you into a standout performance by Die-Rek on the mic and DJ Versatile on the wheels.

You've got a nice balance of veteran and emerging talent here in a competitive display of skills in the future of underground lyricism. The combination of Astronote production and King Magnetic's rhyme ability continues to impress, look out for more work of this duo in the future.

Booker T. & The MG's and The Roots - The Road From Memphis Snippets

The classic Memphis Soul sound of Booker T & The MGs is presented in it's fullest on "The Road From Memphis",  a 2011 release from the legendary Stax recording artists. Booker T. shows his unique ability on the organ once again, proving his role as a pioneer and important contributor in the history of of Soul music. Special guests assist Booker T & The MGs' such as The Roots and Sharon Jones, who bring a touch of modern musical influence to their classic sound of southern Memphis Soul.

From Amazon:

"The Road from Memphis starts with a young Booker T. Jones hauling his stack of newspapers to Phineas Newborn's front yard where, while folding them for his after-school delivery route, he could listen to the jazz great practice piano. It ends with Booker and The Roots roaring through a set of both timeless and contemporary originals (and propulsive covers of Gnarls Barkley s "Crazy" and Lauren Hill's "Everything Is Everything").

Along for the ride are vocalists Matt Berninger of the National, Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket, Sharon Jones, Lou Reed, and Booker himself, telling the story of how the funk/soul sound that Booker helped invent spiraled out from Memphis, touching The Roots' hometown of Philadelphia, New York (where engineer Gabe Roth has been recreating classic soul sonics for everyone from Sharon Jones to Amy Winehouse), and Detroit. Detroit as in Dennis Coffey, legendary Motown session guitarist who introduced driving rock funk rhythm to hits like "Cloud Nine" and "Ball of Confusion" by the Temptations, and brings his Detroit grit to these tracks.

The Road from Memphis is classic Memphis soul, and classic Booker in the tradition of "Green Onions", but beyond that it is the story of a sound, and how Booker, working with the inheritors of his sound, is keeping a tradition alive."

Stu Bangas & Vanderslice Play Snippets & Original Samples From "Blaq Poet Society"

This sounds like the hardest album to emerge from New York City in a while, the sounds are intense and well balanced in it's production and lyricism as 2 emerging beatsmiths are paired with the ruff voice of a QB veteran. The 2 chief producers of Blaq Poet Society Stu Bangas and Vanderslice give an unheard-of album preview session by playing the original sample they used, then the finished Blaq Poet track. This project sounds exciting.
