"The formula was simple: marry bubblegum and soul to the absolute sincerity of an enthusiastic child, cross your fingers and pray for airplay. But while the youthful sums of that formula may have grown up and walked away from their illusions of stardom, their permanent records remain. A decade removed from our acclaimed Home Schooled compilation comes a fresh batch of talent show titans. With enterprising parents, neighbors, and teachers turning play dates into recording dates, groups like Magical Connection, Little Man and the Inquires, and Five Ounces of Soul emulated the Jacksons, who'd made grade-school stardom appear easy as ABC. Afterschool Special: The 123s Of Kid Soul contains 19 tiny tunes ranging from bilingual D.A.R.E. anthem, to James Brown bio, to young love and life beyond the playground."- Numero Group

"Kashif’s contribution to R&B is without compare. As a teen, he rose to prominence in early 80s NYC as an in demand producer and solo artist. His hybridizing of traditional live band arrangements w/ synthesizers and drum machines played an integral role in developing the sound of Whitney Houston, Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King and many others. He has been regarded by some as the architect of the boogie sound. Tune in for the 100th episode of the show featuring an in depth interview with Kashif!!!" - Night School

"Evelyn “Champagne” King ranks right up there with Donna Summer and Patti LaBelle at the top of the disco diva pantheon, but there has never been a domestically released collection to do her glittering career justice. Which is a real “shame”…but The Complete RCA Hits and More! not only offers, like the title says, all 24 hits she scored on the R&B and Pop charts for the RCA label, but also presents them in the 12”, alternate mix, and remix versions that really got the dance floor shaking back in the day! So you get the 12” mixes of big hits like “Shame,” “I Don’t Know If It’s Right,” “I’m in Love,” and “Love Come Down,” the “Dance Mix” of “Your Personal Touch,” remixes of “High Horse” and “Shake Down,” and so on. Soul expert David Nathan contributes liner notes with exclusive quotes from Evelyn, and we’ve added photos from the RCA vaults and 12” single and album art. "Much like the infamous weather phenomenon the song is named after, MAELSTROM swirls and surges; drenching the listener in psych feedback while pulling downward, ever downward, into a sonic abyss. The bass provides the current, a pulse that pushes through the waves of feedback before the crashing storm of horns furiously hammers the listener. There is nothing pretty here, nothing safe; this is the Budos unhinged. They’re pushing their audience into uncharted waters and plotted a course into the eye of an electric storm.
The guitar’s hypnotic fuzz-laden intro builds to a peak before dropping the weight of the full Budos sound upon the listener. Horns slash and dive, the drums thunder downhill, the organ wails like winter wind while the combination of bass and guitar rumble and soar around you. This is the Avalanche of sound; the wrath of The Budos delivered through a combination of driving power and snarling menace. All before it Is crushed beneath the AVALANCHE." - Daptone Records

"Continuing its coverage and commemoration of the 1992 civil unrest, West Coast rappers and music veterans discussed the influence of gangsta rap on the 1992 civil unrest Wednesday, April 25 on KJLH-FM’s Front Page show. Show participants included Compton rapper DJ Quik, Blood & Crips Bangin on Wax album legend Big Wy, Grammy-nominated rapper and actress Yo-Yo, Above the Law’s Cold 187um aka Big Hutch, West Coast and Los Angeles hip-hop legend Medusa, and West Coast music historian Gregory Everett.
Pioneered in the mid-1980s by rappers such as Schoolly D and Ice-T, gangsta rap was popularized in the later part of the 1980s by groups like N.W.A. After the national attention that Ice-T and N.W.A attracted in the late 1980s and early 1990s, gangsta rap became the most commercially lucrative subgenre of hip-hop. The subject matter inherent in gangsta rap has caused a great deal of controversy. Criticism has come from both left wing and right wing commentators, and religious leaders, who have accused the genre of promoting crime, violence, profanity, racism, street gangs, drive-bys, vandalism, thievery, drug dealing, alcohol abuse, substance abuse and materialism.
Hosted by Dominique DiPrima, the Front Page is Los Angeles’ only daily talk radio show focused on African-American issues. The show can be heard on air in Los Angeles from 4:30AM until 6AM at 102.3 FM, online at www.kjlhradio.com, and downloaded later on iTunes after the broadcast. Today’s show was produced by veteran radio news journalist and producer Jasmyne Cannick."

"Music is unquestionably an essential form of connection in all of our lives. It's a universal language and a way to process the world around us. For me, it's been a constant outlet, passion, and extension of who I am, and it's not always easy to share such a big part of yourself. But for the first time in a few years, I'm feeling ready to give back and offer what I love in hopes that others will be able to relate to it too.
Although it's been awhile since I've created a record, I have been spending a lot of time immersing myself in music through teaching, practicing, writing and playing. This campaign and resulting album will give me the opportunity to rededicate myself to my own music as a performer, and pursue what makes me happiest. Having a new album to promote will open a lot of doors for me to play shows as well as to reconnect with and grow my audience." - Nicole Berke

"Today, Obnoxious retains its strange, otherworldly appeal – A firm favourite amongst a small circle of deep diggers including Madlib, Gilles Peterson, Floating Points and DJ Nuts. Jose Mauro’s mournful and melancholic vocals create a dark, brooding atmosphere that stands in contrast to the usual joyfulness and high-spirited rhythm of the more prominent Brazilian music of the era. Despite this air of foreboding, Mauro’s confident baritones, chord patterns and sumptuous arrangements have the ability to induce in the listener in an almost trance-like state of ecstasy. Mauro’s long hidden masterpiece, a complex and uniquely stunning work is being offered the chance to be heard by the wider audience it has always deserved. A second Jose Mauro release, A Viagem Des Horas, compiling more incredible tracks unreleased in Mauro’s lifetime, will follow, alongside other unreleased jewels from the Quartin catalogue, from the likes of Piri and Victor Assis Brasil…" - Far Out Recordings

"Alex Puddu has done it again!
This is the third instalment of the soundtrack composed by our hero for the third chapter of the DVD series The Golden Age of Danish Pornography 1970-1974. The project began in 2011 with the release of a collection of twelve 8mm vintage hardcore short movies from the early '70s directed by the pioneer of Danish porn cinema Freddy Weiss. A second DVD published by Jan Schmidt's Pink Flamingo Entertainment followed in 2014. The third DVD has never been produced, and never will be... So, what's the deal with this soundtrack?
Some of the tracks Alex was working on were almost completed; once they were done, the addition of some outtakes originally thought for the first two albums brought us to this release. Black Orgasm (until now published on 7 only), Sex Bar, XXX Action and Feeling Saxy previously appeared only as singles or CD bonus tracks and are now here pressed on vinyl!

"Money Chicha is an Austin, Texas based group featuring members of the Grammy-award winning Latin orchestra Grupo Fantasma and its offshoot funk outfit Brownout which performs a fuzzed-out, reverb-drenched and percussion-heavy style of music inspired by the sounds of Peru and Colombia in the 60s and 70s. This style of music, sometimes called “chicha” music, is known for its infectious Latin beat, its psychedelic, surf guitar pyrotechnics and its melodies influenced by the indigenous culture of the Andes mountains. The group’s sound is derived from the exhilarating syncopations of congas, cowbell and timbales, the gritty tones of combo organs and vintage synthesizers, effects-laden guitar melodies, insistent basslines and a healthy dose of trippy effects.

When you hear the name Chopped Herring in the context of Hip Hop, you can always expect nostalgia in the form of beats which display the signature Neck-snapping sample-driven sound of the early 90's. This revival boom-Bap label unites with producer B.B.Z. Darney for a ride of jazzy instrumentals which is the sonic foundation for what the Mic Theory crew of Hex One and Epidemic use to blaze mics in 2016 and beyond.
With a clever use of type and black & white photography, graphic designer Fred McClelland personifies Hip Hop like never before. This project brings light to how important the letter is to MCs throughout the culture's history as legendary artists become as bold as Hip Hop's attitude.
"This was a small project that was created for fun to explore masking and simple techniques. I have seen many different variations of the ABC's over the years but I never have I really seen any that showcased a list of people within a specific subject matter.
I have always been mezmurized by a talented lyricist that doesnt have to neccessarily use the crutch of profanity to make his rhymes flow smoothly. At first I thought that I could come up with individuals that played an important role in the growth of the Hip-Hop community, but settling on who will be representing each letter turned out to be a huge task.
Some of you may not recognize a few of the faces but each one has made a large impact on this music genre, whether it is negative or positive.
That being said I hope you enjoy this project." - Fred McClelland
