Sample Of The Day: Blue Mitchell vs. Large Pro

In 2012, The Large Professor shows his magic touch of adding boom-bap Hip Hop flavor to decorate and transform the sound of Jazz music. This time the great Queens producer draws from an upbeat tune by Blue Mitchell to create his song "Key To The City" featuring Rob Swift of The X-Ecutioners. Blue Mitchell's song "Ojos De Rojo" flows smoothly with a beautiful Latin Jazz vibe, featuring dense rhythms and spacey synths combined with an outstanding horn section. Large picks out key parts of the song to bring about just the right vibe, adding dope lyrics and scratching for a banger which brings back the feeling of uptempo Golden Era Hip Hop.

Showing some props to K-Def and Seven Shawn for their collaborative work in presenting a number of short but memorable tracks on Soundcloud during the year of 2012. The duo evoke a nice revival sound of the 90's which seems to fill a void in Hip Hop's current sound while remaining competitive with what's out there based of showing pure skill.

Since their inception on wax in the early 90's with the group World Renown, K has blessed Shawn and his partner with heat on the boards for Hip Hop which is insightful, original and entertaining. Now in 2912 both are refined skillfully and offer funky sounds of Hip Hop you're not likely to hear anywhere else.

Enjoy a collection of K-Def and Seven Shawn's work as they return to form as collaborators and stay tuned to hopefully more work from the long-time duo.

Video: Johnny Gill - 1991 Interview With MTV Japan For Self Titled LP

Although you won't truly know the power of Johnny's music until you sit and absorb his studio recordings in full, this VHS rip of his interview with MTV Japan in 1990 serves as an introduction into Johnny's influential presence as one of R&B/New Jack Swing's leading talents.

For his 1990 self-titled LP on Motown Records, the New Edition member struck the music scene with energetic songs that can rock a dance floor 'til this day such as "Rub You The Right Way" and "Fairweather Friend", sounds which virtually helped define the sound of New Jack Swing. His love ballads remain as classics while providing a groove like none other through outstanding vocal talent paired with greats of production, from the La & Babyface-written "My, My, My" to the incredibly smooth "Lady Dujour" written and produced by Jam & Lewis. The sound of music has since changed, but one things for certain is Johnny's aura on recordings is one in a million as one of R&B's most timeless voices.

Enjoy this feature interview for Johnny's 1990 album as an in-depth look at one of the greatest talents of R&B to emerge from the background of Gospel singing, Motown Records and the wing of legendary production teams La & Babyface and Flyte Time. Hear Johnny perform live plus speak about each song on the album with additional interviews with Jam & Lewis as they speak on working with the young superstar.

Jay-Z - "Can't Knock The Hustle" (Marley Marl Remix feat. Tragedy Khadafi)

On a 1996 episode of Future Flavaz, Marley Marl and K-Def premier an unreleased remix of Jay-Z's "Can't Knock The Hustle". This version sounds more understated and rugged than the original as Marley keeps it simple yet funky. The House Of Hits super producer flips a Jazz loop some might remember used by his protege K-Def on the Real Live album. I left the song in between some of the uncut audio from this episode so you can hear Marley's excitement in speaking with K and others in the studio about some of the other great Hip Hop records out at the time. A nice unreleased gem from the Marley files and some 90's nostalgia from the New York airwaves for your listening enjoyment.

Groove Stu provide a rich palette of R&B sound as a band which draws from classic musical influences and talent which is evident throughout their addictive and soul-drenched grooves. For those who long for the element of R&B which features live instrumentation matched with outstanding vocal arrangements and passionate songwriting as a blend of Neo-Soul, Groove Stu bring treats for your ear on "Artofficial Substance" with an exciting modern sound to get you moving. Free your mind and reflect on love of life with the sound of this talented band.

Bio:

Channeling influences such as The Isley Brothers, Earth Wind and Fire, Prince, J Dilla and Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, Groove Stu brings back the art of real vocals and live instrumentation. A self contained group of writers, producers, and performers, Groove Stu has been sharing their gift of music on stages throughout the world since 1999.

In 2003, the band released it's first album, Authentic 4.10 Sessions, independently to critical acclaim. Not content to play it safe, the band chose to showcase it's versatility by making an album that crossed several genres including hip hop, soul, jazz, and reggae. With the completion of the album, GS sought out to promote the product by doing what they do best. Performing live. GS has shared stages with such acts as Frankie Beverly and Maze, Boyz II Men, Erykah Badu, Mint Condition, Jeffrey Osborne, Raheem DeVaughn and Kindred the Family Soul to name a few. In 2006 they released their live concert DVD, Live and Direct From Baltimore.

GS took some time away from performing to create their brand new album Still Here, scheduled to release in Summer 2011. The album contains a wealth of material drawn from the personal life experiences of each member, and includes an appearance by Grammy award winning singer/songwriter Gordon Chambers. Recognizing a lack of substance in today's music, GS felt compelled to write lyrics of self reflection and love meant to inspire and motivate. Whether live or on record, Groove Stu continues in the tradition of legendary bands of the past who's music allowed you to get your groove on but also delivered a message in the process.
