To my ghetto residents, I know you can relate like me to Rae's depiction of day-to-day living in this behind the scenes tour. The Wu has done a great job in bringing you into the depths of the inner city through their music, it looks like he's taking it further with his latest video from "Shaolin vs. Wu Tang
On "Acknowledgement" Soul Khan definitely comes through with an outstanding flow backed by the raw production from his Brown Bag All Stars crew, hearing his sound takes me back to the feeling of the traditional New YOrk independent sound made by Hip Hop addicts. Soul Khan's "Acknowledgement" EP is produced entirely by Brown Bag AllStar, DeeJay Element.

Here are the visuals for AWAR's single from the forthcoming "Things Of That Nature" EP (Sponsored by DJBooth.net). I always thought the song itself was well executed enough to visualize without an official video, so this is a treat.
Jelani's inspirational messages on "Clarity" are here to encourage you to look at what is before you in life with great positivity and optimism. He's got a unique skill of crafting songs which touch upon the truth and help us with daily obstacles, but the root of it is his positive spirit to accomplish greatness in the face of reality.

Isidore (aka Izzy Ice) and DJ Majesty perform some verses for you live and direct from a New York City sidewalk just before the release of their debut album Contemporary Jeep Music. Da King & I are a rare duo who had an abundance of talent in the stash waiting to release to the Hip Hop world, displaying an amazing level of skill in an impromptu performance from the streets.
Within only a few minutes these guys show you the special knack they had for complex and clever metaphors plus alot of humor and personality coming from the late 80's classic tradition of MCing. Add this on to your experience of Contemporary Jeep Music and one of many great moment from the great year of 1992.
Chace Infinite & DJ Khalil have been dropping banger after next leading up to this project so if you're like me I'm sure you're anticipation of their "Trials Of The Blackhearted EP" is high as a good package of Hip Hop that resonates in your consciousness. Hit the DL link below to enjoy this offering from one of the West Coast's finest.
Glad to see a video for this song, it is well deserved as Virtuoso brings great visual depth in his writing as a talent who is here to bring us new ideas in conceptual Hip Hop songs.
From Big Bang Records:
"Big Bang Records presents the long awaited video for the fan favorite track "Statue" off of Snowgoons latest album Kraftwerk (Goon MuSick). "Statue" is a monstrous collaboration that links musical mastermind Sicknature from Denmark and Boston lyrical legend Virtuoso. Virtuoso tears this track into tiny pieces with his trademark verbal acrobatics over a rock solid boom-bap backdrop. This track is one of the best selling songs in Snowgoons and Virtuoso's respective careers and has been setting fire to speakers across the globe. The video was directed and edited by Marsay Seymour (20/20 Vizin) and Virtuoso himself. This is just a taste of the fire to come as Big Virt and Snowgoons are in the process of making an entire album together to be released in early 2012."
Can't believe I missed this one, this was right in my backyard! On April 20th 2011, WEST NYC played host to The God MC, RAKIM. The R performed at WEST NYC to launch a collaborative t shirt, WEST NYC x MILKCRATE x RAKIM.

Two great minds meet at The World Famous Wake Up Show to speak about music, consciousness, self-expression and Hip Hop in 2001 during a period where each were on the brink off dropping some serious heat for our eardrums. If you remember this period, it was just before Mos Def & Kweli were about to drop their debut album on Rawkus and RZA already had his 2nd solo LP out "Digital Bullet". Even for those of us who know the Blackstar and Bobby Digital albums from front to back, it is interesting to hear the two artists analyze and compliment each others direction of music making.
Part 2 of this episode features a freestyle session with RZA's groups The Black Knights, Northstar, and the West Coast's E-Rule.
O.C. & Big L speaks with Phat Phillie in Croatia during the release of "Jewelz" with performance footage shown in between. About 45 minutues long.

This special episode of The Deadly Dragon Sound System show goes outside it's normal boundaries of Reggae programming, with crate diggers Pete Rock, DJ Muro and Magachin blessing the wheels of steel with a set of multi-genre deep breaks, live on East Village Radio. Once you start listening, the show quickly becomes exciting once the first DJ starts spinning.
This radio show is a nice change of tune, especially if you can relate to feeling of not hearing enough of the deep sounds of reggae music associated with Hip Hop names in awhile. Personally, I miss hearing the sounds of Reggae as a person of West-Indian heritage and product of 90's Hip Hop where the two genres of music were more at a crossroads.
From Deadly Dragon Sound System:
"Hailing out of Japan, Magachin has built a solid sound system based on dubplates and love of Jamaican culture. He will be sure to bring some classic dancehall or wicked lovers tunes. Also from Japan, DJ Muro has of course built a name producing and putting out hip hop, but also is very much into finding deep reggae and reggae breaks, as he showcased the last time he was on the show. That takes us to our third guest, the legendary hip hop producer Pete Rock. Recognized as one the most respected hip hop producers in the game, you can't have been into hip hop in the 90s without knowing something about reggae. We don't know if he and Muro are bringing wax or digital, and we don't know if they are playing reggae or not. But they are definitely part of the Deadly Dragon Massive and aesthetic so it should be a great show, I am sure you are excited as we are."
This is something to behold for the true Hip Hop fan: the socially-conscious spirit of The Guru living through Masta Ace in a live performance of his 1991 classic "Who's Gonna Take The Weight", with the CSC Funk Band and Mista Sinista on the wheels. This performance shows Fat Beats is doing a job to keep the community element of Hip Hop alive with their monthly New York pop-up shops which feature classic and emerging artists, hopefully you'll make it out to the next one!
Big thanks to toneriggz for the footage

This sounds like one of their best lineups yet, I always look forward to CW's guest spotlights of respected artists who voice their opinions to a series of well-conducted interviews. Enjoy!
Gotta love an MC like Torae who comes through to inspire us all with his fearless and focused vision of life through music. Australian producer Flip provides a nice remix to the 4th single release off JR&PH7's "The Update", a track which parallels the style of JR&PH7' soulful, drum-heavy production sound.
"Do It For You" the Flip Remix and JR&PH7
When I think about great sounding, funky Jazz fusion, guitarist Larry Coryell definitely comes to mind. The 'Godfather of Fusion is back to join forces with The Wide Hive Players for 13 electrifying new tracks. As an example of Coryell's timeless quality of music, here is "Honey Dijon". As you may tell from the sound, his knack for funky Jazz still remains and has taken on a new tone in collaborating with the Wide Hive Players.
"Honey Dijon" is the lead single from the new album entitled "Larry Coryell With the Wide Hive Players", now available from Wide Hive Records at Amazon.com
From Giant Step:
"Well-known for his driving tone and intricate flurries; Coryell delivers amazing and intense performances atop solid and expansive grooves established by The Wide Hive Players. The Players, now consisting of the enormously talented rhythm section of bassist Matt Montgomery (Calvin Keys and Variable Unit) and Thomas McCree (Lyrics Born's drummer), horn players Mike Rinta (Sly Stone, Santana), Doug Rowan (Jazz Mafia) and pianist Adam Shulman, all contribute to create a cohesive alive sound, reminiscent of Coryell's popular Offerings or Eleventh House era. Primarily Jazz-Funk, the album also glows with overtones of soul, blues, has a definitive rock undercurrent. Overall the record is timeless and current; both reflective of past craftsmanship while remaining progressive and original."
Beats: M-Phazes "Shine Bright" featuring Damian Smith on keys

M-Phazes brings stunning sounds in his collaboration with keyboardist Damian Smith, showing his progression as a producer. "Shine Bright" is an outstanding display in the union of Hip Hop and live music production, this instrumental shines with a mix of soothing chords, deep bass, samples and thumping drums. This is a fine balance of sound to have your head nodding but also marvel at musical elements you're not used to hearing in traditional Hip Hop at the same time.
More Al Green Flips: "Songs" by Kaimbr & Kev Brown from The Alexander Green Project
By JR on 4:49 PM

This definitely had my head nodding. "Songs" is from The Alexander Green Project by Kaimbr & Kev Brown. It's cool to hear a fresh take by Kev Brown on an Al Green sample which has been flipped a number of times before, the additional bass and chopping makes it stand out and the lyrical performance by Kaimbr is one of the best I've heard this year.
Words from ReDefinition Records:
"I’ll spare you the typical “label / promo guy” hype this time… I’ll just say that I think this is a great song, and that Kaimbr and Kev Brown make for a great combo and that their music is that its something that regular, everyday folk such as ourselves can easily relate to. On The Combination (another song from the LP), when I heard Kaimbr say “Damn, I’m just glad I ain’t laid off,” that line hit home because a few months ago, like many others, I was laid off from my dayjob (for the record, this is John, not Damu - Damu’s dayjob is much more stable than where I was working).
As for the beats … Kev really nailed that classic Rza sound throughout this LP, which is something he intended to accomplish when producing it. There’s a reason why guys like Jazzy Jeff, De La Soul and Busta Rhymes call on Kev when they need beats; he simply knows what he’s doing."
Limited Edition GREEN VINYL LP includes a bonus 7” featuring a remix by Damu.
This is a musical experience you have to witness for yourself to truly understand, I can imagine a scene of feel good vibes and enjoyment from listening to the audio. Hearing this Foreign Exchange
It's always interesting to hear someone speak on Hip Hop who is from the era of watching Afrika Bambaataa and Malcom McLauren spin, and who practiced more than a few of Hip Hop's elements besides DJ'ing such as breaking and graf. DJ Rhettmatic of The World Famous Beat Junkies gets right down to explaining his place as a practitioner the core elements of Hip Hop based on applied knowledge of tradition to become one of the most renowned DJs/producers from L.A. California.
If you follow Rhettmatc as a producer he has his hands in a number of interesting new projects with artists like 14 KT, Buff 1, Ras Kass, Mayer Hawthorne and more, which he speaks on in this interview.
The sampler sounds very promising showing Ed. O.G. only gets better with time with more and more jewels of life experience to provide us as a talented lyricist. He is back with another addition to his impressive classic discography called “A Face in the Crowd”. The new album features M1 from Dead Prez, Slaine and Jaysaun of Special Teamz with production contributions from Dj Premier and Statik Selektah and more. Here is the tracklist below:

Sample Of The Day: Ernest Van Treose vs. Joell Ortiz, Jadakiss, Styles P & Sheek Louch
By JR on 2:56 PM

Hip Hop has it's share of great sample moments from obscure Funk 45s, and "Popcorn Push Push" by Ernest Van Treose is no exception. One of the things that gets me most times in hearing these rare 45s is the interesting breakdowns within the songs, I have to imagine what the musicians were thinking to create such a unique and defined style. The other reward is hearing how Hip Hop can transform the funky drumming, fatback bass an ad-libs of a vocalist from a 45 like this into an underground street smash.
Despite the short track time, I always thought "Put Some Money On It" was a hot posse cut which lent a helping hand in reviving the spirit of street lyricism for my hometown of New York City in 2011. Even though it's short, to me it has a certain amount of rewind factor above many songs I've heard of recent. The style of this song is raw, un-cut spitting straight from the streets, reminiscent of Wu-Tang's knack for gathering a bunch of MCs to deliver rhymes over a fast-paced Soul loop, or the style of Marley Marl/Kane early collaborations.

This installment of Peter Rosenberg's studio audience interview series "Noisemakers" brings an anticipated interview by two artists who have just recently began reconciliation after a very public falling out. Phonte and 9th Wonder took the stage at 92Y Tribecca in New York City, which marked the duo’s first time sharing a stage together in years. Little Brother fans were treated to rare, never before told stories and anecdotes about Little Brother’s origins as a group, their personal careers and more.
At this Noisemakers event a live house band known as Dujeous paired with Illmind who triggered live samples and combined with the live band to perform tracks from Little Brother’s and 9th Wonder’s catalog. Check for performances from MCs Donwill, Skyzoo, Torae, Mickey Factz, Act Proof and Mojo for a freestyle cipher over Jay-Z’s Threat beat. This exclusive, complete 2.5 hour recording of the evening is presented by itsallthewaylive.net
Each performance and interview of this download package is separated for your convenience and labeled as an individual mp3. I hope you enjoy this.

In the history of Hip Hop, I haven't witnessed a higher level of intrigue about a single piece of equipment than the SP1200. This book should satisfy the curious or those who like to reminisce on the undeniable amount of classics produced by the revolutionary drum machine by E-MU Systems. Thanks to the DXA Crew for the heads up on this new book.
Originally titled "More Colors", this DJ Spinna remix is now available as a 12" vinyl b-side to the Black Milk-produced "Deep". I like the whole vibe of this song, the beat it designed to keep your head moving while elZHi comes though to lyrically kill it with deep meaning and metaphors as always. Definitely a collector's item.

Since I got the unfortunate news about Mark's passing in March I've had his music resonating in my mind more than usual, as I'm sure everyone else does who is impacted by the funky, unique style of bass playing he contributed towards an number of feel-good jams during the 70's and 80's. I bring this mix by EJ Flavors for remembrance, inspiration and good listening.
I identify Mark's work with the joyful party vibe of 80's R&B in large way due to his unmistakable style on the bass and collaborations with other musicians who complimented his sound very well such as Odyssey and Slave. My first time hearing Mark Adams and Slave was most likely De La Soul's "Keepin' The Faith" which samples Slave's "Just A Touch", one of the funkiest bass lines I've ever heard.
Enjoy this mix, EJ Flavors has pulled the best of Mark Adams for your listening enjoyment.
Words about Slave bassist Mark Adams and tracklisting from EJ Flavors:
Mark “Hansolo” Adams, the bassist of Slave, and quite possibly the funkiest bass player of all time, has transitioned. He is gone, but will never be forgotten.

02 – Spice Of Life
03 – Party Lites
04 – Wait For Me
05 – Inside Out – Odyssey

07 – Just A Touch Of Love
08 – Dreamin’

10 – Steal Your Heart
Damn the sound of that SP-12 drum machine is thick! The music of DXA never hesitates to inspire me with their revivalist style of feel-good 90's Hip Hop nostalgia combined with skilled lyrics and songwriting that can compete with the best of today's artists. DXA are artists who are an inspiration to the undying love of Hip Hop that remains within it's participants who live the culture daily, they present an original musical identity and pay a strong tribute to it's most classic elements.
If you're a New Yorker or if you lived through the 90's, you should be able to feel the vibe and sound DXA bring in this video especially but also appreciate it as good Hip Hop music in general. Enjoy!
Truth and Soul Records continues their stellar track record of releasing revival Soul music with the instrumental version of Lee Fields critically acclaimed album, "My World
About the album from Truth and Soul Records:
"All the instrumentals from Lee Fields critically acclaimed album, "My World".
Lee Fields is a bona-fide, 100%, unadulterated, pure, gut-bucket soul singer. While the crate-digging funk and soul community bestowed "legendary" status upon him due to his undeniably solid series of rare 7" singles (and one LP) recorded and released on his own independent labels in the 70s, he's never been one to sit in a dusty corner. New York label/production team Truth & Soul, are ready to bring him to light with a brand new album of beat-heavy, deep soul ballads that will show soul-revivalists the world over what real soul is.
When Truth & Soul rose from Soul Fire's ashes in 2004, the first mission of label owners/producers Jeff Silverman and Leon Michels, was to record a sweet soul record that would be modeled after the near perfect formula that bands like The Moments, The Delfonics, and The Stylistics had created. But with a decidedly modern bend.
Four years later and Lee Fields & The Expressions have successfully created a unique and personal sound that can hold court with the bands they set out to emulate. However, what they’ve created in the process goes beyond just a carbon copy of a sweet soul music from the 60's and early 70's. The formula has remained the same but the style has been adapted for the ears of youngsters whose experiences with soul began with Amy, not Al, Otis and Marvin. Thirty years of retrospection has colored this cross-generational melding of the minds. It sounds odd on paper, but the results are classic: hip hop-reared record collectors come full circle to produce an album of beautiful soul music with one of the progenitors who made it all possible."
Graphic Design by Logan Walters
As a visual artist and Jazz lover I really appreciate graphic designer Logan Walters taking the opportunity to conceptualize this design project. The cover design of Blue Note Jazz releases have an undeniable feel and are visually unique within the history of music, so much that when digging in the crates an album by their label is hard to mistake from another.
To merge one of the greatest Jazz labels album packaging design with the modern street imagery of The Wu-Tang Clan is a very interesting visual combination, it is also testament of Hip Hop's ability to evoke strong cultural and musical influences of one era upon another.

This isn't the average tour footage you're used to seeing online nowadays, the trio of Marco, Torae and Ruste are a strong musical entity known for providing high-energy performance in the form of Hip Hop. To the Euro heads who were fortunate to see these guys perform live, I know you got you're money's worth, I saw them perform at one of the last performances of Fat Beats NYC store and it was off the hook!
I'm always happy to hear when a song comes on by one of these guys, they continue to show a lot of potential in shaping the future of underground New York Hip Hop.
This is a tight track conceptually with music that pushes the bounds of intense cinematic listening with a strong head nod factor. "Destiny" features aggressive tag team lyricism of Moke & Tone against the dark sounds of Illmind. This is the follow-up single to Moke & Tone's forthcoming lp, 'Shot Heard Round The World' from Diamond Music Group.
AWAR relieves the weight of his soul on "Soul Caliber" using the art of storytelling to craft deep visions of his struggle to escape from a destructive path. His writing is intriguing and thoughtful like a diary with a range of depth that begs for repeated listens to gain insight into his emotional vision.
The visuals for "Soul Caliber" video are very well done, carrying you from each dark event and mood of the song in a creative way. I'm becoming more and more impressed by the presentation skills I see from emerging independent artists such as AWAR who are serious about their craft. Visit AWAR for more information about the 3 projects he will be releasing this year.

I went into this mix by MoSS (Ghostface, Big Shug, Joell Ortiz, Termanology, Red Cafe, Skyzoo) not really knowing what to expect, but upon listening I was happy to discover the psych sound of Indonesia carries the same type of organic, experimental funk vibe as obscure psych Rock music of America. Each song is filled with funky bass lines, breaks and grooves with an emphasis on outstanding guitar sounds. This is an interesting look into the inter-continental effect of music between world cultures, up until now I would've never thought such funky sounds could come from a region of Southeast Asia!
MoSS's mix contains selections from Now-Again Records CD compilation "Those Shocking, Shaking Days: Indonesian Hard, Psychedelic, Progressive Rock And Funk 1970-1978"
