Hear Talent From Vancouver's 1st Rap Competition, 1990's DJ Sound War

The CiTR Archives takes you back to Vancouver’s “first full-fledged rap and dance music competition” CiTR’s own DJ Sound War Chapter One!
A roster of over 75 MCs from the Pacific Northwest drew crowds of nearly a thousand to UBC’s SUB Ballroom on the 7th and 8th of September, 1990. With categories for DJs, MCs, dancers and crews (group performances), the event was judged by a panel of local luminaries, including CiTR personas David “Love” Jones, Earl the Pearl and Don Chow.
The headliners for the event were EQ, the Vancouver-based duo featuring rappers The Incredible Ease (Edwin Kohn) and Quaze (Stanley Harris Jr.). They were one of the first local acts to get attention outside of BC, with tours through the US and videos making it into the MuchMusic rotation.
Now the CiTR Audiotapes collection from UBC Library Open Collections brings you the straight, unedited live experience (including no shortage of technical difficulties) of Vancouver’s first official rap battle. The reels don’t span the whole of the event, but you can hear sets from EQ, Killa D and DJ Force, Ecpea and the Four Thieves, Wizards of Rap, Craig Crush, Flipside Posse, Terror T and the Beat Assassinator and Prince B.
Like A Tribe Called Quest and Slum Village who have found new identity in Hip Hop by experimenting with dreamy moods and atmosphere, The UK's Cosa Nostra Records keep it thumping in a pleasant way as their jazzy melodies which blend samples, beautiful vocals and touches of instrumentation blend with their smooth approach upon the mic.
For a nice escape from much of the common aggression felt in Hip Hop, turn on "2nd Exit" and feel the vibe of this progressive label who keep your head nodding with their serene look at beats, rhymes and life.
"William Mickey Stevenson was Motown's 1st A&R man, his book traces those early days and details his relationship with some of the most popular artists of our time like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Detroit Spinners, Velvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas and many more plus the initial connection with BERRY GORDY.
Enjoy the hits, misses and collectors items as Hitsville USA is revisited by one of the key figures in the Sound of Young America."
Interview with Kev Roberts of GOLDSOUL Radio plus a medley of Motown's all-time classics.
A powerful and inspiring journey of Jazz Soul sets the tone for an outcry against violence and discrimination as the Detroit-based Kris Johnson Group use their soothing sound of music to focus upon societies ills in a positive light.

With the sweet voice of Maiya Sykes who harmonizes Biggie's timeless verses with beauty to the upbeat rhythm of Jazz, a Hip Hop classic which paints a picture of an urban struggle becomes lovely on the Postmodern Jukebox cover of "Juicy".
"The Fruit Band's fleeting existence was only recently revealed by the discovery of a few unsold copies of their sole 1978 single,Say It, which quickly became a cult showpiece for savvy DJs and collectors. Athens of the North has since reached out to Cypress Studios of Jacksonville, Florida and discovered a complete album of the group's stylish, dancefloor-smashing funk and deep disco on tape, unreleased for over 30 years. Vinyl is presented in a Handmade cardboard Tip-On Sleeve as would have been used at the time as only the best will do."

Enjoy a mix of comedy, history and cool facts as the one and only trio of Stretch, Bob & Lord Sear reunite in 2016 to share their memories of The Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito show with two great fans of the show, Sam & Cathy. While on their promo tour for "Radio That Changed Lives" the movie, the three Hip Hop radio legends seem more appreciative then ever about their legacy as they recall golden moments of Hip Hop from an underground radio show which grew to influence media, society and music worldwide.

"Stretch mixes some old and new joints on here, and does some interesting blends. Featured guests include Kazo from Zhigge along with Fruitkwan from Stesasonic. Tape 2 has Timbo King & Spark 950, who later became Royal Fam. Late in the show, Bobbito pulls out 4 demos for a 'demo battle.' The tape runs out before the callers vote on a winner, but there's damn near the full 4 hour show on this one. Peace to the philaflav heads for taking the time to make out the track list. "
"Here's a remix that 2/3's of the Legendary "Basement Khemist" crew laced me with for my "Ultra Proteus" project back in 2003. I watched Joc Max make the beat live on the SP 1200 during the session. It honestly took him no time at all. Once the beat was cooked, mixed and ready to rock, I knew i needed the homie Taha to complete the vision. Thanx to my ace Johnny Quest for making this recording session possible. Once i do a track with J. Lee my recording circle will be complete!"

Bernard Purdie's "Soul Drums", Now Expanded With Bonus Tracks
By JR on 9:04 PM
Filed Under: Album Streams , Bernard Purdie , Drummers , Soul Music , Unreleased Material
Review by Dusty Groove:
"Massive work from one of the funkiest drummers of all time – the legendary Bernard Pretty Purdie, stepping out here in a batch of instrumentals that may well be his greatest album ever! Bernard's drums are right up front in the mix – leading off all tunes with a full, funky, echoey sort of approach that's unlike anything else we can think of – and certainly different from any other late 60s albums of this type! The production is totally great – and has a way of pulling out some of the weirdest aspects of the music – which itself features guitar from Billy Butler and Eric Gale, bass from Bob Bushnell, tenor and flute from Seldon Powell, and organ and piano from Richard Tee – who also handled all the arrangements on the set!
The centerpiece is the hit single "Funky Donkey", but just about every track's a groover in its own way – and titles include "Soul Drums", "Bill's Groove", "Jimmy's Back", "Testifyin", "Modern Jive", "Blow Your Lid", "Bee N Tee", and "Soul Bossa Nova". This new edition includes 8 bonus tracks, with a couple rare 45 tracks and more that have never been released – all soulful & funk – well paired with the Soul Drums album! Bonus tracks are in stereo, and include "Alexander's Rag Time Band", "Genuine John", "Soul Clappin", "If You Never Cried", "Stop" and "Time Is Tight". Also comes with a nice booklet with new liner notes, and choice quotes from Purdie's peers and those he influenced, from Galt MacDermot to Large Professor."

"Press ‘play’ and the soulful notes of Basil ‘Mannenberg’ Coetzee’s saxophone tell you two things. First, Night Express is great music. But, second, the sound doesn’t fit neatly into any of the mid-70s South African musical genre boxes. This was an era when Abdullah Ibrahim’s music spoke to popular audiences as well as jazz fundis, with the bump jive mood of Mannenberg as representative as the more abstract piano explorations of Underground in Africa. It was also the heyday of Soweto Soul, when groups such as Jacob ‘Mpharanyana’ Radebe’s Cannibals melded hoarse lead vocals, sweet female backing choruses and Ray Phiri’s fiery guitar into South Africa’s answer to the Stax sound. "
Masta Ace digs deep within to draw out life experience and wisdom as he represents the heart of the city on "The Falling Season". "Mao Otayeck is the first French speaking African artist to be discovered and sponsored by Stevie Wonder. The extraordinary collaboration at Wonderland Studios in Los Angeles between a Motown legend and his new ‘protégé’, resulted in his first solo album “RENEWAL”. Stevie Wonder composed the opening track “Wait”, then featured on the rock track “Carry On” playing the harmonica. Since his remarkable performance in Paris-Bercy, during Stevie Wonder’s concert on September 28, 2008, Mao has been in Los Angeles where he is preparing a live tour that will thrill and delight his growing list of fans." https://www.reverbnation.com/maootayeck
""Illadelph Elohim" is boosted by lyrical turns from Rucker Pawk and Last Emperor while DJ Devastate scratches across the hook; Chuck Rukkuz goes for the throat on the blunted "In The Green"; and "Changing Scenery" closes out the album on a high note. Maylay, of course, gets ample credit on the closer, as he kicks fiery and personal bars. But it's the inclusion of his entire Muddy Fatique crew that makes it truly special. Also, given his love for his new stomping grounds in Denmark, it's only fitting that he ends his Renaissance joined by his international teammates." - Below System Records

"Austin Boogie Crew Records return with a fourth release, turning to San Francisco's foremost exponents of modern funk, Starship Connection. Starship members B.Bravo & Teeko have been leading the scene for years and the Intergalactic Funkateers arrive on Austin Boogie Crew brandishing a deadly modern funk cover of Zapp classic "Heartbreaker."
Recorded and released digitally last year to pay homage to talkbox don Roger Troutman on the 16th anniversary of his passing, the cut now makes the overdue transfer to 45 and sounds all the better for it. Driven by talkbox harmonies, cracking drums, thumping bass, and slick halftime break downs, Starship puts their signature twist on a classic. Complementing this, the Starship Connection lay a sweet and soulful exclusive on the flip in the shape of "Do It For U.""

"And now there is Goodbye World, named for a song that Gean first cut over fifty years ago with the Southernaires and performed live with the Relatives in the 70s and at their first reunion show. The success of the Relatives has had far more to do with random occurrences and felicitous discoveries than with a deliberate career trajectory. But there's something about Goodbye World that makes you think that this album had the hand of destiny resting upon it.
Not only did Gean feel the call to get back to life and work from his comatose state, but the album also marks the return of Gypsy, the group's original guitarist. Gypsy had left the group in ’72 or ’73, and didn't rejoin them until a hometown street fair gig in late 2013. His Eddie Hazel-meets-Ernie Isley guitar heroics and bass-to-falsetto vocal range are a key contributor to the album's sound (that’s Gypsy singing both lead and back-up on “No Man Is An Island”), and he arranged the vocals and rhythm section on half of the record’s tracks." - Ubiquity Records
