Preserving The Culture by the legendary Rhyme Inspector Percee P and A-FS is a show which presents the views of Hip Hop who lived and preserve the traditions of the culture, focusing on the era of park jams in The Bronx up until the present generation. The hosts and their esteemed guests provide a wealth of teachings, experience and enlightenment to the listener which cuts through the false illusions of corporate media image of Hip Hop.
I could listen to these shows repeatedly for the depth and life experiences given by pioneer artists such as King Sun and DJ Mark Luv of The Zulu Nation. One show in particular where Percee P shares his memories of growing up in Patterson projects opened my mind up to the true essence of Hip Hop which can be preserved by those who truly care about the culture. Preserving The Culture is a refreshing listen, in this current era where media is moving faster than ever this podcast can let you take a break from the fast pace and reflect on the true gifts of Hip Hop history.
Here is Episode 1 featuring Percee P, he speaks on the battle he had in the Bronx with Lord Finesse in addition to his career and life retrospective:

I like the vibe of this song, Revolution as been making a steady climb from renown DJ to notable producer for a few years now and this first single from his Malcolm & Martin project sounds like beginning of a promising Hip Hop project. "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" set to drop Feb. 1st on Soulspazm Records by the dynamic duo of Malcolm & Martin.
One of the funkiest band's I've heard. I'm forever grateful to for their contributions which span 70's Funk music to contemporary, classic Hip Hop productions. Ric, Lou, and Carlos Wilson of Mandrill speak with Midnight Solstice Radio in a 2009 interview about the band's roots, the significance of the Mandrill animal, their philosophy as musicians and feelings about being sampled by Hip Hop artists.
Set List:
Mandrill: Peace and Love (Polydor)
- Mandrill: Symphonic Revolution (Polydor)
- Mandrill: Children of the Sun (Polydor)
- Mandrill: Lord of the Golden Baboon (Polydor)
- Mandrill: Fencewalk (Polydor)
- Mandrill: Hagalo (Polydor)
- Mandrill: Fat City Strut (Polydor)
- Mandrill: Folks on the Hill (Polydor)
- Mandrill: Solid (United Artists)
- Mandrill: We gotta get it right this time (Wilson Bros. Records)
- Mandrill: Who got the Funk (Wilson Bros. Records)
A mix of the old and new, some are slept-on while others are widely recognized songs, that's how I usually like to listen to my music. Hopefully you do to and will enjoy this mixtape by DJ Hamza 21 of Domeshots & Fat Laces. It looks like a nice comparison between one generation of producers to another, so the title of the mixtape is fitting.

Savant aka Stanstro spits nothing but The Truth in this song from his sophomore release, the Fess Grandiose produced "Crash". Listen as he blesses the mic with a conscious mentality and determination to bring a refreshing element of poetry for your mind and soul. "The Truth" is a sample which represents the depth you can find in his music catalog, prepare for an MC who combines quality production, social commentary and advanced lyricism into songs.
Bio:
Tucson, AZ resident, by way of El Paso, TX and Chicago, IL, Gregory "Savant" Daggett has always possessed a passion for music and literary arts. Involved in general music since age 7, and a trumpet player since age 10, he wasn't officially exposed to hip hop until age 12. Although no particular emcee caught his ear right away, he was intrigued with the entire concept of an individual or a group of people speaking over instrumentation in an intensely rhythmic lyrical form, oftentimes telling semi-autobiographic tales relating to a fictionalized counterpart. He became inspired to write and partake of the art of emceeing after hearing the 1999 classic "Black on Both Sides" by Dante Smith and honed his emceeing chops at the lunch room ciphers of Chicago high schools Whitney M. Young Magnet and George Washington Carver. He has since dedicated every verse, every bar and every word to achieving the ever elusive sense of balance in this hallowed art form.

Had to give this unreleased Jaylib track some attention, this short leftover from their Champion Sound sessions highlights the knack of each producer to take a classic Hip Hop breakbeat and transform it into something new as their own definition of "funky". When you hear of music from the duo of Jay Dee & Madlib, you should expect something creative and original which represents classic elements of Hip Hop.
"Louder (Blast Your Radio Theme)" is also featured on Madlib Medicine Show #11: Low Budget High Fi Music, now available from Stones Throw Records.
"A 28-track hip-hop album of exclusive Madlib collabos w/ A.G., Guilty Simpson, MED, Oh No, Strong Arm Steady and others. Karriem Riggins pops in for a Supreme Team session, Madlib & Oh No debut The Professionals, and we hear a Jaylib-era track from their never-realized second album. Low Budget High Fi also contains several Loop Digga instrumentals and of course interludes, outerludes and probably quaaludes."
Elzhi and Phat Kat appear focused and determined as they speak on a variety of upcoming projects, expanding their sound by working with international producers and embracing new, upcoming talent from Detroit such as Danny Brown. Elzhi sounds like he's finally prepared to release "Elmatic" to us after a 2 year wait. I'm really glad to hear both MCs express their opinions on the current state of mainstream Hip Hop in a straightforward, unbiased way by focusing on both positives and negatives.
Prepare for the duo album by Phat Kat and Elzhi called "Cold Steel", Phat Kat's solo album "The Katacombs" and Elzhi's "Elmatic.

With standout work on the drums and creative sample arrangements that tap into the dark side of orchestral music, Nuttkase brings a vibe of tension and raw sound to match the best of today's underground lyricists on his remix compilation "Dope Remixes Vol. 1". I love Soul tunes like this which inspire the feeling of escapism and having a good time, especially those where you can hear the voices of random people in the background like a party adding onto the party vibe of the song. Many Soul and Jazz artists of the 70's accomplished this vibe in their own way, but "(Do) What Ever Turns You On" really personifies the style of party atmosphere sounds produced on deep Soul records of the 60's and 70's.
Hearing the lead singer go buckwild near the end of the song is another trademark element of this genre of Soul that is very entertaining, and evidence of how good a time the recording process of artists from this era usually had.
If this is what I can expect from the future of Jazz, then I am excited. On "Post Suite" by Floating Points Ensemble, composer Sam Shepherd provides an epic sound of Jazz, one which is very spiritual and soulful. The instrumentation of "Post Suite" is made up of a full string section, flute, trumpet, saxophone, percussion, guitar and keys, a composition of sound which plays beautifully against Fatima's soothing vocals.
This track along with it's b-side "Almost In Profile" was recorded and mixed at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, initially for the Ninja Tune XX box set which marked the label’s 20th anniversary.

IllVibe Collective - Authentic Raw ft. Supastition & Reef The Lost Cauze
By JR on 8:06 AM
Filed Under: IllVibe Collective, Reef The Lost Cauze, Soulspazm Records, Supastition
Had to post this after hearing it on one of my favorite college mix shows, the combination of Philly's most respected DJ crew, Reef The Lost Cauze and Supastition sounds great.
From IllVibe Collective's blog:
"Behold. The first single from our debut production LP coming via Soulspazm Records in early 2011. The forthcoming Illvibe Collective album is titled All Together now and is a mixed bag of hip hop, soul, and electronic flavors. There are appearances on the album from Bahamadia, Invincible, Conya Doss, Aaron Livingston, Rich Medina, our label mate, Hezekiah and much more. We have been working on All Together now for about 2 years and it's finally done and ready for your ears. For now, here is the first single, Authentic Raw featuring Supastition and Reef The Lost Cauze. The feedback has been overwhelming so far and a bunch of DJs around the globe have already added the joint to their playlists thanks to Foundation Media. We hope you all enjoy what's to come."
Raekwon gives us some inside details on his upcoming album, the guest features and production sounds exciting! The name of the new album is Shaolin VS Wu-Tang and hits stores March 8th.
Listen to an interview with Raekwon, former Loud records A&R's Scott Free and Matt Life on The Frozen Files Show, East Village Radio New York. They reminisce on the early days of Wu Tang on Loud, also discuss "Shaolin vs. Wu Tang" and the traditions of Hip Hop.
Jazz legend and vibraphonist extrodinaire Roy Ayers sits down at SOB's nightclub for a short conversation about his career and musical influence with an emerging talent of contemporary Jazz, pianist Robert Glasper. I'm excited to hear Roy Ayers influence of Jazz being passed down from one generation to the next.
This is amazing look back into one of the greatest eras of Hip Hop, I never thought I'd find a college radio station that held onto their past episodes this far back in time. Fortunately for us, we have someone who really appreciates The Golden Era, and has captured these classic performances over time! Check out the sounds of Ultramagnetic rhyming live over DJ Moe Love cutting doubles of classic breaks such as Funky Drummer and a live performance of "Ease Back", these recordings contain moments of late-80's Hip Hop I really miss.
Check out the feature with Afrika Bambaataa here, along with a collection of more WNYU episodes dating back to 1981: http://soundcloud.com/wnyu-classic-archives/afrika-bambaataa-1986-nas-w-joel
This was a great find, and many thanks to SoulCulture.co.uk for the audio! I'm always eager to hear the extra work from the stash of Aftermath-affiliated producers and alot the production which has been made for NaS over the years is intriguing. Denaun's sounds on this instrumental project are soulful with a foundation of strong drums and rhythm, listening to the different moods provokes some thought of what gems NaS might have written to each track.
"Beautiful Thang" feat. Phonte of Little Brother/Foreign Exchange
"What Can I"
I haven't heard a Hip Hop song which paints the image of success quite like this, "Schemin" brings an uplifting feeling of music and life aspirations from beginning to end. With sweeping brass horn sections and a calming piano melody, Dawaun composes a vivid and inspiring view of coming from nothing to something in life. The words of this song are that of a person who has come along way to share his experience with those still on their way to the top, Dawaun takes a moment to reminisce on his humble beginnings while enjoying current success.
Dawaun Parker is gearing up for the release of his EP tentatively titled, “The Decision”, due early 2011. Parker stepped from behind the beats onto the microphone for his very own song, “Lost” – the first offering from his EP, co-produced by Dr. Dre as the official introduction of Dawaun Parker.

From Massachusetts to Atlanta's Dirty South, producer/MC Arablak holds it down with raw energy in the form of competitive Hip Hop, his songs translate skills and determination attained from the corner, stage and cypher circuit. "Fresh Heir - Chapter 1: The Inheritance" introduces you to Arablak's purpose as an MC, who spits with a level of confidence and an admirable dedication to the art of Hip Hop.
Bio:
Arablak is a firm believer in the ideal that music should sound good before anything else is considered. Also a co-founder of Social Light Sounds, ‘Bliggs’ is determined to stamp the timeline of musical history with his stylish contribution.
Rhyming since the 1992, recording since 1998, and producing since 2002, Arablak has become a seriously high caliber artist. Formerly known as ‘Alchemist’ among the hip-hop community of central Massachusetts, his clever rhyme patterns, dynamic presence and stylish delivery gained him acclaimed status as one of the area’s finest.
Being a key member of various local Massachusetts crews, experience has taught him that standing out is the primary ingredient when leaving an impression geared towards one goal: making great hip-hop music for the masses to enjoy.
Listen to more of Arablak's work at www.reverbnation.com/arablak and soundcloud.com/arablak.
"The Turnaround: A Long Awaited Drama" the one and only album by Real Live, re-defined my view of the streets through deep images of hustling, violence and survival from the mind of Larry-O and advanced production of K-Def, the duo set various moods and described each song with cinematic detail. It is good to finally hear from Larry-O again since his debut in 1996, he previews two new songs with his manager Special K of The Awesome Two at his side on The Halftime Show with DJ Eclipse. If you are a Real Live fan, I'm sure you'll be impressed with Larry-O's latest work, check for his interview around the 35:00 mark.
Croatian producer Koolade teams up with The 'Datfather and The Best Producer On The Mic for a soulful treat. "The Makings" uses the same sample as "The Joy" by Pete Rock, Kanye and Jay-Z, but with a different feel and theme in the writing which makes it an original song in itself. Thanks to Blackout Hip Hop for the audio.
I'm feeling the smooth, jazz-funk-fusion vibe of this beat by Boonie Mayfield. Stay tuned for more of this guys work, he seems to have a well polished sound, talent and new ideas.
Bio:
"Boonie Mayfield, aka Boon Doc, is a Denver-based hip-hop and soul producer (his stage surname is a nod to Curtis Mayfield, a pioneer of funk and political consciousness). An internationally known producer, Boonie credits YouTube as part of his present day success. His highly esteemed YouTube videos have over 4.1 million views including one of his MPC videos at over 800,000 views alone. His homemade videos actually began early in his career. To prove that some of his beats were stolen off of the internet by another producer, Boonie purchased a cheap video camera, recorded himself playing the beats, and posted the video as proof that the beats were indeed his. This eventually led to him making more homemade videos show casing his ridiculous MPC skills and, now a days, sharing his beat-making process."

Introducing DXA's Progression Instrumentals, a looper's delight reminiscent of the feel-good vibe early 90's jazz-based Hip Hop production brings to the ear. Composed of filtered bass lines, thick drum breaks and layered jazz samples all in lo-fi analog warmth, Progression Instrumentals are an escape of musical nostalgia through creative compositions provided by the DXA crew.
This player from soundcloud is a preview to their instrumental project, now available here at iTunes.
Be sure to also check out DXA vs. The Rhythmonster EP - Inspiration From The "Golden Age" if you haven't already, the production carries a similar vibe as this instrumental project.
This is one of those tight songs I had to pick from an album that is already out and throw it into regular rotation. It's interesting to hear how these two artists from different regions modified their musical styles to mold it into one track which is neither identifiable as traditional South sound or East Coast boom bap.
The 1990's production catalog of Buckwild most likely reads as a menu of irresistible treats for the listener who like me is addicted to hearing the fundamental aspects of classic Hip Hop sound and often reminisce upon a unique time of creative expression by lyricists. DJ Shaun D. aka Wicked takes you into the crates with “Buckwild Produced Pt.1” mixed Live at The Wicked Takeover on 90.1 KZSU Stanford, December 21, 2010. Before discovering this mix, I have already had a number of these songs in regular rotation along with newer stuff, but a good DJ like Shaun D helps to tap into a good music discography like Bucks that is timeless by bringing it back to light on radio.

DJ Houseshoes Presents - Free Your Funk Mix (Hip Hop From Detroit)
By JR on 4:01 PM
Filed Under: Black Milk, Hip Hop - Detroit, Houseshoes, Jay Dee, Slum Village
DJ Houseshoes, one of the leading pieces of a growing musical legacy to emerge from Detroit's Hip Hop scene presents a mix of his productions. The Free Your Funk mix demonstrates the continuation of ruff and rugged, drum heavy, sample-laced sound for a new standard of Hip Hop expression founded by Detroit.
from www.goodmusiconly.com -
"The homie House Shoes well known for his involvement in the development of the Detroit Hip Hop scene (especially J Dilla, Slum Village, Phat Kat, Guilty Simpson…) came twice to Paris, France for the “Thank You Jay Dee” tribute party by Free Your Funk. He did this special mix for the promotion of the party. All tracks produced by House Shoes including unreleased ones. The last track is a one minute extract from a never-released smashing joint by the great late J Dilla also produced by House Shoes."
Audio: Oddisee Recalls His Best Work Of 2010 On "A Year In"

I've enjoyed the soulful, inventive productions of Oddisee since around 2006 after discovering his diverse discography with a variety of breakthrough artists such as Little Brother and his group Diamond District. Oddisee is one producer who has made my search for music in the new digital age something to look forward to, by leaving his creative imprint of inventive sample-based production on different styles of Hip Hop, Soul and Instrumental music. This collection called "A Year In" showcases Oddisee's growth as a producer/MC who continues to collaborate with a range of up and coming talent, from traditional Hip Hop, Southern bounce or contemporary Soul.
Review from the LA Times Music Blog"
"Oddisee spent 2010 trying to live up to his name, collaborating with a range of characters, including Brighton, England's trip-hop soulstress Andreya Triana, jazzy New York favorite Homeboy Sandman and the top tier -- X.O., Kingpin Slim, yU -- of his Washington, D.C., hometown. His soulful wanderings lamped in Los Angleles long enough to produce ideal complements to the laid-back palm-tree flows of TiRon, Blu and Trek Life. Available for free at his Bandcamp site, the compilation traces the arc of one of the most gifted and unsung producers in rap."

On Project A.T.O.M : Merkabah, Chariot Of Ascension, DProsper brings a flurry of images and deep thought to the microphone, providing an awakening into current social concerns and the historical relevance of African American people. In 2010, D carries the tradition of combining education and social awareness with talent that highlights a high level of technical ability and intellectual value rarely seen in MCs of his time. I'm sure that "Merkabah, Chariot Of Ascension" is a taste of what will be a very substantial and influential Hip Hop project to come from D. Prosper aka Mastermind.
