Listen as 3 MCs visualize the affects of a war-torn community known as inner-city America, the re-definition and future of ghetto narration through the eyes of a black man.
The Rawth EP is an interesting combination of a Hip Hop duo that is worth the listen. On the first listen, Nottz and Asher may seem like artists of two different worlds, their style of delivery and energy on the mic are opposite but they both share a common skill for expression of life through Hip Hop which is the binding element of their songs. "Don'tcha Wanna Be (My Neighbor)" is easily one of my favorite songs of 2010 and a good example of their unique synergy. Take a listen to the EP and see what you think of this new duo.
There have been examples of ambitious independent moves in Hip Hop history, but none are as memorable to me as Wu Tang Clan's industry breakthrough. The circulation of their self-distributed debut single and videos "Protect Ya Neck" and "Method Man" took on a life of it's own in 1993, gaining momentum with time as true Hip Hop fans took notice of the crew's potential despite their limited resources. I always look at this part of their career as a very inspirational one, it shows you how to use whatever resources you have at your disposal to build upon a legacy of your own.
Almost the whole crew is here, explaining how they carved their own path to break into the industry. They weren't quite at their peak of success yet at this point, but seem proud to have made it to a level where they are now calling their own shots, which is good. The Clan are good at leaving valuable life lessons based on trail and error, good faith and experience.
I sure wouldn't have wanted to be the record exec who failed to sign these guys in their early career..
Listen to Large Professor play a set of obscure songs by the late, great James Brown, plus other Soul and Hip Hop artists who have the Godfather's influence in their music.
The raw format of the Forty Deuce radio show takes me back to the feeling and musical nostalgia of listening to stations like WBAI and WKCR honestly, it's become harder to find a group of DJs in New York who play breaks, samples and Golden Era Hip Hop all in one set. Enjoy!

One of the notable female vocal talents to emerge from the Little Brother/Foreign Exchange camp has blessed us with an EP, just in time for the holidays. "Nostalgic Nights"is the follow up to her first extended play release "Doug & Patty" and is available as a free download! I'm excited for this project after hearing her work on a number of guest spot features as a new female vocalist who lends a touch of soul to the climate of Hip Hop.
The "Nostalgic Nights" EP features production from Brooklyn producer Jay Sentine, France's Swan Dito, San Diego's Abjo and Doug & Patty and M1 Platoon producer, Vaughn Garcia.
Bio:
The voice on the Little Brothertrack that had all wondering "Where do all the lonely people go when the party's over" has taken her career into her own hands and been buzzing every since. Whirling up a musical storm with songwriting skills and electrifying beats, Carlitta Durand isn't your usual soul contender. Mixing up the tones of funk, jazz, soul and hip-hop, Carlitta's unique recognizable voice breaks any boundaries of pure music greatness.
Carlitta was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota into a multi-racial family that molded her for diversity and change. With headphones placed on her mother's belly while impregnated,Carlitta list influences amongst greats such as Chaka Khan, Marvin Gaye, SWV, The Gap Band, A Tribe Called Quest and especially Prince. Taking a move to North Carolina to attend North Carolina Central University, Carlitta entered the NC hip-hop world which included Grammy-Award winning producer 9th Wonder and Little Brother group members Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh. Since then Carlitta has been the soulful hook singing sensation on tracks with Buckshot, Little Brother, M1 Platoon, Skyzoo, Tanya Morgan and more. Now Carlitta and her band Fat Snacks continue to make musical vibrations on stage, which they previously toured and opened up for The Foreign Exchange.
Have Yourself A Bold Soul Brother Christmas With A Mix of 1966-1970 Gems

This is dedicated to all those who have taken time to follow the blog and will hopefully continue the journey through 2011 and beyond, it's been a year to remember thanks to your support and inspiration. I hope to continue providing content which is insightful to the mind, spirit and music lover in all of us.
Of all genres of music I am familiar with, something about a soulful Christmas record really stands out among others. In my household I can recall the sound and deep emotion of singers who gave great performances based on the holiday, whether it was a TV special, music played in my house or even a group of Soul singers in the streets of New York. From boldsoulbrother.com, here is a mix of Christmas-theme deep Soul tunes, both common and obscure, from slow ballads to funky uptempo jams, but all good for listening.
The Salem Travelers – Merry Christmas To You (Checker 10050); 1968
The Flirtations – Christmas Time Is Here Again (Deram 85036); 1968
Clarence Carter – Back Door Santa (Atlantic 2576); 1968
Electric Jungle – Funky Funky Christmas (Reissued compilation; In The Christmas Groove); 2009
James Brown – Soulful Christmas (A Soulful Christmas LP; King 1040); 1968
Marvin Gaye – I Want To Come Home For Christmas (Tamla 54229); not issued – taken from 1992 CD reissue of A Motown Christmas
Soul Duo – A Sad Christmas (Shiptown 131132); 1969
Kim Weston – Wish You A Merry Christmas (recording date unknown – previously unissued; taken from A Christmas Present From Motown CD, 2009)
The Emotions – Black Christmas (Volt 4053); 1970
Private Charles Bowen & The Gentlemen From Tigerland – Christmas In Vietnam (Rojac 111); 1966
Soul Searchers – Christmas In Viet Nam (Songbird 1187); 1968
The Emotions – What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas (Volt 4104); 1973
Carla Thomas – All I Want For Christmas Is You (Stax 206); 1966
Meditation Singers – Blue Christmas (Checker 10050); 1968
James Brown – Go Power At Christmas Time (James Brown’s Funky Christmas LP; unknown issue date); taken from CD re-issue.
Rest in peace to James Brown.
The sounds of DXA vs. The Rhythmonster EP exemplify the timeless aspect of Hip Hop sound which resonates in your consciousness with depth and meaning. A classic sound rich with gritty SP12-produced sounds and witty rhymes that evokes the fun-loving aspect of Hip Hop.
The four-man crew of DXA (DFACE, CALAMITY CHRIS, DOAM PEACE, and ICEROCKS) hail from the heart of NYC. DXA has perfected the art of projecting deep, meaningful messages of life over gritty, soulful instrumentals. Their rhymes are driven by beats crafted exclusively from none other than the SP drum machines. Each MC expresses themselves with a great sense of freedom and skill, crafting songs to leave you feeling good as Hip Hop should. It's a nostalgic vibe reminiscent of the feeling of a park jam, where happiness rules and skills are the driving force.
If you wondered what it would sound like when a contemporary group expands upon the classic, traditional sounds of the late 80's and early 90's with results that are impressive, look no further than the DXA vs. The Rhythmonster EP. In the back of my mind, I've been waiting to hear something like this for awhile, as I am sure most of us who love the Golden Era have also.
Listen to "Hands Of Time" above, then support by purchasing on vinyl or CD at Discogs. This one is hard to find online.
Bio:
D.X.A. are the cats who make it happen from the tip of the BX to the congested streets of Manhattan. The group began during Dface’s earlier days hitting up graffiti with filthy pieces and hand styles. Thus, the acronym D.X.A was created, standing for such terms as Dirty Xplicit Artists or Droppin Xplicit Artwork. The fateful run-in with Chris during high school led to the beginning of something that was much more than a couple of kids painting on walls. Inspiration from the "golden age" of Hip Hop, as with so many others, had become the culture in which they would find their niche. In the years that followed, the inclusion of Icerocks, a neighborhood homie whose love for digging and knack for chopping allowed the young MCs to finally create their own music, joining one common goal in the process; progress. That being said the crew took its final transformation with the further addition of Doam, Calamity Chris's brother, as the third MC.

This is a nice, high quality filming of Havoc and Noyd performing one of their classics live in Boston, shot in black & white with editing in the style of their video "Burn" from "Infamy" by Jon Wolf & Mike Greenwood. Prepare for the return of Prodigy the H.N.I.C., who comes home in March 2011.
Little Vic is a talented independent lyricist who has shown great potential if you look closely to the underground. He seems to be on a steady climb towards greater recognition, having already worked with DJ Premier, Kool G Rap and now an EP collaborating with the one and only Buckwild of D.I.T.C. Watch this short video of new duo Buckwild and Little Vic as they work on a track called "History Is Written" for their upcoming EP.
Listen to a previous Buckwild/Little Vic collaboration called "The Evil That Men Do" here, a cinematic track which shows Vic's talent for storytelling and impressive wordplay over a chilling Buckwild track.
The dynamic Bronx NY duo 950 Plus team up with veterans A.G. and Fat Joe, for a collaboration that represents the ethnic vibe and Latin heritage of their neighborhood while challenging the art of the traditional posse cut. 950 Plus is here to bring you back to the grit, honesty and drive of Hip Hop from the Boogie Down.
All my residents of the ghetto and members of Hip Hop, rejoice in artists who portray the beauty of this community, helping you to realize and appreciate the most simple things in life through music. InI Mighty Lock Down collaborates with M1 of Dead Prez for "Ghetto Livin'", a dedication to the urban American experience which shows pride and messages of upliftment within the struggle to reggae-influenced melodies.
From my experience growing up in Harlem, NY I've experienced different phases of ghetto life both good and bad, but overall the people in my community who hold their head high and show a genuine love of life are the binding element which sustains our prosperity. Hip Hop is an example of how to make good out of hard times by people who come from the limited resources of the ghetto to create a larger outcome, similar to creating a diamond out of coal.
The ghetto applies pressure and oppression upon it's residents, but like any rough situation in life, we must use the pressure to our advantage to come out on top successful and stronger than before like our legendary Hip Hop artists, entrepreneurs, musicians, activists, everyday residents and heroes of our society.

On Raphael Saadiq’s last album he channeled the “ghosts of The Temptations,” as he says. On his new one, Stone Rollin’, he keeps that retro style, but takes it MUCH further – as DJ Jeremy Sole says, “it’s his “Electric Ladyland.” KCRW and Anthony Valdez were invited into Raphael's Blakeslee Studio for a listening session of the album where footage was captured and great musical memories were experienced. View more pictures and here first-hand description of the visit at http://antvala.wordpress.com/2010/12/17/inspiration-saadiq/

As a long-time fan of The Native Tongues, I highly recommend this retrospective of their 100 greatest songs by Jason Gloss and Thun of the T.R.O.Y. blog. Each part of this series includes cover art, audio and great descriptions about what makes each artist's song eccentric and memorable.
It's been over 20 years since the Native Tongues blessed Hip Hop with their first classic. After revisiting their total output I am glad to say each song remains as enjoyable as the day I first discovered it, thanks to the work of fans such as T.R.O.Y. who help bring the greatness of Hip Hop to light.

Video: Godfather Pt. 3 of Infamous Mobb Speaks On Upcoming Projects
By JR on 9:54 PM
Filed Under: Hip Hop - Queensbridge , Infamous Mobb , Interviews (Video)
There are few artists who can claim a whole style and aura of Hip Hop the way the Mobb has since their signature style of darkness re-defined the streets around "The Infamous" and Hell On Earth" albums. Godfather Pt. 3, one third of the Queensbridge duo Infamous Mobb gives a brief history of his introduction into Hip Hop through the harsh influences of his neighborhood surroundings and the support of Mobb Deep.
I expected to hear Godfather address the breakup of Infamous Mobb when I first viewed this interview, but fortunately there is no news to speak of. Hopefully they have reconciled their differences since Ty Nitty's breakup announcement and can continue adding onto their impressive discography as a group.
The combination of Infamous Mobb, Alchemist, Sid Roams and their affiliates remain a rare gem within the current scene of New York hip hop, a collective artists who produce a musical street cinema which is socially relevant, musically competitive and influential as an authentic voice of the ghetto experience.
Enter the dark, ominous vibe known as the Wu Tang sound with a fresh batch of new beats from producer Cilvaringz. This listening session really puts the dark, cinematic signature sound of Wu Tang into perspective, showing the timelessness and influence of sound founded by RZA is still relevant to influencing others to create raw Hip Hop in the present day. Each beat by Cilvaringz offers a look into future of Wu Tang sound, both for those who have been following the collective of talent since day one and brand new listeners.
Stay tuned for some treats from the Wu Tang family, Cilvaringz confirms he is at work with artists such as Method Man, Killah Priest, Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang and Ghostface on his sequel to Supreme Clientele.
La The Darkman makes it a night to remember in one of the most dangerous rhyme sessions to take place on Stretch & Bobbito's radio show. Mad tension is in the air as one of the most talented Wu-Tang affiliates brings the streets and lyrical swordsmanship to your eardrum. To an ominous soundscape of Hip Hop music, La uses the mic like a weapon and proceeds to "cock it back and smoke a rapper like Phillie". It's La The Darkman, Wu-Tang Clan..

This is a fun interview to hear, just as I expected from the down to earth persona Red usually brings. The female interviewing him, Hannah Rad of New York's East Village Radio sounds alot like the psychiatrist personalities who you hear on the skits of his albums, which is kinda interesting. Redman stops by to promote his latest mixtape "Pancake And Syrup" and his upcoming album, "Reggie" (released Dec. 7). As a Redman fan since his appearance on EPMD's 3rd LP, I get the feeling from this interview he has some treats in store for all of us which are original from his previous work and represent in the form of uncut Hip Hop.
As a representative of the 90's, when having a physical album in your hands was the norm, Red reminds us how much it is important to create an experience of album release date that people will remember beyond just a purchase, through connecting with the fans, promotional groundwork and touring.
The adlibs from the late, great J Dilla add a nice touch to this new song "Heavenly" by John Robinson, who brings a refreshing amount of depth and personality to the current climate of MCing. Additional vocals by ID 4 Windz & Tiffany Paige.
This audio is from the November 25, 2010 Pharoahe Monch and Jean Grae show on The Gold Coast of Australia, performing some of their best songs and a few new exclusives from "W.A.R." and "Cake Or Death", the forthcoming solo albums by Pharoahe Monch and Jean Grae. I feel fortunate to have gained a new appreciation over the years by hearing my favorite artists perform their classics live, especially those who do it with the proficiency, energy and breath control as Pharoahe & Jean Grae. Hopefully you feel the same after listening.
The audio recording of this performance is separated by individual song and into a few folders for your convenience when loading it into iTunes. Enjoy!
I appreciate this footage because it reminds me of what the social environment of Hip Hop used to be in my neighborhood of MCs who lead the community with uplifting music and allowed the youth to showcase their talent, even if it was during their show. To look back on this era of synchronized dancers, high top gumby cuts and looped samples is great, but I really enjoy seeing kids gfrom the neighborhood get on the stage and show their skills. These are inspiring elements of Hip Hop from the late 80's-early 90's where many artists made music which served as escapism from the harsh reality of their neighborhoods instead of glorifying it.
